What if Stannis had stayed loyal to the Targs?

I was re-listening to book three on audible and something stood out to me... Stannis told Davos It was a hard choice when he chose to follow Robert in his rebellion. Now imagine...what if Stannis had stayed loyal to the Targs? We know that at least three stormland houses...Fell, Grandison and Cafferen stayed loyal to the Targs...what if they had a Baratheon to follow? How many houses across the kingdoms would have second thoughts about Robert if even his own brother wont take him for a King?

The war could go drastically different, but the Stormlords would still be very divided, as Stannis was not near as well liked as good ole Robert. If Stannis had him imprisoned however, there would likely be infighting against such a coup with many still loyal to Robert.

Would have been very bad to say the least, considering Stannis was a solid commander during the war. Most other folks wouldn't have been able to withstand so long a siege.

The Stormlands would be more divided-they are sworn to their Lord Robert and his House, but if even their lord's heir/brother wouldn't follow, then that's a bad sign.

Most likely, what would happen is more Stormlords would side with Aerys, and Robert would also have to take Storm's End. This makes his Stormlands campaign much more difficult and longer, leaving him exposed. Imagine what would have happened if instead of the Trident, Dorne plus the Crownlands attacked Robert on either flank, and then attacked the Riverlands/Vale/North separately without their best commander/fighter

If Stannis could hold Storm´s End from pro-Robert lords then the Reach would probably join the loyalist army on the trident and Tywin would not have doubts aswell... the huge difference in numbers would be the end of the rebellion...

Again... IF STANNIS HOLDS THE PRO-ROBERT LORDS...

Robert wouldn't likely need to retake Storm's End, in how Stannis would be unlikely to turn the men of Storm's End against Robert until maybe after months of being besieged. If he had attempted to do at the beginning he would likely be thrown in cell by Robert's men.

Minsc,

Remember, that even though the men of Storm's End are loyal to their lords, Robert has been the Vale for the last several years. Stannis on the other was at Storms End. Who do you think they'll side with?

In this scenario, Lord Tyrell doesn't besiege Storm's End since its held by a Targ-loyalist, Stannis.

Robert, aka their lord and charismatic one that people actually like. Moreover, IIRC Robert was longer being fostered at that time thus he still had a presence at SE.

Robert places Stannis in the dungeons for the rest of the war. It's very likley that the guy in charge of holding Storm's End won't be as unyielding as Stannis, so they'd surrender to Highgarden.

Stannis supporting Aerys would've been an incredibly stupid choice on his part.

Things go worse for Robert. The extent of which is unclear.

What is important to remember is that there a relatively strong Loyalist movement (Grandison, Fell, Cafferen, Connington).

Robert is the Lord of Storm's End and has been back to the Stormlands in this time. But doesn't have his reputation for fighting and commanding yet.

It really depends on who Stannis can win over and how the Loyalists do against Robert and his backers.

Worst Case Scenario - Stannis pulls a coup and kills/captures Robert, leading loyalist Stormlands against the North, Vale and possibly the Riverlands depending on how Hoster decides. Mace Tyrell is freed up from besieging SE and Tywin may even back the Royal family with their apparent superiority. Rebellion curb stomped.

Best Case Scenario - Everything plays out like normal Summerhill etc, but Robert doesn't have someone to hold Storm's End. He loses Storm's End. Tyrells are freed up to fight at the Trident. Rebels may still win or Rhaegar might win the day.
