I don't know anything about his crime or sentence but even murderers come up for parole in some places. The Manson murderers for instance, have all been up for it several times. Doesn't mean they'll get it, none of them(Manson family) have ever. But performing a heroic feat that likely saved other innocent people seems like a great way to get credit for redemption.
