Small questions v.10014

It always feels a bit off to me too. References to him in D&E suggest he's always been a real nice dude. Maybe it's just because he's a Targ and Targs are not known for being nice.

That was what I thought originally but isn't his identity supposed to be kind of secret? I mean surely Robert didn't know he was at the Wall(or got drunk and forgot anyway) He never comes off as unkind in any of the story that I remember, certainly not in D&E(unless that's a story that is yet to come) or even in the novels.

Why was Benjen allowed to go to WF when Robert arrived to make Ned hand? He is technically no longer a Stark, and he is also not a NW recruiter.

NE aren't prisoners. Just ask the ladies of Moletown. And in this case it was in the interst of the NW. BJ would have been able to plead the NW's need directly to the king in the friendliest of forums.

He's not a secret. He arrived at the Wall with an honor guard led by Brynden Rivers. He's just so old most people forgot about him or never learned.

This isn't exactly a small question, but I want to float it here anyway.

After Brandon went to KL and demanded Rhaegar's death, Aerys had a good reason to think the Starks would rebel against him - hence his summoning of Rickard to the capital and his subsequent execution. On some levels, those decisions make sense.

Then he called for Ned's head - which also makes some sense. With Ned dead, the Lord of Winterfell would be a boy - Benjen.

But why call for Robert's head? That is the only decision of Aerys' that I can't understand.

I mean, sure, he was spurned by the fact Rhaegar took of with Lyanna, but I bet that at any given time there are at least a dozen lords who are angry at the king for some reason.

You might want to check out the Southron Ambitions theories. If they're true then Aerys may have been moving preemptively against a budding alliance that threatened to antagonize his rule.

That's what I meant, secret because everybody who knew who he was is either dead or in a tree.

Was Bloodraven tall?

Are there any quotes which show he's taller than average?

He's shorter than Daemon and Bittersteel. There's an SSM there is a better description in there somewhere but I can't seem to find it at the moment.

At the end of Jaime VI in AFFC, he sends a singer, Tom of Sevenstreams, in to sing Rains of Castamere and Edmure says, “No. Not him. Get him away from me.” Is this because he recognizes the singer or simply because of the song choice?

Tom wrote a song about Edmure's "floopy fish". That's why he's not very fond of singers. Also he was didn't know Tom was Lady Stoneheart's spy.

I did not realize the previous one was locked only after a day or two:)) stupid me :bang:

Technically, can littlefinger become King? Does he have to have royal blood to make a claim despite right of conquest?

Technically, rgiht now no, but he can marry a queen or something like that, but by right of conquest, never, nobles hate him...

Is Pyat Pree on the Silence?

There are many theories about Pyat Pree, one of them is that he is on silence, others with eurom, or even in meeren...

How do the Sealords of Braavos get their title? Are they elected or inherited?

They are elected by the citizens of mighty Bravoos, i think arya talks about it as somone previously mentioned.

In GoT why does Maester Aemon tell Tyrion that he is seldom called kind?

Just after he tells Tyrion that he is a giant.

Well thing that he is a maester, that takes care of people's wounds, what do you say to a man that is pouring wine on an arrow wound? '' You are so kind, maester'' Or when he is giving council he is not saying what the other man wants to hear, but what they need to hear.

Why was Benjen allowed to go to WF when Robert arrived to make Ned hand? He is technically no longer a Stark, and he is also not a NW recruiter.

Why wouldn't he? He was first ranger, so nobody thought he would desert and he was not there to recruit but to talk to the king, Jon was not let to leave to escort Tyrion, cause he was fresh...

He's not a secret. He arrived at the Wall with an honor guard led by Brynden Rivers. He's just so old most people forgot about him or never learned.

It was led by ser duncan the tall, bloodraven was one of the men that joined him, from the black cells.

Well everybody knew that robert knew Lyanna and he was a heavy drinker and loved melee combats, so Aerys might have thought he was on the plan to kill Raeghar with Brandon.

Did tyrion know that littlefinger betrayed him to catelyn in the first book?

Yes, Cat tells him LF said the dagger was his, but he needed LF during his handship.

Was Bloodraven tall?

Are there any quotes which show he's taller than average?

Dunk describes him in the sworn sword:

Six years ago in King’s Landing, Dunk had seen him with his own two eyes, as he rode a pale horse up

the Street of Steel with fifty Raven’s Teeth behind him. That was before King Aerys had ascended to the

Iron Throne and made him the Hand, but even so he cut a striking figure, garbed in smoke and scarlet

with Dark Sister on his hip. His pallid skin and bone-white hair made him look a living corpse. Across

his cheek and chin spread a wine-stain birthmark that was supposed to resemble a red raven, though

Dunk only saw an odd-shaped blotch of discolored skin. He stared so hard that Bloodraven felt it. The

king’s sorcerer had turned to study him as he went by. He had one eye, and that one red. The other was

an empty socket, the gift Bittersteel had given him upon the Redgrass Field. Yet it seemed to Dunk that

both eyes had looked right through his skin, down to his very soul.

There is no mention of height, but I think he was average or around...

At the end of Jaime VI in AFFC, he sends a singer, Tom of Sevenstreams, in to sing Rains of Castamere and Edmure says, “No. Not him. Get him away from me.” Is this because he recognizes the singer or simply because of the song choice?

Because he hated him from when he was young...

Just for the record, I found 2 ssms - Bloodraven was 'tall and wiry', around 6ft.

I typed 6 ft tall IIRC, but I deleted it :dunce:

Anyone know how tall Rattleshirt and Mance were?

I'm trying to figure out if ruby glamours effect perceived height.

We know that mance was heigher, so yeah the ruby does that...

There's this quote in ADwD:

“Emmett, find some armor for him. I want him in steel, not old bones.”

Once clad in mail and plate, the Lord of Bones seemed to stand a little straighter. He seemed taller too, his shoulders thicker and more powerful than Jon would have thought.

It seems that Mance is in fact taller than Rattleshirt and the glamour was less effective without the bones.

ETA. This would suggest that ruby glamours do have an effect on the wearers perceived height.

Why was Benjen allowed to go to WF when Robert arrived to make Ned hand? He is technically no longer a Stark, and he is also not a NW recruiter.

It was the first time for years that a king had visited the north and there were representatives present from all of the major houses at the feast that Benjen attended.

It would have been seen as a slight if the Wall did not send someone, especially by the lannisters.

Benjen was born the brother of a Lord Paramount, and as such, in the eyes of Westerosi society, would have been the most significant member of the watch. (Aemon Would have been persona no grata with Robert as a member of a deposed house, and had probably, as has been mentioned above, been forgotten about as a Prince).

He does not seem to have been there to recruit, or talk to Robert about recruits, Jon came to the decision pretty much by himself, and the recruits that Yoren picked up were a pretty ropy lot generally.

Besides being an high ranking officer, and brother to Ned....

1. IIRC All of the Stark children knew Benjen, even Rickon. This would imply that he has been to WF somewhat often, or at very least had been there often enought that an 8 and 3 year old knew him.

2. IIRC Mormont tells Jon something to the effect that he has been hasn't been at the Wall long enough to be trusted to go home, and come back.

3. We know that GRRM wrote about 6 chapters/scenes before stopping and building the history and rules. This is likely one of them, and it may have been that reworking it, may have meant starting from scratch, so it was left in. There is another scene where Robert talks about making Jaime warden in the East, that we know that it was one of the first chapters, and often people ask about it.
