    Hey Longie!! :D

Great to see you, I hope you're well.

Yep, that link is an excellent resource for everything 'Bran's Growing Powers'. @Tijgy did a fabulous job grouping it all together. Hopefully you enjoy re-reading the posts, there's some really cool chat in those threads.

Several people did great work in those threads! :D

Alicent seems to have let go of a lot of her anger and resentment towards Rhaenyra by EP8, perhaps because her slashing Rhaenyra with the dagger may have actually provided her with the catharsis she needed.

Did Jon kill Dany with the catspaw dagger? I didn’t think he did, but I could be wrong.

In After The Episode they actually explain Alicent went more religious because she used her religion to feel less guilty of the fact she hurt Rhaenyra.

I don't think it was clear at all.

I think she was THINKING about it but Alicent has been on this road for 16 years. Do we really think she would be turned around by Viserys' speech at the table?

She was turned around by Rhaenyra's speech. When Rhaenyra showed appreciation for the fact she took care of her father during the time Rhaenyra was at dragonstone.

It's pretty simple- Viserys REFUSES to believe it. He heard the rumors, but buried his head in the sand.

I think he knows the truth but choses not to acknowledge it.  Rhaenyra is the person he loves the most. So he will protect her.

And the reason why Alicent is so angry/jealous is because he will always chose Rhaenyra over her or her children. Just like when he refuses to punish someone for maiming her child but at the same time threatens everyone to remove his/her tongue for speaking the truth about the childrens' parentage.

that's my read as well . but the show made an attempt to make her sympathetic with MANY likeable qualities and for half the season at that , only to jump 10 years and change it 180 degrees . besides, if you don't want to have a smooth transition between the years and want to leave so much to imagination , it's better to use flashbacks for the past and spend time on getting deep into adult characters throughout the season rather than use a linear structure with far too many time jumps.

To be honest, I have personally still more sympathy for showAlicent than for showRhaenyra even after the time jump. I personally don't understand all the hate.

I don't think she cared if people noticed or not. As Daemon said, "You're the dragon, your word is truth and law".  I think she very much agrees with that.

She keeps saying that telling the truth ('insulting her virtue') is treason. She did it when she lied to Alicent in the godswood when she swore on her mother's memory Daemon didn't touch her. And after she claimed Aemond was rightfully punished by losing his eye because he called her sons bastards, she thanks her father when he threatens to cut the tongue of everyone who tells the truth about her sons' parentage.

  7. First, I want say to the OP this is an amazing thread which lead to several interesting observations.

Just a little addition (but I think it is already said in some other threads).

Bran means in Welsh raven. It also refers to Bran the Blessed, the son of Llyr, the god of the sea (someone earlier in this thread made the connection between the Stark children, wolf and flow; Bran is of course also the son of Cat). Bran the Blessed was king of Britain.

Brandon can be also seen as a variant of the Irish name Brendan/Bréannain which is derived from the Welsh word meaning prince.

Further is Brandon also a surname which was derived from a place name meaning "hill covered with broom". Broom is a short of shrub. There is a popular theory that the name of the House Plantagenet mayhave been derived from the common broom which was then known as "Planta Genista". It was used by some English kings as a royal emblem. The war of the Roses, the struggle between two cadet branches of the House Plantagenet, was a source of inspiration for GRRM.

The one character in the books who was compated to Winter-fell, is of course Bran: The stone is strong, Bran told himself, the roots of the trees go deep, and under the ground the Kings of Winter sit their thrones. So long as those remainded, Winterfell remained. It was not dead, just broken. Like me, he thought. I'm not dead either."

In the Bran's Powers Reread Thread we did speak about the possible meanings of fell. @ravenous reader and @Wizz-The-Smith (that stupid tag doesn't want to work) refer actually to another thread by @Seams. (the Seams one I think). And during our discussion @ravenous reader and @Wizz-The-Smith said that "fell" also meant hill and that Winterfell is built on a hill (The builders had not even levelled the earth; there were hills and valleys behind the walls of Winterfell.  There was a covered bridge that went from the fourth floor of the bell tower across to the second floor of the rookery) And the caste is of course compared to tree.

So Brandon is derived from a place name which means hill covered with broom, a plant. And Winterfell is a place/a castle on a (hollow) hill resembling a tree.

    ---

You have also Brynden Rivers - whose nickname is Bloodraven. You can say his name is some sort of bastard version of the name Brandon: the Riverlands adapted this (typical northern?) name to something more common to their dialect, ... Brynden is the son of a king. But because he is a bastard, he can never truly become completely a prince (=Brandon).

Brynden Rivers lives in a hollow hill and sits on a throne of weirwood roots.

