The government's official advice appears to have been written by people who have never come into contact with children, advising that children as young as 4 and 5 are kept apart as much as possible, given their own playdough and not taking others', not putting things in their mouths etc. Clearly completely impossible, so the unions have made it clear that they will be advising their teachers not to return to work on 1 June without much more concrete assurances from the government rooted in scientific advice.

Too right. I work in a nursery (in Germany) where we've been open basically the whole time for children of key workers, with more kids coming in asthey get notes from their work or their doctor. Even at tiny class sizes you cannot expect kids of 3,4,5 years old not to play with each other when they're in the same room or playground. Even if it was possible to do it, you'd be doing them psychological harm. Suggesting that teachers could manage it with full class sizes would be absolutely ludicrous.

Like those guidelines that went around last week in Canada I think? For how to reopen schools, by having the kids literally sit in the same seat, that they're assigned before they arrive (so no choice of sitting with friends or anything) all day, all week, not allowed a pause even for breaktime. If the cost of reopening is psycholigically torturing children it's not worth it.
