A little sexy perhaps, but certainly capable of being a bit unscrupulous. Besides brains are hot and Littlefinger may be many things but he's no dummy.

I was watching A Name of the Rose and I saw Varys. :)

Michael Habeck played Berengar. I don't know if he's the guy to play the Spider now, but his character in NotR, aside from the physical characteristics, has the perfect oiliness to him.

Berengar is a good reference model for the producers.

Wow, I think he would make an awesome Tywin. I wonder if he's been suggested for that yet.

i really like this, might be a bit old though. If not him, Tim Curry. Tim Curry's quite old but I really like the idea. The eyebrows are so menacing when he smiles, he's british; compared to other suggestions i think his comedic/menacing ratio is just right, i think. n_n

My Top 3 for King Robert Baratheon are:

1. Aaron Douglas - This guy is one of my favorite actors in Battlestar Galactica. When he gained some weight and a beard, he was the spitting image of Robert Baratheon. I'm surprised nobody's suggested him yet.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0234928/

2. Abraham Benrubi - He was awesome in Dark Angel and Parker Lewis Can't Lose. He definitely has the height.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0072344/

3. Bob Stephenson - I really enjoyed his performance in Jericho and thought he held his own. He would bring the jovial moods of the King for sure. My only concern is he may be a little old for the part.

John Simm would be great as Littlefinger

On IMDB

It's his role in State of play that made me think of him, he's great at playing manipulators looking like saints.

Varys is a key figure.

I would rather he not be too fat or gay. He puts on an effeminate persona in public, but the actor must also play the private Varys, who has little nonsense about him.

I would suggest Stephen Fry, though he may be a little tall for the part.

Aiden Gillen

Brillant in HBO's The Wire and really looks the part of Petyr.
YES! Wow that guy would be perfect!

For the part of Hodor, I would humbly like to suggest former Washington Bullets center Gheorge Muresan:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0613837/

You may remember him acting circles around Billy Crystal in My Giant.

Seriously, could it be anyone else?

Illyn Payne. This guy has the most frightening stare I have ever seen, and if you have ever seen Always Sunny in Philladelphia then you knew he is one scary dude.

Gregory Scott Cummins

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0192003/

if not Illyn, he needs to be somewhere in the series.
I'm not sure if anyone suggested this or not...

I know it wouldn't happen because of his prior commitments, but Michael Emerson (Ben from LOST) would make the absolute best Varys.
This is scary. I just came back to this thread in order to suggest him. I started re-watching Lost recently, and suddenly realised that this guy would make a great Varys. So nice to see that someone else thinks so too.

Edited to add an IMDB link in case someone hasn't watched Lost... Michael Emerson

Same, I think it's the eyes and cadaver-like long face.

Three actors that could fill any number of roles in this series. Peter Wingfield http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0935057/ , Adrian Paul http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001600/ , and Richard Ridings http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0725956/ .

watching that Will Ferrel Bush special on HBO tonight (which, wasn't really funny, but that's not the point...) opened my eyes to something right in front of us this entire time...

Varys exists in real life. In looks and form...as Karl Rove.

Do it, HBO!!!

I think it's likely more about the reasons we'd pick certain people rather than the people themselves, so I'll at least give a super-brief bit of an overview of the why and hope that these are relatively new :o

Varys- Needs someone fun, yet secretive. Important to what happens, but inconsequential to the thoughts of those in power.

Jeffrey Combs http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001062/

the Emerson suggestion was excellent as well though

Pycelle- Ian McKellan would be my first thought (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005212/), but much too pricey I'd have to guess.

Luckily there is no shortage of other options of whom I'd put Ned Beatty towards the top if he's available http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000885/

The Bill Nighy suggestion was spot on too though, guess it depends on what you want to get across, as I can think of a couple others that'd work as well and each would emphasize a different character trait that he shows throughout the series...

Stannis- Someone with gravitas more than the other 2 brothers as he'll be carrying some scenes alone in the upcoming books as well as in a group. Of course, he also must give off an appropriate hard-ass vibe as well.

Bill Campbell http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001004/

Ser Barristan Selmy- Another gravitas/hard-ass role that I'd give the first pick nod to

Michael Hogan http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0389581/

Although his stock has likely gone flying into the stratosphere lately, that's the type of actor to look for at least
