  1. Like everyone, I struggled through the beginning (new characters I didn't particularly care about because they didn't get as emotional an introduction as Maneo, Fillip, Prax, etc.; and not really knowing what the primary goal for most characters was from the beginning) ... but once it got going, it was really amazing. I loved the ending a lot. But I also felt really sad for Amos. Everyone he knows eventually dies.

The one complaint I had was that I was really hoping for a Fillip chapter (keeping fingers crossed that one of the novellas/short stories will address this). And maybe a Prax chapter to kind of tell us how the inner planets (relative to the gates) experienced this whole thing, the same way Amos gave us insight after the Free Navy attacked Earth.

I can't believe I have to wait for March to get the complete short story/novella compilation. :(

  2. Bittersweet for sure. Unless they try to be (extra) edgy next year by giving it to him anyway (crossing my fingers).

Just saw on twitter Abdulrazak Gurnah has sold only 3000 copies of his books worldwide, combined.* The Swedish Academy is sketchy for sure, but I can't say I'm not also really happy about this one.

*of course one has to take into account the accuracy of twitter claims.

I’m not unhappy with the choice, just kind of underwhelmed by it. This probably is mostly a product of my preference for prose. I’ve read several of Glück’s poems today, and they are indeed beautiful, but I’m just a novel kind of guy. That being said, this is the Academy’s corrective for the Dylan selection, and that bums me out. It means, as I said above, that DeLillo will never win (nor Pynchon, but that was a long shot anyway).

I think this is what irks me about the selection, it does seem that the Academy was trying to correct the error with Dylan. And I say this without trying to take anything away from Glück; but I'd have preferred if she perhaps won it in Dylan's year, and the Academy could have then made its way to rewarding someone on the perennial bridesmaid list. I'm honestly personally tired of constantly hoping Ngugi Wa Thiong'o will bring it home.

PS: also kind of unhappy an organisations was picked for Peace. Personally not a fan of organisations getting awards and stuff, especially the Peace one.

  4. Regarding the name: probabaly what @A Horse Named Stranger said. Names are important to people; we see it even more recently with more people insisting on their names being spelled and pronounced correctly (this is a thing in South Africa). I'd also insist, whether or not Americans would pronounce it correctly, I'd even go as far as putting the umlaut with a pen/pencil on printouts that didn't have it, when I could.

At the beginning of the year I won a contest and was selected alongside other 52 writers to write for an online magazine. I hate promoting it, but here it seemed appropriate. It's in Spanish tho, so I assume most people won't be able to read it. Also, I have to write a short story every week, which means that some are not good, but some I think are. Anyhow, give it a read if you like/can.

Congratulations. And thanks for sharing. FYI, the link gave me an English option.

    Not exactly on call.

But we never officially parted ways in the meantime, so I figure he will want to look at the manuscript when it's done.

    Hopefully!

    This is some legendary stuff.

I just came here to say I love everyone on here. Good luck with everything. No, I'm not high or drunk.

Io has a huge amount of energy production facilities on it, which Earthforce uses to fuel its entire fleet. That's why there's a big colony there (built under a massively radiation-shielded dome in an area of the moon that's tectonically stable). The colony is also on the far side of the moon to Jupiter (Io is tidally locked to the planet). It's a little bit of a stretch but nothing too bad.

Thanks. Funny thing, soon as I read this reply and therefore became less bothered by it, they stopped mentioning it.

I made the mistake of marathoning through the show. Now I'm on S5E1, but I feel like there's a lot of information I didn't properly process. I blame the show because every episode just made me want to watch the next one really badly :D. I'm going to pace myself now, mostly because I'm running out of episodes and I've become rather attached. Can't believe I'm only watching this in 2017.

    Also,

    Spoiler

I'm not over Kosh's death. I keep hoping he'll come back, even though the First Ones are now all gone anyway.

  8. I just found out Kosh

    Spoiler

has wings; or over millenia, the Vorlons conditioned other races to see them as angel-like beings. Either way, I'm not quite sure how to deal with the sheer awesomeness of it.

I really like the show. I just have one major issue: I'm no astrophysicist so I could be completely wrong on this--it really bothers me that Io is apparently a stable Earth colony. Isn't that moon so small and so close to the much larger Jupiter such that the proximity is essentially turning the moon inside-out through volcanic eruptions? Every time someone mentions the Io colony I'm kind of bothered. But like I said, I don't have the scientific knowledge to back this.

That is the case, if I'm not mistaken. It also depends on the device (with Apple products having access in more areas than Android products, IIRC). At least, that's how I experienced it before.last year, though, it became available for me, so perhaps availability will be enhanced again, soon? You can always hope..

Thanks. Sadly, mine is an android device. But thanks anyway.

  10. Is it possible to format the posts similarly to the contents page i.e. two adjacent posts cannot have the same background colour, my background can be light grey and the next guy's can be white. The contents page looks much better than the threads.

  11. Regarding the skin, there is no way to make this board look like the old board, the software was completely rewritten and the skin that the forum maker provides is much too different.

I do agree that the posts seem to float together  a bit, so I will need to see if I can find anything in the skin to fix that.

    Thanks.
