the sandship
Hello Everybody, I'm sort of new to the forum and I am helping a friend out with her task for school, she has chosen for her subjet : The similairities between the Roman Gods and all the Gods of the A song of Ice And Fire series, I am speaking of the Old gods, of the faith of the seven, of R'hllor and of all the other deities. This is what she has so far : The romans have gods for all the aspect of life, like war, death, fertility, wisdom, crafting, ... and the faith of the Seven has all those thing to : they have the warrior ( war ) , the stranger ( death ), the maiden ( fertility ), the father ( wisdom ), the smith ( craftmanship ) We would really appreciate it if you guys could help us out :) Thanks in advance
polishgenius
I'll be honest, I think she needs to pick a different theme, because I really can't see more than the most basic similarities that would apply to all mythical pantheons. In part because we know very little about the aSoIaF gods.
Larry of the Lawn
Agree in spirit with the ursa polish, though if its a long enough program maybe the requisite source material will be completed? Great idea for whrn the series is done, but then life is such a concatenation of timing and opportunity.
OnionAhaiReborn
Of the gods in ASoIaF, the Seven come closest to comparing to the Roman gods. IIRC the Seven are held to be different aspects of one god, which is similar to the way different aspects of Jupiter were delineated and picked out for particular worship, I believe even to the point of having separate temples emphasizing certain aspects, though I could be mistaken about that. Jo498
I am way out of my depth but I think the idea of diverse Gods as aspects of one Deity (or whatever) is more prominent in several Hindu traditions than in the Greco-Roman pantheon. This applies to the "Seven" mainly. I do not think the "Old Gods" and R'llhor (or other Essos deities) are sufficiently developed in the books to allow meaningful comparisons. TheSovereignGrave
The Old Gods are far closer to shamanism and animism, and R'hllor is a monotheistic religion with a very dualistic world-view similar to Zoroastrianism. As far as I know, the comparison you gave is really the only one there is. It doesn't help that the Seven aren't individual Gods.
James Arryn
Not too much, tbh. Among other things, but very central; people in Westeros expect the Gods to be interested in them in a kind of benevolent way. Greco-Romans mostly hoped that the Gods weren't pissed at them. If they wanted comfort they tended to go outside the classic pantheon, which was fine as all gods were welcome.
