Ruby Chevrolet
Littlefinger challenged Brandon Stark to a duel after Brandon was betrothed to Catelyn Tully. Without even asking Catelyn if she wanted him to do it.At almost the exact same moment, Rhaegar was sneaking off with Lyanna, who was betrothed to Robert. Why didn't Rhaegar just do what Littlefinger did? Was he afraid of Robert?
CosimaistheHottest
Because Rhaegar was already married. I doubt anyone would really take the duel seriously. Rickard could have easily been horrified that prince or not this already married man with two children wanted his daughter. What if he did challenge him? What if Robert wins this time too? People will be pissed that Robert killed the Prince or injured him permanently and Aerys would have probably killed Robert.
Fat Mac
Well, Rhaegar seemed confident enough that he would beat Robert at the Trident (he would never have, though). Whatever Rhaegar's plan was, I think he wanted it to be secret. If he fought for Lyanna's hand, no matter if he won or not, too many eyes would be staring at him. This makes me think Rhaegar was a bit of a coward.
Raven in Winter
I wonder if the thought would have even crossed his mind? He might have thought "Hey! I'm the Crown Prince! I do what I want!"
Djinn
He went into hiding because knew that Robert or Brandon or Oberyn would finish him in a duel. He was the Loras of his day.
Caggo Corpsekiller
Wasnt Robert like 6'5 or 6'6 of solid muscle in his heydey? I wouldnt want to challenge that to a duel

Ramsay Gimp
Without knowing the full story, I would say because he had that Targaryen rashness that made him just do what he wanted and damn the consequences. The Baratheons probably inherited this trait from the Targs, since they started out as a bastard branch.
Ruby Chevrolet
Look upon the Battle of the Tridant and see curious mind quenched. It's one thing to fight a duel one on one. It's another to mobilize armies to kill each other around you while you fight said duel.

BitsOfBrains
Because if he had dueled for her he would have had to keep her in some official capacity. He just wanted some rape victim locked up in his proverbial basement, not a bunch of hassles and hammer to the skull.
MelanisticMelisandre
Like others have said, he was already married. I'd love to see Robert in his prime, absolutely destroying Rhaegar in a duel :P
Kienn
Because Rhaegar wanted a secret son of mixed descent to grow up as a bastard and take the Black. He didn't want a legitimate son to become King on the Iron Throne. Basically his plan worked perfectly.

Blutraven
This is the same person who thought running off with the daughter of one of the 8 most powerful men in the country, who's betrothed to one of the other 8 most powerful men in the country, who's brother is betrothed to marry the daughter of one of the other 8 most powerful men in the country. Thinking things through doesn't seem to be Rhaegar's strong point.
