[BOOK SPOILERS] Would you watch the show if it overpasses the books?

I've just read that Martin was signed on for another 2 years as executive producer of the show, which seems to me that the show is here to stay at least for a few more years. So I was wondering, if it does come to pass that the show runs out of material before either the next or last book - and GRRM gives his blessing for the show to continue past the point at which the latest book at the time ends and even gives D&D an overview of how he plans to finish the series so that the show stays faithful, would you still watch the show? Would you allow your read of the final book to be spoiled by watching the show first, or would you keep the show locked in some dark place, and wait till the book is released and you've read it before you watch?

It would be hard imagining Martin letting HBO tell the conclusion of his story before he gets the chance to. Besides, the books do not seem to be getting any shorter and they have split book 3 into 2 seasons. Is it hard to imagine them dividing books 4 and 5 into three seasons? Or maybe book 6 will be another monster that takes 2 seasons?

I would try to not watch the show; but I suspect it'd be impossible to avoid all the spoilers, in which case I'd probably give up and watch.

It's not something I'm worried about yet though TBH, I'd say we've got 5-6 years yet before having to answer this question; which SHOULD be enough for GRRM to get the 2 books done, and relies on the show sticking with it to the end.

If Martin was alive and writing, the I'd try my hardest to just wait for the remaining books.

However, if it's a situation where he passes away and the show is finished based off of what he has told the producers, then I'd have no problem watching.

I wouldn't like to be in the producers position if they had to write a new season. Sure they know the ending of the series but there is 1000 miles of plot in between that only one person in the world can piece together. I personally don't think the show will go past 4 seasons since AFFC and ADDWD is very slow to start and introduces way to many characters to bring to a screen(disclaimer: I love those books, it just takes a while to get into the good stuff).

Yes, I would watch it. I watched season one before I read A Game of Thrones, and I don't think it diminished my enjoyment of the novel one bit.

Also I think at that point there would be many significant differences, so even if ultimately the results of the show and the books are roughly the same, they will still be very different experiences.

As you mentioned , and maybe it worth repeating, it has been known for a long time that George had told D and D THE REST OF THE STORY.

That does not mean D and D know how GRRM would elaborate it.

Still , and lord knows, if George does not finish , apparently , apparently, D and D would close out the visual drama.

I do wonder what or if GRRM and D and D have some agreement on this?

Yet, I would watch it .

I would watch it. It's highly likely that the show will catch up to the books. I wouldn't want them to pad the show out with filler and spend more than one season adapting ADWD and AFFC just to let GRRM catch up. He knew this was a possibility and if he can't keep up he has noone to blame but himself. HBO has said that they regret taking more than year-long breaks in between seasons of the Sopranos and the Wire and I doubt that they'd allow a show to be delayed again like that. All of those actors and production crew are not going to put their careers on hold waiting around for GRRM to write his books. I hope and suspect that the showrunners and GRRM have come to some sort of agreement on this. Maybe they can even figure out a way to avoid the Mereneese knot entirely, allowing GRRM another crack at writing his story in a more streamlined way.

It was my understanding that HBO purchased the rights to the entire ASOIF series so Martin couldn't stop HBO if he wanted to finish the books before the show.

This is hypothetical and very unrealistic. Producers are smart enough to avoid this situation. This was one of the factors that made ASOS to split into two seasons.

Here's what i think will happen. Season 3 and 4 are ASOS. Some part of AFFC and ADWD may creep into the finale of season 4. Hopefully, Martin will get TWOW out before season 5 starts. Season 5 and 6 will consist of AFFC and ADWD. Season 7 will be TWOW and may even spill into season 8, depending on the size of the novel.

So after TWOW is out by end of 2014 or early 2015, martin has atleast 3 (possibly more) to finish ADOS.

That depends.

And it's looking likely that it eventually will. Being that I didn't really like how they handled season 2, if they continue that with season 3 (which has some of the best material to work with) I'll probably stop watching it even before they overtake GRRM.