  8. It was not bad as the last one:

    - I liked the Bran and Meera scenes. Horrible they called Hodor Willas and not Waldar. I hope they flesh Lyanna more out but than this scene and the ToJ but that is something we will see in the future. Sadly, no Summer I am generous: 1,5/2 + bonus point Bran

    - Still don't know why Davos is so obsessed with Ghost. I laughed when the wildlings arrived. A comedy. Jeey, Olly is imprisoned. What is going to happen to him now. Except for Carice amazing acting, the resurrection scene was not that good. And I want Ghost to be more active? 0,5/2 for Carice acting and +1 for Ghost

    - King's Landing. No idea what they were saying actually. Only the first scene was good. And they showed that the asshole talking was really something inappropriate. Laughed with his death. And then the rest of scenes. No idea what was happening? 0,5/1

    - No comment on Arya's scene 0/1

    - Theon mentioned Robb! (bonus point). Alfie Allen was amazing like always. Brienne showed finally more emotion than just kill the enemies. Brienne lied about Sandor? Or she omitted at least she tried to kill him? Theon and Sansa talk was very good until Theon said I am going home. 0,5/1 for Alfie Allen and Sansa/Theon talk +1 Robb

-Tyrion playing Quent without being burned :dunno: Another of his tasteless jokes. Oh, yes, I want to punch you in the face. 0/1 -1 tasteless joke

    - No comment on the Ironborn scene. Sad King Balon is dead  0/1

    - Roose R.I.P. Why did you need to kill a baby? Only the atmosphere during Walda's death was good. 0/1

Wow, a 5/10. Congrats Dave Hill

I'm just sick and tired that people rate an episode basicly on arguments like 'Doran & Hotah got killed off so easy, but they are so badass in the books'.

No, it is about the fact Ellaria decided to kill the brother and the nephew of Oberyn, the guy who greatest desire was to revenge the death of his sister and her children.

It is about the fact Elllaria says "weak men cannot rule" while at the same time it is said Doran does care about his people and doesn't want to risk their safety for REVENGE.

It is about the fact Ellaria and Sandsnakes are just four one-dimensional female villains without any other emotion than ANGER and DESIRE for REVENGE while at the same time we should see this as a form of empowerment?

The problems with Dorne is big enough without you would even compare it to the books.

And in the end it is not wrong to say you do not like a certain storyline because it is different from the books. Some people here really love certain parts of the books and they can feel disappointed if it is changed from the books. There is nothing wrong with that.

    Chebyshov,

Have you tried clearing your cache? If yes, I'll report this to Invision.

I had the same problem and it indeeds helps to clear your cache. So thank you

  11. Let start with 5

There were no gratuitous sex scenes: +3

    Dany & Tyrion: -2

    Arya Cockels: +1

    "Lana" instead of Cat: -1

    Olly: - 2

Sansa finds out about Rickon and Bran: +1

Whights: +1 (just because I started to laugh)

Wildlings: -1 (didn't like how they were portraited)

    Wun wun: + 1

    No Ghost: -1

    Night King?: -2

    So conclusion: 3

  12. There were two very beautiful scenes in this episode:

    - Talk between Barristan/Dany

    - Shireen/Stannis

I especially like the talk between Barristan and Dany. I also like how they are starting to refer to Lyanna, Rhaegar and Jon's mother and Margaery was finally not a bitch to just be a bitch but was starting to use her cunning

But it is pity they are overshadowed by some things that absolutely I dislike

"All smiles died"? Really? Does you really need to make LF say exactly those words? I don't really mind it was LF the one who told the story. But please don't let them use those words (who represent for me all the grief Ned felt because of the war, the dead of his sister, ...)

    - LF's plan still don't make any sense

    - Jon and Mel. While I like Jon made the decision to refuse, it thought this scene was just wrong, gratuitous and distasteful. When I watch tv, I am normally not saying each second a curse word. Which I know I did. What was the point of this scene? What was the point of "You know nothing"? Did Ygritte warg Mel?

    - Ellaria. First of all, this entire story line is butchered. Second, I don't feel any desire for vengeance by them. They say it but I did not really feel it.

    Lets give it 2

  13. Kit Harrington was amazing. I could see in him the mannerism of Sean Bean/Ned Stark. He is even more moodier. Sophie Turner her acting was also very good. I loved Alfie Allen of course in the few scenes he was in.

I hope Ramsay was insincere towards LF otherwise it doesn't make any sense what is happening.

LF actually doesn't make any sense. He is going against the Lannisters and the Boltons at the same time? That is a very great risk. And I can't believe he cares about Sansa and gives her to Ramsay at the same time.

I loved Davos had his own lines and was not just standing next to Stannis all the time.

The House of White and Black was amazingly designed.

    Lets give it a 7

  14. To be fair and without nickping, I must give it a 7 because it is better than the first one.

I loved the interaction between Bronn and Lollys. It was rather sweet (Stupid Bracken!).

I thought it was strange first Arya was not admitted and then well after threatening some guys?

