Northernmonkey
Would these books been as successful as they are now? I guess conceivably it could be done in the modern world as a sort of sci-fi in a dystopian semi-futuristic world. The land beyond the wall could be a post-nuclear fall out zone with the others some sort of mutants. But no, it wouldn't be anywhere near as good. Part of why the books are so good is that it's recognisably based on medieval history with elements of real folklore in there.
koki
Well, the vast majority of characters would be in prison for life.
WeaselPie
If the modern world had magic and dragons, sure. ETA I agree with the dystopian elements stated by northernmonkey as being essential to setting this story in the modern world. Along with magic and dragons. Mad Monkey
Honestly, not much would change. Ned wouldn't be able to resign as Hand of the King because he needs the job to keep his health insurance coverage to pay for Bran's hospital bills. Robert would die from a DUI instead of a hunting accident. Instead of Catelyn taking Tyrion to the Vale to face Lysa Arryn, she would haul him up in front of Judge Judy. When Joffrey attacks Mycah and Arya, he would get busted by Ned Stark's guards but escape incarceration because he suffered from 'affluenza'. The Wall would come down not because of prophecy or blood magic but because royal sequestration budget cuts led to the Watch being defunded. Back on topic literally just switch everything to the mafia and it still works amazing.
