The Godfather of ASOIAF

King of Winters

Interestingly enough, Jaime also makes a damn good comparison to Sonny when he's still got his hand. Go after my family? I'll attack you in the streets.

The comparison is becoming stronger and stronger, oh God...

And Tyrion, while initially being the most morally sound member of the family, is falling into darkness, quickly becoming the worst Lannister alive and being the one closest ressembling Don Tywin, not to mention that he is about to cast a "very large shadow".

He's Michael...

Oh God, oh man, oh God, oh man!

House Lannister has a general Corleone vibe about it that is so strong, one is almost tempted to wonder if it was intentional.

Tywin is Vito, the Godfather - the Don/Lord and patriarch. Vito made the Corleones the most powerful Mafia family in New York by ruthlessly crushing all the rival criminal gangs in his territory, just as Tywin made the Lannisters powerful by destroying all their rivals in the Westerlands. When a corrupt movie executive became truculent, Vito cowed him by having the head of his favourite horse placed in his bed. When Lord Farman of Faircastle grew truculent, Tywin cowed him by having a lute-player perform "The Rains of Castamere" for him.

Gregor Clegane is Luca Brasi. A brutal thug and murderer, fanatically loyal to the Don, who values him for his deadly skill as a killer, and the fear he inspires in the enemies of the Family. Frequently entrusted with the dirtiest jobs. Ends up getting killed by Solozzo the Turk/Oberyn the Red Viper.

Jaime is Sonny - the Don's eldest son, and the one who is expected to take over the Family Business. Widely feared and mistrusted due to his reputation as a deadly killer with a brutal nature, but his family knows him to be a kind-hearted man, after a fashion. Has little patience, is quick to anger, and allows himself to be ruled by his passions - which leads him into serious trouble down the line.

Cersei is a mix of Fredo - the Don's most devoted child, but also the most incompetent, who inadvertently undermines the Family through his/her actions - and Connie - the girl of the Family, who marries an abusive husband, who her brother threatens to kill for her.

Tyrion is Michael - the Don's youngest son, and the one who is most like him, but who nobody really expects to get into the Family Business. Caused a breach in family relations in his youth, when he disappointed his father (Michael went to fight in the war, Tyrion married a 'whore'). Recieved a facial injury from a corrupt police captain/knight of the Kingsguard. Had a first marriage with a peasant girl (Apollonia/Tysha) who he fell passionately in love with, but the marriage was short and ended in tragedy. The second marriage (Kay/Sansa) was marginally more stable, but his wife strongly disapproved of the Family, and their Business.

Kevan Lannister is Tom Hagen - the Don's right hand man and top advisor. Sound, solid, and capable, he often functions as the voice of reason in the Family's councils. The quintessential good man in service to a bad cause, he remains faithful because of his love for the Don.

I might get some crap for saying this, but what about Stannis? He is a 2nd son, he is unassuming at first, and has patience in respect to reaching his long term goals. He never forgets a slight and he takes everything personal, as did the Godfather. He is also very quiet and reserved. The major difference is that Stannis seems to have little, if not any, love for his immediate family.

Good comparisons!

I agree Tywin could be compared in many ways to Don Vito Corleone.

And he's going to have Cersei garrotted whilst she leaves the city in a palanquin for betraying his elder brother, Robert. Valonqar and Michael Corleone indeed!

I dont like saying tywin=the godfather because the godfather is extremely sympathetic(imo ofc, he is a criminal so others may disagree) and tywin is just really mean and terrible in his methods, far more so then either vito, or micheal.

Yes, Vito doesn't want anyone to avenge Sonny's death and he doesn't try and take out Barzini for Sonny either.

Tywin doesn't equal the Godfather. There are many examples I could point out, but for one...Let's say Jaime (his 1st son) was killed, Tywin would have lost his crap and gone to all out war right away.

Yes, Vito doesn't want anyone to avenge Sonny's death and he doesn't try and take out Barzini for Sonny either.

Not sure if that' sarcasm, but Vito and Michael planned to avenge Sonny for years...Just like Doran Martell did/is doing, to avenge his murdered family (the success of his plans are in question).

Someone should email this to GRRM.