Meereen was also good and finally Dany was not totally wooden in this entire episode. So yeah

Lyanna!!! She came in it while somebody in this forum said once to me I should not hope for it (but she is the Lady Mormont. So no sisters? :crying: ) Gives the episode 2 points extra

Sansa/Brienne and Jaime/Cersei were strange scenes.

    Pod was hilarious.

  15. But that was the first thing I wondered about. How could he eat and shit in there?

Me too, glad they gave us the answer. Normally those things are never answered while they are quite important

The debate between Mance and Jon was absurd. Mance was just about to invade Westeros to march south and it would be a war he knew he could not win. So along comes, here is a great deal that will save a lot of wildlings, specifically women and children. They get land, and made citizens of Westeros and the men just have to do the same thing they were doing but for a different king. "Ummm No I won't except." Why? "Cause"

WTF was that? That was D&D going we don't want this character on the show anymore, bye bye. I don't want to help Stannis, I don't want to help the Wildlings, I just wnt to die. That's pride "no" then what is it? "Cause" So mance would rather let tens of thousands of women and children die, then bend the knee? Nice. And why? Because he didn't want to fight a war, that was already going to be fought by him. What a train wreck of a scene, and Jon who is usually good at negotiating in the books, is basically like, well ok then. Next time just skip the scene and kill the dude for attacking Westeros.

Actually, in one way it would be strange Mance would have knelt to Stannis as it would be strange as he did that in the finale of last season. While he wants to save his people, would he give up his freedom and the freedom of people to do that? Would he not give them that as their own choice? Stannis was only planning to use them. They would not be the free folk any longer.

You are probably right it is strange he didn't choose to save his people but how many would have died in the war between Stannis and Bolton.

I am however probably biased because I don't want a Stannis/Wildling and Roose/Vale(?) war instead of a "Northern civil war". I still hope the Wildlings would be save from the WW/Others but not when they become Stannis' army.

    Stannis is hilarious.

    Season 3:

Stannis: The Usurper Robb Stark, WOOT yeah he's dead killed by his own bannermen.

    Season 5:

Stannis: The traitor Roose Bolton who planted his knife in Robb Stark's heart? I'm going to mount his head on a spike.

Roose: NOTHING I DO IS GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU!

:agree: And didn't Stannis "leeched" Robb. So avenging someone's murder while you wanted that someone death? Stil he gets the support then from the Northern bannermen (however they are totally not mentioned in this episode). It is however one way to manipulate Jon into doing what he wants. How to convince Jon: 1) save thousands of wildlings, 2) revenge on his death murder. It is actually the only reason why Stannis would so be interested in avenging Robb. Or maybe he wants to punish Roose for the murder?

It looks to me like if we are being set up to eventually see Sweetrobin again. He'll come back having taken a level in badass from Lord Royce's School for Knights and Squires it seems--confirming my suspicions that they're just going to merge Sweetrobin and Harry the Heir into one person in a later season (if either has a greater role to play) (...)

It is known SR will be the ruler of Westeros.

    Good points

Unlike in the books, I liked Tyrion self pity in the series. PD made it less irritating. But probably one of the reasons it is less annoying you hear only when he says something self pitying, you can't hear all his thoughts. And the actor who plays Daario, made me actually like Daario while in my opinion in the books he is a very useless character.

I also cheered on the dragons when they attacked Dany. Payback for locking them up.

I was also happy Jon killed MR with an arrow instead of burning him. I was started becoming afraid he would really burned to death. (I really think D&D are more evil than GRRM.

I think it was actually quite interesting to give Mance the choice between kneeling to save their people and choosing freedom. Jon is actually a descendent of someone who did kneel (The King who knelt). However I never wanted Mance to be dead, I still it would be totally wrong if Mance did kneel. So I am happy they did not do that.

    Bad points

We don't know what is going to happen but I will get really get angry if Stannis' army is only built out of wildlings instead of people of the North. I get it when the wildlings go south of the wall to help the NW to protect the Wall but please no, don't let them fight the war between Stannis and Roose. I will have the same opinion about the army of the Vale standing behind Roose/Sansa. In my eyes it would completely destroy the dynamic in the North.

Everyone (or Stannis at least) knows RB was the man who killed Robb. Really. It thought it had to be a secret? At least it would not be common knowledge at Dragonstone and the Wall? Really?

Dany was annoying as ever."I am a queen. I don't compromise." Really Dany. No compromise or not listening to your people leads to uprisings and rebellions. If you need entire army to control your city, you are doing something wrong!

No valonquor in the flashback? No reason anymore why Cersei is so afraid.

And no Bran :-( (a point for the entire season).

Edit: I forgot to say. What are they doing with Varys? Group of people who wants to place a good queen in Westeros/supported the restoration of the Targ dynasty? And the known members are Illyrio and Varys? Why would they care about Westeros? And indeed really sad they left out of Aegon and Griff; makes less sense to me.
