pinksand
Do Stannis and Tywin strike anyone else as being kind of the same character? Both are stern, humorless, pragmatic, battle hardened types who vie for the throne and have a tenuous relationship with their child(ren). I'd be really interested in other people's opinions on this. The Roaring Bear
Theres tons of characters that are the sameIlyrio Mopatis and Xaro xhoan DaxosStannis, Tywin and Randyll TarlyLittlefinger and VarysThe list goes on, but its funnier if you read it here:http://www.cracked.c...rones-universe/ (Though this mostly references the tv series). SerMattOfTennessee
Tywin plays the game for power. Stannis is not so much interested in playing the game, he just wants what he thinks is his.
Lord Barristan
Stannis is hilarious. He has a dry sense of humor... Sure he doesn't laugh outloud but his sarcasm has me dying sometimes...
Lothar Imbel
Stannis does have a sense of humour, it's just so deapan and sarcastic that no one really notices. Stannis probably just thinks he's being honest.
Steelers7127
Tywin has no heart, i believe Stannis does.
Rockroi
I think they both exhibit similar personality traits that are necessary for men in charge. Stannis is less mean about it.
Lord Yarwyck
Tywin was an excellent ruler. Stannis was a pretty poor one. Their humorlessness is pretty much the only trait they share. Tywin is pragmatic and has a flexible definition of honour, whereas Stannis believes in honour above all else.
Ramez012
I think the major difference comes honor wise. Stannis is an honest and just man while Tywin is a bit of hypocrite (see incident at the end of SoS).
silvermug
They are motivated by different things. Tywin doesn't want to be an underdog, not for himself though, but for his house, for his family. Stannis just follows the law, what is right. Well, except during Robert's Rebellion, hehe.
pinksand
Interesting interpretations. Liked the Cracked article too. Thanks!
cortchuzska
Not at all, IMHO.Lord Tywin is much more "Fuck the rules, shit on honor, as long as I get the job done" (and that's why he is a better ruler)while Stannis is totally by the books, almost lawfully stupid ;he is worst than Lord Stark regarding honor; he is literal about it
ckal
In terms of being a bad ass and being serious all the time, then yeah.
justashadow
I think they are similar in thier leadership abilities.Tywin is power player/control freak, moreover, he needs to control everything. His justice is fear and obedience.Stannis has a little more integrity, imo. He believes in justice at a price, ie, he didn't like Ned Stark but didn't believe that agree that he should have been beheaded. His justice is more of a lesson of honour ie, Davos' fingers. donotmesswitharya
If anything I feel that Craster and Walder Frey are really similar as well. theyre both slimy old me who have no loyalty and who rule their own house with an iron fist
Vandalism
Tywin = Bad-ass over lord seeking the highest seat of power for his House and is willing to do anything for it. A machine for the progress of House Lannister, not caring whether what he is doing is good or evil and not making an extra effort towards either unless it brings him power. Brilliant military and political leader.Stannis = Bad-ass overlord seeking only what is his by right. Cares a lot about honour and is quite prickly about it. Has an iron view of justice, while Tywin would probably only care for justice if it brought him power. Brilliant military and political leader, and a more morally healthy person than Tywin. Crown
I disagree. Basically because Stannis is my asoiaf-hero, and Tywin isn't.
NorthernBird
Yes, there are some characters that are similar. With so many, it's almost inevitable. It doesn't take away from the enjoyment, for me.
The Drunkard
They have a similar nature, but very different motives. Tywin does everything to advance his House and ensure that people respect and fear the Lannisters, Stannis does what he does to ensure justice. And, they are slightly different. Stannis has a very dry sense of humour that is often overlooked, Tywin doesn't seem to have one. Stannis cares quite a bit about his family in his own weird way, Tywin doesn't seem to.
