Second Sons

A thought about the "Second Sons"...

Tyrion is Tywin's (possibly Aerys') Second Son.

Jon is Ned's (possibly Rhaegar's) Second Son

Any other "Second Sons" we should think about?

Ned, Bran, The Hound, Stannis, Red Viper, Sam Tarly's brother??

Could there be a possible deeper link to second sons?

First sons rarely live long in A Song of Ice and Fire.

Euron Greyjoy, Kevan Lannister, Robett Glover, Mors Umber, and many others.

Second sons seem to be of one of two molds, either very servile (Ned, Kevan) or very rebellious (Tyrion, Blackfish, Oberyn, Euron)

Little known fact: Over 90% of all family units with at least two male children contain a second son.

Really, in a cast with a four figure number of characters, there should be a vast number of second sons. Unless there's a common denominator that sets them apart from first sons (Robb, Jorah, Sam, Joff, Doran, Tywin, Balon, LF, Rhaegar, Jon Arryn, Jon Con, Jon Snow (yep, he's both a first and a second son), Robert, Sweetrobin, ...), there's no theme yet.

Common characteristics that I do see are mainly that while the first son has his place in the world already made, the second son must search for it to escape his older brother's shadow (or accept to be overshadowed, like Kevan or Vicky). This increases the possibility of them joining orders like the KG (Dayne, Aemon the Dragonknight, Bran's plan), and if they do come into their own, it makes that development all the more impressive. But... that's nothing specific to the series, it's just a logical dose of realism.

I think they're important in general throughout the series.

In GOT Cersei talks about Ned being the second son, raised to take orders rather than giving them. Second sons seem to fit the unlikely hero mold that Martin seems fond of.

I like this idea. First sons have the pressure to make a name for themselves, and often end up getting killed because they dip into the game of thrones. Second sons become more prevalent, because... they're the ones who stay alive most of the time.

Quellon had three wives and nine sons, of which only four survived to adulthood. Euron is 2nd surviving son, but not 2nd

Technically he is the fifth, to be fair though Euron is the second son of Quellon Greyjoy by his second wife of House Sunderly. (Not sure if that accounts for anything though)
