Who told Ned about Syrio?

Good question. I've wondered about this, too. What was Syrio doing in KL in the first place? How did Ned come to interact with him? Was Syrio the first sword of Braavos at the time he taught Arya, or before that? If he was FSoB before he came to KL, maybe he knew Dany and Viserys before they got kicked out from the Sealord's palace.

Before, I think. It always sounds as if he's talking about the past when he mentions his time as First Sword - not distant past, necessarily, but a period that is over, nonetheless. Maybe he was First Sword to a Sealord who died, and it's customary for the next one to appoint his own First Sword.

As for who told Ned... we don't know. Presumably he asked around, and someone who knew Syrio (or knew about him) told him - I don't think there's anything sinister, hidden or complex about that. It could have been anyone, and it doesn't need to be a named character really.

I think Tobho is a pretty likely candidate. For one thing, there seem to be signs that he has a connection to Braavos / the HoB&W..

Then, it's plain that this was something Ned was doing on the QT (and since everyone thought that he really had hired a dancing master) I don't think that he would have asked any one like Varys or LF about it.. likewise ,he wouldn't have asked anyone from the city guard to check it out for him.

He didn't visit Tobho himself until after Syrio had been hired (after Sansa's comment that Joffrey was nothing like Robert inspired Ned's search for Robert's bastards)... but if he sent one of his household (e.g. Jory ) to make initial inquiries, the premier armourer in King's Landing (and a man of discretion) would have been a very logical place to start.

I see three believable possibilities for how ned found him

1. He just ask around

2. Varys placed him there ( who knows why but, he's the only person at court that has the ability to plant someone without anyone else noticing, imo)

3. Tobho Mott suggest it as part of some crazy Braavosi plot

....and it's probably the first

Great Question!

I agree with abisal that it has something to do with trade. Jon Snow and Micken were able to craft a seemingly ideal Bravo blade for Arya.

I also wonder if Ned visited Braavos at some point. He might have accompanied Lord Rickard on some trade mission, or as I think more likely, he went with Robert on a trip from the Vale to Braavos while Jon Arryn was off on other business. I can see the scene:

Robert: Come on Ned, we're going to Braavos.

Ned: Why?

Robert: I want to check out the Courtesans!

Ned: So?

Robert: Come with me it will be fun!

Eventually, Robert wears Ned down and they're off to Braavos.

3. Not a crazy plot, just wanting to be informed about what the new Hand was doing. Robert would be delegating many duties to Ned. Robert had not been a very good ruler , himself. The Iron Bank (and Braavos) would have been naturally curious to see if Ned would make a positive difference... but Ned was difficult to get close to for observation, since he used his own household for pretty much everything.

I should of put complicated instead of crazy. Your senerio isn't that complicated but I could see that being the case

My grand unifying theory holds that FM, IB, all Braavosi ships and LF represent one of 2 great factions vying for control of Westeros. Whatever this gang is up to they have a big enough interest in the young Starks that John, Sansa and Arya are all under it's control at the close of Dance.

So if Ned needs a fencing instructor for his daughter, putting Syrio in his path wouldn't be hard. I like Ned, but he's a chump.

Needle is just a small skinny longsword, not a Bravo blade.

I'm guessing Aron Santigar. He was master-at-arms, and probably the go-to guy to ask about training. Ned probably said he wanted a personal trainer for a smaller individual, Santigar referred him to Syrio knowing the Braavosi have a unique fighting style.

Ned probably figured that a typical Westerosi master at arms wouldn't be quite right for Arya because shed small and skinny, as is Needle, so he looked for something different. I imagine he asked around and thought the former first sword of Braavos was as good as any. I can also imagine Syrio impressing Ned when they first met and Ned being able to recognise his honour and courage, which are essential traits for Stark men.

Both Syrio and Jaquen Hagars presence in KL and their interest in Arya and their influence over her to me is suspicious. To me they could be indicative of another unknown vested interest in the Starks that is yet yo be revealed!
