Dragonstone

It seems that Dragonmont hill on Dragonstone island had volcanic vents. Is there any evidence between these?:-

(1) The Targaryens introduced the name and the dragons.

(2) The island already had the name, because wild dragons bred in the volcanic heat there, either formerly, or still did so when Valyrians started to explore in the area.

Dragonstone looks to have been occupied by Valyria for about 187 years before the Targs showed up.

So it would seem unlikely the Targs are responsible for the name.

With the construction said to have been done with magic, it wouldn't seem to be too far fetched to assume the original Valyrians on Dragonstone also had access to dragons.

The Targs may have had to forcibly take control of Dragonstone and it seems possible the wild dragons could have descended from the original owner's dragons.

Agreed. I find it far more likely that the Valyrians who first claimed the island used their dragons to shape the stone with flame, than that the Targs named it, considering the island was claimed well before the Doom and House Targaryen's subsequent arrival there. Maybe there were wild dragons living there because they liked the heat, but your idea also make sense. It is interesting to think what was going on there before the Targaryens arrived escaping the doom, was there a Valyrian garrison or dragon lord family holding it? I am not sure, but considering Aenar and his family seemed to get there and have no resistance/issue, probably no other dragon lord wanted to be there cause of it's location. Plus, all things considered, since the Targaryens were a minor dragon lord family in the Valyrian Freehold, the other families may have thought it beneath them to sit on Dragonstone. Makes you wonder who the most powerful family was, and what separated them from the rest.
