Casting for Randyll Tarly

The King Of Cooked Steak

My vote here goes to the classic, Clancy Brown.

He has the HBO connection as he was on Carnivale as the preacher turned demon, Brother Justin. He showed off a lot of subtleties in this role but this is an actor that can pull off a huge animated performance just as well as anyone. He has truly amazing range. Of course, he also has experience swinging a sword and he is sort of the original sword swinger as the villain in the Original Highlander film, the Kurgan. Another actor with a great voice too.

He has a presence on the screen a lot like Charles Dance does. It just commands you. Listen to that voice, he has two words in this small scene from Carnivale but his presence and voice just command attention from an audience. Clancy Brown would instantly bring the respect that would be needed on screen to a legendary warrior character like Randyll Tarly. GOT would spend so much less screen time having to establish that respect the way they would with a newbie actor.

And of course, during his younger years with a sword, what can I say, the first film is an underground classic and he was great in it

If a classic fantasy actor like Clancy Brown swings the Tarly Valyrian Steel Ancestral Blade, Heartsbane, in any battle scene next season then I think the heads of millions of fantasy geeks all over the world will collectively explode.

Besides, what better excuse to tell people for not being able to live up to your father than "Well, you see, my dad is...sort of...you know, the Kurgan..." Dragonglass and Valyrian Steel may kill White Walkers, but the Kurgan eats White Walkers and Dragons for breakfast!

Now, if only GOT can somehow add Queen to the soundtrack.

Oh yeah, I can see him scaring young Sam.

I always pictured Timothy V. Murphy as Randyll

Ooh or him.

Funny enough I think Stephen Dillane himself looks more like how I imagined Tarly appearance wise than Stannis.

Or Mark Strong, I always pictured STannis as Mark Strong, but not now, but I reckon he'd be good as Randall.

I think the threat of violence at any time needs to be there, and the actor should be physically, vocally and aesthetically intimidating. I never would have thought of him on my own but Tim McInnerny would be spot on.

Still banging the drum for Brendan Gleeson.

I want Brendan Gleeson for Wyman Manderly

And I need Graham McTavish as Randyll, saw him at Armageddon here in NZ and he gave off a pretty intimidating vibe although he did seem like a nice guy.

I've never been a huge fan of McTarvish. I don't think he is a bad actor but I would never single him out as being particularly very talented? He reminds me of Ben Kingsley with muscles and half the talent. Again, no offense to McTarvish but the guy he happens to look like is a very, very talented actor.

Gleeson would be a great Manderly in one sense as he's a very likable presence, but personally I'd prefer to have someone who would seem less likable initially while we're assuming that he's loyal to the Boltons and the Lannisters - someone who can seem fawning or weak-willed - in order to make the revelation of his Stark loyalism all the more surprising.

For me, the ideal actor would be Timothy Spall. He's very good at villains and otherwise-unlikable characters (Peter Pettigrew, Turner), but he's also someone who people really warm to in the right role. Also, he looks like a walrus.

Before Season 5 I'd have said that he's too big an actor for a side character, but from what I saw of Season 5 (the first six episodes - I couldn't stomach the rest) High Sparrow didn't get much screen time, and Jonathan Pryce is a very successful, well-known actor.

Randyll has to look a bit like he could be the father of the actor who plays Sam though. He also has to be someone you can think of as a fighter. There has to be a very martial an military aspect to him. Brendan Gleeson fits all of those perfectly. He played a warrior in Braveheart and a general in Edge of Tomorrow. He can play intimidating people and smart people.

If not him then Tom Wilkinson.
