I wouldn't mind this one either.
I could see Gillian Anderson as Catelyn--and not for the red hair. She's proven herself to be an actress of incredible depth in both Bleak House (some of her scenes were gut wrenching!) and The House of Mirth (or, as I like to call it: House of PAIN!).

And Sean Bean would be a good Ned too. I don't agree that he's "a big star" at all. Can you name anything he's done that brought out the crowds since LOTR? He's such a wonderful actor but I don't think he's ever been considered A-List or mainstream. That's part of his appeal.

I agree that Bean (and other established stars mentioned in the threads) is not an A-List superstar celeb who gets splashed on the covers of the gossip rags that you see while standing in line at the supermarket, but he's pretty recognizable now after LOTR. He's an example of what most people here consider a big star. It's all relative.

On November 11th, it was announced that Kevin McKidd was joining Grey's Anatomy as a regular. So, he may be out of the running, though there's a mention of the show having a bit of a "revolving door" when it comes to regulars, so who knows?
As others have mentioned culling Rome for actors, I have to go with Kevin McKidd for Ned.

For starters, he's Scottish, and we all know Starks are Scots, right?

Secondly, he's got that sombre, consciensce ridden thing down pat.

Howver, looks like he might be all booked up with House at the moment.
I watch House and dont remember Mckidd being in it . Like Ran stated , he is doning Grey's. Maybe im confused.....

I still like Jack Davenport for Eddard. He looks like Eddard to me. He's about the right age, and his voice has the right tinge of sadness and resignation to it that feels right for Eddard.

And he's a dead-on match for Bryan Cranston as Rickard Stark in flashbacks.

Spot on!!! Too bad they don't look like my favorite for Lyanna Odette Yustman

I definetly have to agree with Odette for Lyanna. I'd never even heard of her but when someone posted her picture in another thread I immediately dropped all other ideas for this one. She's got my vote all the way.

As for the children - there's enough of them to go around these days. I just hope they remember to keep the characters as kids. I liked the idea for Rachel Hurd Wood to play Sansa, although I've not seen any of her acting yet, so I'll have to look into it. As for Arya, I think the girl from Pan's Labyrinth would do well (if she speaks english well enough)

For Catelyn, I favor the lady from CSI Vegas because she's got the poise and presence, but she might be out of the question with all the shooting for CSI.

Odette Yustman as Lyanna. Great suggestion. I second, third or whatever the count is.

What do everyone think of Avan Jogia for Jon Stark.
He has Scifi on his resume and looks just right, except for a slightly to dark skincolour perhaps.

A fun fact is that he has already played a character called Ben Stark.
(Coincidence, hidden tribute or subliminal casting suggestion?)

Been looking around to find Ned.
It's not an easy call. 30 something actors these days oddly look 20 something.

anyway I guess I put this name forth

They aren't going to keep kids as kids, except for perhaps Arya and Bran. I'd like Max Pirkis(?) as Jon - IIRC he is 18-20 and with Octavian he proved that he still can act (many kid actors lose the talent as they age). IMHO, for the Stark kids with the big roles, like Jon, ability to act and relatively young age trumps the "type" all the way.

But the most difficult role to cast will be Arya, IMHO. She needs to be young (no more than 16, IMHO), she needs to a believably pass for a boy, she needs to look natural as a fighter _and_ she needs to be able to act really well, because her role is so mutable. They probably need to look for an unknown there.

Re: British-based young actors, I'd look at the guy who plays Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films. Sure, his current role is very shallow and formulaic, but he used to be able to act when he was younger. Maybe that's still the case. I've seen him suggested for Joffrey, but that's nothing but typecasting. If he still can act, he may fit roles of Jon or Robb better, IMHO.

Oh, and:
You walk a dangerous road when you deliberately go out to cast less than attractive actors for major parts. If people don't like the look of an actor, they may tune out. Lots of film version of characters end up being prettier than they were characterized.
I really feel that this is a very bad tendency that results in so many US produced movies and series being utter garbage. People who are not conventionally beautiful, but really talented can still be very charming and enticing on the screen. And BTW, quite a few big Holywood _male_ actors aren't in fact conventionally pretty.
The women are hit full-tilt, though. Which is why big-name actresses are rarely very good. Not to mention that scarcely do they reach 40 as they find themselves out on the garbage dump, while their grizzled male collegues continue to star until the grave, paired with succession of much younger actresses. End rant.

There are also plenty of good-looking (conventionally or otherwise) actors who are charming and enticing. Talent and good looks aren't necessarily exlusive. The leads don't need to be underwear models (a few characters excepted) but I feel some amount of physical appeal is necessary to attract viewers.

Might be way too expensive now and/or way too 'hot' (meaning he probably has scripts tossed to him left and right atm), but:

Josh Brolin as Ned Stark
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000982/

Not your typical Hollywood good looks, but someone who looks like he's seen war and has the weight of the world on his shoulders.

I'd love to see him paired up again with my current Catelyn favorite Kelly Macdonald. They played husband and wife in 'No Country for Old Men'
