Stannis Baratheon vs Randyll Tarly

it's good to remind ourselves randyll beat robert because of mace's army closing in, home advantage and fighting the remnants of summerhall... Robert is superior on land, not much because Tarly proved on BW he is a great himself... to awnser the op, stannis is a more complete commander and randyll a more complete warrior/general imo... so, equal conditions on 1v1 tarly, on a war scenario stannis

And why did Robert find himself in enemy territory? Either Randyll outmaneuvered him or Robert was stupid enough to think he could take on the Reach.

On land Tarly - he beat Robert and I can't recall a battle he has lost

On water Stannis - crushed Victarion and the IB, why in the world did he not lead the water assault on Kingslanding?

Because it's generally better for your commander to be with the bulk of the troops where he can easily give commands on the fly and where he can at least sort of join in on the fight as a morale boost rather being in a ship where it looks like he can turn and run whenever he wants (especially given how his army wasn't all that loyal to him)

I'm going with Stannis just because he's had more recent practice. Our last glimpse of Stannis has him preparing for yet another battle. Our last word on Tarly is that he's guarding Margaery. A man can get rusty just sitting around guarding queens.

It's not like he's been doing that for ages he was in a battle in Storm and since then was dealing with outlaws and then in a stand off with the Faith. That sort of stuff keeps you on your toes. Its not like he's just been lounging around in the sun.

Robert was overconfident going so far west with the remnants of 3 battles... only a commander as good as him could win the Reach with that, it was a bite in his own ass because Tarly managed to hold until Mace was close enough to pose a threat and force a retreat... and i've said Randyll is a great commander himself (blackwatter, etc), just not as good as Robert in equal conditions on land IMO

Robert at Ashford was Napoleon on his Russian campaign... and Tarly forced his retreat, good for him, few could have done it, even with terrain, numbers and troop's health advantage...
