  1. Probably the case most places in the states as well, but most restaurants here have catch bins outside to dump oil in. It's cheaper than paying for the trap cleaning (or at least extends the interval between cleanings). I cleaned out the grease trap at my ex gfs bagel shop (I think I even posted about it here) and it was the single grossest moment of my life, with nothing else even coming close. A paragon for all other moments of disgust to aspire to. Eta: We were literally counting pennies at the time but happy to figure out where to come up with money to pay to clean the trap.
  2. Not instead of, but rather in tandem with.
  3. Do not dump oil down a drain. It can get poured into a container once it's not scalding hot and then disposed of. It will clog your pipes like they were sclerotic blood vessels. Running hot water while you dump it only spreads it out further from your sink throughout the plumbing infrastructure. This is why restaurants have grease disposal containers outside.
  4. Roommate and I are having a couple friends over for dinner tonight. I've cut my meat consumption down to almost nothing recently but tonight am doing baby back ribs and a tritip. Bunch of roast root veggies, celeriac, fennel, potatoes, parsnips, daikon. Greens. Oh and teriyaki broccoli. Kind of hoping this rain and then hard freeze leaves the roads impassable for the holidays, and makes an easy excuse of staying home in lieu of travelling to see family, so that I can eat leftovers and be lazy.
  5. RIP Terry Hall, thank you for all the music. I've probably listened to The Specials and More Specials as much as anything else my life. What a bummer
  6. Not enough. I'm trying to work up the nerve to get a flock of peafowl so I have the loudest household in the neighborhood, but I know I'd end up evicted or murdered by my neighbors. But a boy can dream.
  7. Even analog clocks were a sad and disgusting technological development. Sun dials, water clocks, and domesticated fowl are the only ethical methods of horology.
  8. Is that motivation consistent over time? Are there any reasons that police departments might want to emphasize higher crime in 2020? Did anything happen culturally in US in 2020 or after that might have changed public perceptions of policing? Eta: but that wasn't really the point anyway- we have incomplete data from the end of 2020 on, and again, that piece I linked that you didn't read is a criticism of using this data, regardless of what it says, to make decisions about police funding. The "crime" statistics, even assuming any bias is consistent over time, are not an accurate picture of crime in the US, regardless of whether or not that's been the standard metric. Criticizing IQ as a measure of intelligence doesn't become invalid because people relied on it for a long time.
  9. I mean you can just say you don't give a shit about why data easily manipulated by police departments might not be representative of actual crime / harm levels. Like, there are actual reasons that people are questioning the collection and interpretation of crime data. It's not some fucking "left" conspiracy.
  10. Fair enough, I guess, although from a link on the page you provided, in 2021 the FBI changed how it collects crime data, so it might be difficult to make comparisons to 2020 and points beyond. And obviously 2020 could be an anomaly. Additionally, I think the point you're making about "the left has been citing this data for 30 years so now they're stuck with it" is some kind of fallacy- is Alec Karakatsanis not allowed to question the veracity of police reported data just because "the left" has been citing a decrease in violent crime the last 30 years? That seems very bizarre, particularly given the change in data collection, beyond the people reporting it having all sorts of reasons to manipulate the data, which are detailed in the A.K. piece.
  11. Is crime actually up? Or are a few police generated statistics up? What's it up from/to? If you end up creating more crime (like the one in the video Scot linked) from police then what's the point? https://www.currentaffairs.org/2020/08/why-crime-isnt-the-question-and-police-arent-the-answer If you keep throwing more money at police this is what they do with it. "My house is on fire, I'm going to throw gasoline on it. Not addressing it would be idiotic on a number of levels". Brilliant.
  12. It was in Keller, Texas. Earlier this year Biden encouraged cities to use unspent COVID funds on "crime prevention". This is what "crime prevention" looks like.
  13. They just need better training and maybe some more boots [on] the ground
  14. Just asked around and 9/10 Westeros boarders interviewed said that if you read all of my posts in chronological order that those posts comprise The Best of the Internet. Some have been eaten by the board, that's your loss. Thank you in advance for the recognition and congratulations, it's much appreciated and would be kind of fucked up if you hadn't acknowledged, so I do appreciate it.
  15. That question I asked was both sarcastic and rhetorical. Eta: it was intended to show how ridiculous it is to demand the LGBTQ community to let cops do performative allyship for PR while still treating LGBTQ individuals like shit.
  16. Good thing Biden wants to add 100,000 more cops. Disgusting.
  17. I am investing every cent I own into raw milk futures.
  18. Plus they are legally allowed to use violence pretty much whenever they want. A function of the police, historically, has been to use violence against labor movements and keep unions in line.
  19. All excellent points and analysis of the suffering and exploitation inherent in market participation! I'd argue that if you recognize that there is no ethical consumption/ market participation under capitalism you need not submit to the nihilism of "if you can't beat em, join em", but instead limit your participation in any of the slings and arrows you mentioned above, where possible. Obviously this will vary from person to person and situation. Maybe you go about barefoot or on home made shoes. Maybe you don't buy quite so many Nikes. Maybe you live an ascetic life in all things except sneakers, and have 300 pairs of Air Jordans lining the wall of the cave at your carbon-net-negative organic farm. This is getting a bit of topic from the OP, but universal suffering and exploitation need not be embraced.
  20. I think it's a Sheyic vs Kuniuric(?) thing: Eta: and apparently the trans-haurim came up 9 years ago.
  21. Yeah this also jives with that interview (or blog post?) where he talked about reading DeLillo (trying to find meaning in a meaningless world) and wanting to explore the opposite.
  22. Hey at least RSB finished it. A very Oh John Ringo No moment.
