repbypop
Who are the commanders who are known to fight on the battlefield, and are perceived by others as good fighters ?We can already pick some we know for sure they are good fighter like Robert, Ned, Stannis, Gregor, Jamie.but what about , Renly, Tywin, Randyl, Robb, Aegon the conqueror, Visenya, Nymeria, Kevan, and others ? And to be fair some are just unable to fight like Tyrion and Dany but they can be on the on the battlefield to boost morale troops. Do you think commanders should fight on the battlefield with their troops or should they stay away from the battle observing it from a better distance to give orders and watch the enemy movements. Barty
Ned comes under the category of competent fighters but not in the same league as Jaime, Robert, Gregor etc. Stannis does not fight - he leads from the rear like Tywin and Kevan.Jaime is a good example of a leader who commands and fights from the front and so is Robert and Randyll Tarly - all are very dangerous fighters(IMO).Renly never fought a battle so he cannot be counted.Robb led from the front and was probably a decent fighter but again nowhere near the elite just like his father. repbypop
I had the impression that Stannis was a competent fighter always in front of his men in battle. That how they portrayed him in the tv version.
Howling Mad
Actually GRRM stated in the SSM that Ned is a better battle commander than a fighter.
mrunderhill
Garlan and Loras lead from the front as well.Nymeria was not a warrior.
PrinceHenryris
Even though he liked to command the reserve, Tywin was probably a good commander.
Fauch
Commanding from the rear is what every competent battle commander would do, because you actually have a overview of the battlefield. If you engage yourself and fight from the front you lack any information of the battlefield, and what's actually going on.

Crannogman Pride
Robb and Grey Wind were a devastating team. I bet they were a huge asset in the front. Same goes for Jaime, Robert, and Randyll Tarly. These guys change the battle by killing dozens of men and by changing morale. And the front is pretty much the only place for Gregor.
JeepCSC
Hmm, well Jaime seemed easily provoked, which is fine in one-on-one but less good as a commander. Robb seemed to have inherited his father's gifts as a commander.

So a healthy balance needs to be made. Sometimes you fight from the front and sometimes from the rear@topic Tywin, Ned, robert, kevan were good commanders. Your commander dying is a huge blow to your cause. Of course Robb and Jaime are heavily protected by plot armour :cool4:

Michael Stark Thenextwolf
Do we actually know if Tarly does fight in the front lines? I could be wrong but i dont remember reading if he does or not.
Silent_Hero
Commander/Fighter doesn't mean Politic.I couldn't help it! I was so set up for it! But it is wise to note Robb didn't entirely face Tywin, I would have loved to see that.

Which books are your reading - the plot goes out of the way to make life difficult for Robb and eventually kills him. There are huge plot holes which are created by GRRM for the sole purpose of defeating the North.

An older gentleman, fighting a young lad of 15-16 with a big ass direwolf. Big ass direwolf bits older gentleman, young lad kills him, ...?, profit. There are huge plot holes which are created by GRRM for the sole purpose of defeating the North. He has plot armor as in that he wasn't going to get killed in a battle by a common soldier, just as Jaime. Imagine if we learnt that during the battle of Riverrun, Robb was killed by two common men-at-arms. It's not going to happen. In real life, the chance of you dying if you lead from the front is certainly higher than if you lead from the rear.
