Since the show is catching up to the book, why doesn't the show...

Ned the Living

...make a flashback season of Robert's Rebellion. We have so many awesome anecdotes from this war in the books, it would make an excellent season to show Robert and Ned in their prime. Robert battling Rhaegar in The Trident, Ned coming to Robert's aid when Robert is wounded and they sound the bells, Ned seeing Lyanna die. Plus, there's so much untold, it would be full of possibilities to flesh out. In addition to that, you could get Sean Bean back in the cast before Ned is revealed to not have been executed.

Many of us have been saying this for a long time...

The problem is the actors, especially the younger ones, who are rapidly aging out of their roles, but there's no way I'd support recasting Bran or Arya. They can't put the series on hold to film the prequel, which would require different sets, and a whole host of other things.

Also, a full RR treatment would inevitably spoil the rest of the series. I know I get tarred as a Targaryen apologist, but the fact remains that...

we don't really know what happened in the lead-up to R+L's disappearance from the Riverlands. Say for instance they met up on the Isle of Faces, or Rhaegar had a conversation with the GoHH, revealing some of the events that are to come.

Don't worry, though. GoT is one of the biggest phenomenons in recent TV history. As long as the show stays this exponentially popular? There WILL be a prequel. Too much money's at stake. Whether it's done on TV or as feature-length films remains to be seen, but you can rest easy that it'll happen.

Because there's not at least 5 years of prequel. Or because acting contracts don't work that way. Or because they'd lose viewers due to disinterest. Or because the actors are going to keep growing up.

But mostly because they don't care about spoiling the ending. Why should they? They paid for the rights, everything about this situation is completely GRRM's fault.

Because it would be boring. I want to see the rest of the story, not a prequel.

That said, I think that, once Jon is presumed dead, Season 6, via Bran, will give us flashbacks. Sort of like The Empire Strikes Back - everything will be falling to pieces, but at least Bran will learn who Jon's father was!

1 year isn't going to make a difference. George has two monstrous books out, he will be hard pressed to get TWOW out by 2017 when the final season is about to air.

Have you seen the latest interview with the actor who plays Jamie, he states George is almost finished with Winds but won't get ADOS out before the last season. However D&D know as much as George does and have access to all his material. I think we need to accept the show will finish before the books.

The above said a prequel movie would be amazing in my eyes and may come out around the same time as the final book.

I asked one of my non book reader friend what he would think if HBO decided to do a flashback season about King Robert instead of making season 5

let's just say he did not have very positive things to say about that idea.....

Most fans of the TV are not book readers. I'm sure that a high percentage of those have no idea whats in the books, or that the series is still unfinished.

Fans tune in to see what happens to Arya, Tyrion, Jaime, Dany, Jon and all the other characters of the show. They have watched some shocking scenes and unexpected twists, they want to see what happens next. Switching to a prequel could result in a massive drop in viewing numbers, which would result in either the show being cancelled, or the budget slashed.

I want, as I'm sure many others do, for this show to go out with a bang. And not in any way like they ended Lost.

No, I haven't. Where is that found?

There's no way that's inside knowledge, he's either mistaken or taking a guess. If the book was done, or even if it was 95% done they'd be shouting that up and down the streets, and they would have put it on the release schedule for 2015. Even GRRM can't take more than 1 year to finish 5% of a book.

George wrote at the end of AFFC that ADWD would be out the following year. It took 6 years. Nothing anyone says can be believed until the book is firmly out in the public's hands.

I don't think either one is. From a narrative point of view, both characters have grown up. Especially Arya. Both her and the actress may as well be adults now.
