I really need to catch up on my Kay. Not sure if I'm 2 or 3 books behind. I'm looking at two of them in hardcover on my bookshelf, unread, right now. That said, would be interested in an alternate history where either Kitai or the European-equivalents attempt to colonize the Americas-equivalent, but they find a continent of 100 million people resisting them, due to the natives having magical vaccines to all the alien diseases the would-be conquerers bring.

Hugo Nominations & Awards: 2021 and Onward
SpaceChampion replied to LugaJetboyGirl's topic in Literature
That really seems like watering down the category of what is considered fantasy quite a bit. -
My only complaint is they didn't clearly make the goat that helps Mal escape to be Milo the goat from the train crossing. Is it the same? My head canon is that Milo is another amplifier, more powerful than that Stag with the death wish.

Yeah, might be top of the list for best shows of 2021 for me maybe.

So is this another chosen one / secret hidden royalty thing?

Youtube keeps bubbling up B5-related videos. Here's one with Michael O'Hare speaking at a London convention in 1995. I think the Babcom convention. He's quite funny!

Season 2 started and I love it. That Molly Cobb though, smexy, brave and with a death wish or something. Anyone else watching this?

A few years old, but interview with Walter Koenig discussing meeting JMS and doing the Bester role. That channel has several videos with Mumy and JMS. JMS on O'Hare's illness:

HBO Planning Dunk and Egg, Other Thrones-properties
SpaceChampion replied to Westeros's topic in Game of Thrones News
I saw a suggestion of Tom Hopper from Umbrella Academy as Dunk. I'd think this series wouldn't need 10 episodes a season. 4 to 6 might be the right length, and they'd still need to flesh it out doing at least 2 D&E stories per season. First season could be The Hedge Knight plus whatever happened in Dorne, though I think in the novellas that happens after The Sworn Sword. This seems like it would be better as a series of movies. -

I suppose I might as well quote the original post about JMS announcing he's the executor:
-
So! J. Michale Straczynski was appointed executor of Harlan Ellison's estate, and has been announcing one word per day a five word phrase of something mysterious he is producing... The 3 words so far released are "The Last Dangeous...' I assume it'll be 4 words of the title and a year of publication. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Dangerous_Visions

Usually in a GGK novel between moving scenes there is a sex interlude. Can't start a new thread until there is one.

Can anything be done (css adjustment for instance) about the size issue when links to tweets (and facebook posts and youtube videos too imagine) are embedded? here's what is looks like:

JMS has another 5-season sequel series in mind when he originally blocked out the story prior to season 1 of B5. He heavily cannibalized from the sequel series to pack it into B5. Pretty much all of season 5 is material from those ideas, but it also seeps into seasons 2, 3 and 4. Overall what we got was MUCH better than he originally planned.

It's not the label dwarf planet I'm objecting to, it's the terrible definition the IAU invented that's at issue. The term was never applied to a nebulous concept of "not clearing the neighborhood" before.
-
That's circular logic. Astronomers decided to invent the term dwarf planet, based on non-geological characteristics, when they are not the ones who study planets. The term didn't exist before. They didn't just find it in a trash bin some where. A definition based on "not clearing the neighborhood of the orbit" of other objects when Jupiter, Neptune, Mars, Earth, Uranus, and Venus don't even do that (all have trojan asteroids in their lagrangian points) and the criteria is both wrong and not useful in any way.
-
I never studied Io in grad school, but I can tell you that's planetary geology, not astrophysics. Quite different. I only mention this to say that letting astronomers decide that Pluto isn't a planet is stupid, since they do not even study planets other than their albedo and orbits and interactions with other objects (which is astronomy not astrophysics), but rather geologists study things like tectonism and vulcanism, and deciphering the chronology of a planet's development over time. /rant.

ISN wasn't an example of criticizing free press. It was an example of criticizing authoritarians who get into power and then turn the press into a mouthpiece for their propaganda, and for stroking the ego of the big boss in charge.

The SFF All-Time Sale List (vol 2) (updated Dec 2018)
SpaceChampion replied to Werthead's topic in Literature
If you cut it off at 200, then the entry point is 1.5M books solds (!!!). That just cuts off a lot of big names, like Iain Banks, Dan Simmons, Naomi Novik... Would it make more sense to use a # books sold limit, say 1 million? -
Kind of similar in themes and emotions seen in his other work. It's been a while, I don't really remember a lot. Old tragedy continuing on into the present, as it does with history.
