Frey Kings
The one that attacked Jeor Mormont in AGOT. That means the others can raise dead corpses without required distance. Also it went after Jeor and not the bastard of winterfell proving Starks = The Others. Night's King/13th lord commander was a Stark who mated with the others. eyenon15
To add to your question if I may.where the wight was raised was on the South side of the Wall correct? The side the Others can't pass because of the magic contained in the Wall.but they can raise corpses on the other side? Or how does that work.
divine_moose
Stepping into the realm of whimsy and speculation, It's implied that the wight went after Jeor because Othor knew who he was. As far as we know, Othor didn't meet and probably didn't even know what Jon Snow looked like. The wight had no way of recognizing him as a Stark bastard. So the top officer would make a better target than a fresh recruit. Pretty sure wights try and attack Bran at some point as well. As far as getting a wight south of the Wall, I think it had something to do with Sworn Brothers willingly, albeit unknowingly, bringing it through the wards - similar to how Sam had to "unlock" the Black Gate for Bran & Co. The 4th head of dragon
They weren't raised on the south side, the NW carried them south to castle black. And we do not know whether it is the wall that coldhand cannot pass, or the black gate only.

They raise it on the north side and it gets carried through gate and at some point the grenade goes off and the wight gets up and starts killing? The 4th head of dragon
So it's like a grenade? They raise it on the north side and it gets carried through gate and at some point the grenade goes off and the wight gets up and starts killing? I would say a Trojan Horse, but yes, it's what I'm saying.

Mithras
They were already wights when they were found.
Victor227
They were wights when they were found indeed. The big tell was that their eye colors had changed. It's mentioned by one of the rangers when they were examining the bodies prior to dragging them back.
eyenon15
That brings on more questions is it like a grenade where they stand up after a specific amount of time or is it like C4 where an Other pushes a metaphorical button when they want the wight to stand up and start killing? It wasn't quite dark when they found Othor and Jafer Flowers. They rose once it was dark. We've yet to see a wight during daylight. It seems to me the dark serves their purposes. Trojan Horse is an apt description. Though rather than operating under the memories that remain to them, I tend to think wights are controlled by a hive-mind consciousness. Behind this control, I believe, are the half-forgotten demons out of legend, the inhuman Others... If I'm right, that means that the Others sought to assassinate Jeor Mormont, rather than the wight holding on to some grudge he had against the Lord Commander in life. It should be noted as well that Othor and Jafer were Benjen Stark's men, which for me, makes it seem unlikely they would want the Lord Commander dead. I prefer the remotely controlled hive-mind scenario...

Mithras
We've yet to see a wight during daylight. When the wights attacked Bran's party in the final ramp, the sun had not set yet.
Mithras
What is interesting is that one of those men was raised as a wight and the other one nearly chopped his head off. But we know that wights require a bit more than that to kill. So the wight disemboweled his unfortunate brother. This is an important point in speculating about Benjen's fate. I think that it is mentioned that they only act during the night. So during the day they stay dead and at night they seek warm blood (the Long Night that the Others want has something to do with this, wanting to hold their magic indefinately). What is interesting is that the wight went for Jeor Mormont, I mean he could have attacked anyone on the way... so this suggests some sort of mission. However it's all speculating until we find out more
Voice
When the wights attacked Bran's party in the final ramp, the sun had not set yet. Nope. The wights attacked just as the darkness fell. Bran II ADWD The raven shrieked again. “Hodor,” whispered Hodor. He had his hands tucked up beneath his armpits. Icicles hung from the brown briar of his beard, and his moustache was a lump of frozen snot, glittering redly in the light of the sunset. “Those wolves are close as well,” Bran warned them. “The ones that have been following us. Summer can smell them whenever we’re downwind.” “Wolves are the least of our woes,” said Coldhands. “We have to climb. It will be dark soon. You would do well to be inside before night comes. Your warmth will draw them.” He glanced to the west, where the light of the setting sun could be seen dimly through the trees, like the glow of a distant fire. [...] Bran blinked back a tear and felt it freeze upon his cheek. Coldhands took Hodor by the arm. “The light is fading. If they’re not here now, they will be soon. Come.” [...] The last light had vanished from amongst the trees by then. Night had fallen. Coldhands was hacking and cutting at the circle of dead men that surrounded him. Summer was tearing at the one that he’d brought down, its face between his teeth. No one was paying any mind to Bran. He crawled a little higher, dragging his useless legs behind him. If I can reach that cave … I think that it is mentioned that they only act during the night. However it's all speculating until we find out more Agreed. As Old Nan said, they first came in the long night. They thrive in darkness and vanish by day. They bring the cold or the cold brings them. Either way, their territory becomes frozen, dead, and dark. That is their native habitat, and I believe they seek to extend that habitat southward. Not because they are hungry for land, but because they hate life. I also am of the mind Jeor Mormont was their mission. The Others wanted the Lord Commander dead for some reason or another, and sent a wight to him in the night. Either the chaos and disarray of a LC murdered by a dead brother would scare the watch, and therefore weaken the Wall, or it would increase the likelihood of Jon getting the job. It is strange the wight passed right by Jon to get to Jeor.
