Stannis started out as a bitter and dispossessed man with no friends, believing that all he needed to rule was an army. As the story has went on and he's befriended the northmen, not only is he gaining popularity but also getting a feel for the other side of the game, the politics of it all. It would be ironic if the man who inspired no love or loyalty ends up getting so much love and loyalty from so much of Westeros that is becomes the one thing that makes him a force to reckon with even for dragons.
