The aesthetic of the OT is often described as 'lived in', and usually its referring to the rust on the ships, but I think it's more than that, you actually get the sense that the world is still continuing off screen. 

It was also actors interacting with actual physical objects, be it nature or otherwise. It might feel dated in some way, but at least you knew you were looking at a real place made by people, not something rendered by a computer, whose effects will always be limited by the technology of the time.
