Gijon 2008

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm Ellaria Sand spanish fan and Asshai's staff member. Our big boss, aka Jon Nieve or Seton Supremo de Asshai, dixit:

Hello, I'm Jon Nieve, webmaster of asshai.com. First of all, thanks for the nice words and for writing to us. We are very excited about the visit, and we hope that Spanish fans will give a good time to Martin, Parris and everybody who will come to Spain.

At least people who visit our web will have any information possible.

Thanks again.

Gijon, Madrid, Barcelona... No Seville??? In Dorne we would be very happy to see you....pleeeeeease.

Bienvenida Ellaria,

Un saludo a los fans de Asshai de parte de un muy holgazán seguidor de A Song of Ice and Fire.

A ver si logramos que George R.R. Martin quede tan contento con esta visita por estas tierras como lo hizo la última vez (supongo que esto ayudó a que quisiera repetir).

Ran,

I really interested in going to Gijón, I'll try to contact the guys from Gigamesh and ask them for information. Any news that I can get from them I'll post them here. I suppose that having one of the Semana Negra's coordinators as an information source will make my efforts redundant but I'll try anyway. It could give us information about George visit to Barcelona.

Wow. Suddenly a wave of interest. Cool. :)

I think the things I'm most concerned about are what there is in the way of hotel, hostel, and rental options, and what events if any are already set down in the schedule (I'd guess very few). Links to tourism related sites might be good to get an idea of interesting things to see and do while there.

Sounds good Ran. The only other thing I could think of is how would they recommend getting to Gijon. Assuming one flies into Madrid. Just in case there is something obvious missed.

Cristina's a dynamo! She answered our questions here before I even got around to mailing her. :) Here's what she wrote:

We have no program for Semana Negra yet, in fact won't have it till late May. We will be advancing news in our web site, and hopefully this will be the year we will get it in English, too.

I think the easiest and cheapest way to book flights to Gijon (Asturias) is using portals like http://www.trabber.com . Our Airport code is OVD (that stands for Oviedo, capital of Asturias region). There is a regular bus service from the airport to the center of Gijon, with departures every hour or so. The trip from the airport takes about 30 minutes. There is a website for that too, www.alsa.es.

For international flights, you may also want to check near airports, like Bilbao or Valladolid. Lots of cheap flights companies use them. Alsa buses company gives service from those airports to Gijon, too. Anyway, Madrid is probably the best option for international travelers.

About hotels and hostels, you can check http://www.gijon.info/. If you need any help with this issue, please ask me. I will be very gald if I can help any way.

Greetings, everyone ^_^.

This is my first post in this forum (which is quite different to the ones I usually post on, so I'm a bit lost), but I hope it's not the last (though to be honest, to discuss ASOIAF topics I use Asshai.com forum -easier for me to express myself; I'm Spanish).

I'm so excited that GRRM is coming to Spain I still can't believe it. But what's most important, loads of international fans could come too, and that's really cool. I was happy to know that he could be coming to Madrid too, so if I couldn't manage to go to Gijón I could see him anyway... but fortunately the Semana Negra festival starts in July and that means no university exams are taking place. I'm really looking forward to the event.

So I just wanted to introduce myself, say hello and wander around and see where I could post^^. This may not be the thread to say this but I think this site rocks. I love the Citadel section and I'm hoping to discover the others soon.

If you have any questions or requests about Spain, don't hesitate to ask, I'll be more than glad to help travellers in trouble ^-^.

Cheers!

PS. I didn't know Cristina Macía was one of the coordinators of the Semana Negra festival -she's the translator of ASOIAF books to Spanish^^.

PS2. Please forgive my English. I just hope I made myself understood.

Your English is very good indeed. Welcome to the board, Ashara. :) The more native Spaniards about, the better, as inevitably questions will be coming up about things to do, places to see, sources of various kinds of information, and so on. :)

I am pretty interested in this, since a few years ago where I had no chance. I might drive instead though (now that makes a change from nearly everywhere in Europe) if maybe some friends of mine will be interested. If there were any portuguese stops on this tour (one can hope! the local release promotion has been very impressive) it would be even nicer, but still this is sounding fascinating to me ever since I found out about these festivals. and closeish!

Hi everyone :)

I'm a Spanish fan of Asshai (hi, Ashara ^^ ;) ). I would want to know if GRRM has any idea about when he will come to Gijon (and maybe Madrid or Barcelona), we must begin to plan our trips and too many things, and knowing when is he coming will be very helpful.

Also, I would want to say how great is the web and the forum. The Citadel's very useful, and the forum has many interesting topics.

Well, thank you for any information and sorry for the mistakes I've probably made in the message.

Hi Warden. I'm not sure of GRRM's plans as of now. I should have asked him when I had the chance. Parris will probably spot this thread in the next week or so and may clarify what's going on. I imagine his Spanish publishers will set up some signings, so they will probably have an idea also. In fact, someone will probably drop into this thread soon who will know a lot more than I. :)

From what Parris said previously, George and she will be arriving in Gijon for the start of the festival, which begins July 11. They will be there for about a week. Doubtless more information will come about signings elsewhere in Spain when those plans are settled. :)

hello to our new spanish poster, good to have you join us.

We still haven't gotten all the dates sorted out for our trip to Spain.

We are going up to the opening of Semana Negra on the Black Train for the opening, and will be there for 6-7 days.

George will be doing appearances/signings in Madrid and Barcelona, perhaps other cities, but those two are certain. He has been warned that he's become a lot more popular since he visited in 2001, and will be doing a lot more work this time around. Semana Negra was a true delight, very informal and lots of interesting people attend. Gijon was a wonderful experience, you might want to consider coming up there to enjoy Semana Negra, and despite the warnings, my sense is that the time spent in Gijon will be much more relaxed than signings, speeches, appearances might be in Madrid or Barcelona.

I can confirm we'll be in Barcelona on July 19th. Our wonderful hosts have gotten us tickets to see Bruce Springsteen and the E street Band that evening. (It's the day after my birthday, and what a magnificent present! I look forawrd to seeing just how hard Barcelona can rock, and roll, when given a chance to see one of the best bands in the world perform in their hometown).

We are trying to get various dates confirmed as soon as possible, since so many other plans are on hold until we know how long we'll be in Spain and where we'll be going while there.

Check the websites of the publishers and major book stores that are specialist SF/F and you might be able to find more information there as the trip nears. George will put up abbreviated information on his web site. The best place for better and more detailed information is most likely from Gigamesh. Contacting them might get you information, and might nudge them to push to get the schedule completed soon.

hope we'll get a chance to meet you while visiting Spain.

Quick update:

plans for various parts of the trip are beginning to come together, dates for signing and other events are beginning to be booked, our trusty travel agent is about to get the raw data and dates and make a journey that will be planned to work smoothly and smartly.

Keep checking George's news, and appearances pages on his website over the next few weeks, when he can confirm events, he'll put them up there. If you live in Spain or Portugal or have plans to travel there, you may want to contact the local bookstores/libraries/SF associations as well as George's Spanish/Portuguese publishers and see if they announce any event specific to a city or location.

More when we have some confirmations about various events our multiple hosts are organizing.

Hi,

First of all, sorry for my poor English.

I'm Jon Nieve, webmaster of Asshai.com

How many board's members  will come to Spain during Martin's visit? It would be nice to have a meeting :grouphug: and drink some beers... or "sangrias" with them. :D
