Did D&D have initially a more even battle planned

And just decided based on time constraint - that it should just be massacre, and focus on the drama concerning that?

If they had this one sided massacre planned all along - why waste budget on the Golden company at all? They lasted literally one second.

The Golden Company was for the viewer suspension of disbelief.  That combined with Rhaegal dying made it seem as though this match-up could be even.  It actually has some decent parallels to the sacking of Kinsglanding by the Lannisters during Robert's Rebellion

Correct. The Golden Company was never going to be formidable in the Ds plan. They were always going to be cannon fodder and Harry Strickland was nothing more than a patsy.

Considering that they would be the ones that put the time constraints on themselves, I don't think this is the case. They just wanted us to think going into this it was going to be an even battle. Add more "suspense."

Let's just say the 1,999 Golden Company Cavalry and 1/2 to 2/3 of the infantry caught a sudden case of Flee-to-Essos-itis before the battle. Similar to how the ~80,000+ men of the Reach caught stay-at-home-itis.

I think that the dragon is a metaphor for nuclear weapon. If the person with the finger on the button goes crazy or has a low blood sugar moment because of a few missed Big Macs, the results will be absolutely devastating for the target.
