Anime IV - new SUMMER animu and guff

It's a Gainax show (well, at least, the same team, let's say it's Gainax for the sake of the point), of course it's all about fanservice.

They even invented the term fanservice.

But it's about true fanservice, literally. Not only the sexual connotation it has now.

Not quite sure I follow the distinction between them, could you elaborate?

Gave Walkure Romanze episode a try today and was all about the premise of a jousting academy until the fanservice kicked in. At least the pervert is a horse this time I guess? Harem too, meh. I'll give it a few more but my hopes are not high.

Well, Gainax has a long history of shows made by otaku for otaku.

They started with Gunbuster, which has the whole "Gainax boobs" thing for example. It's amazing how the boobs are animated in Gunbuster, a typically old-school feel, you don't see that now anymore.

But it isn't only about sexual themes. Their shows are made to please the fan. In all aspects. Epicness, gar characters, all sorts of tropes... Not just boobs.

They target the child (and/or the teenager when it's about sexuality) in us. Gurren Lagann is the perfect example, and Kill la Kill is his heir.

And I don't mind this kind of fanservice. Those shows are made for fans (i.e fanservice). But a sane oldschool otaku fanbase.

Not the other otaku fanbase. You know, the disgusting one. The pedomoelolishit stuff. The stuff that sells in Japan*, and that all studios are forced to do in order to survive. Gainax is doing that too. But Trigger is resuscitating the true Gainax spirit with Kill la Kill.

* In Japan, it's the niche market of moe that sustains the anime industry. Studios are forced to direct their works toward that niche market to ensure profit.

..'splainin..

I hadn't considered the other tropes to be fanservice and thought it was an entirely sexual thing, definitely see what you mean now though.

Also understood with the niche market stuff, I am aware of it but try to ignore it the best I can. Not knowing what the hell moe means is how I keep my sanity and I am not asking for a definition.

Jesus Christ there's a lot of shows this season.

Most of them crap, naturally, but still. (Jousting harem? Drama that's underwater for some reason? Idol as pro-wrestler? WTF?)

Going to have to do some hardcore pruning I expect.

Valvrave is back, and just as over-the-top as usual. (what else can be said about a high school mecha vampire show?)

This does seem to be the season of the knockoffs, we have a knockoff of Hataraku Maou-sama, and then one of Sword Art Online.

i think log horizon will be different enough, or at least better than SoA season 2.

Maou knockoff has the potential the fantasy universe brings with it unlike where a demon is transported to our world. That's the only perk I can think of though.

Decided to check out a few of these.

Kill la Kill - I loved that it is over the top and ridiculous in tone and style and the animation is great, but the fanservice puts me off more than anything.

Samurai Flamenco - I had no interest in this until I found out that it was directed by Takahiro Omori. I love Baccano! and Durarara!!, so figured I should give it a chance. It was kind of boring. If I remember, I will watch the second episode when it drops to see if it picks up or interests me more, but I have a feeling this is going to be a slower building series and I don't want to deal with that via simulcast, so I will probably leave it for later. On the plus side, I really liked the music.

Gingitsune - I decided to watch this because it has superficial similarities to Red Data Girl, which I miss and very much want more of. The two are nothing alike, of course, but I did enjoy Gingitsune and look forward to watching more of it.

Nagi no Asukara - This is me just choosing one that doesn't sound horrible and then being mildly disappointed by my choice. It seems interesting and I might even be able to get into it, but there is very little to like about the main character, who spends most of his time yelling at everyone and bullying his friend, Manaka, who is apparently so weak that he makes it his personal duty to protect her. You know, by treating her like shit and occasionally showing remorse for it. From comments, he seems to get worse in the second episode so I don't think I will be watching much further.

I started Tokyo Ravens, but haven't been able to finish yet, and plan to watch Pupa if I can find out who is airing it (and when, if it hasn't started yet).

Honestly, I'm not sure if Manaka or Hikari is supposed to be the main character. But yeah, a dick that one.

For example in Neon Genesis Evangelion, as a nod to car fans, Misato drives an Alpine A310. If you have watched Ah! My Goddess!, most of their fanservice is actually references to vintage cars/motorcycles.

And some more:

Kill la Kill (again) - On to the second episode, which not only continues the over the top ridiculousness but amps it up. I love it. Still not fond of the fan service, but whatever... the rest is certainly enough to keep me watching.

Gingitsune (also again) - Second episode. I've seen this show described as heartwarming, sweet, and even relaxing. And well, yeah, it is pretty much all of those things. I enjoy it a lot, though I have seen mostly mixed reviews and complaints about lack of action, so your mileage may vary.

Tokyo Ravens - I feel as though I might enjoy this show more if I could move right into the second episode from the first. The first is mostly set up and to its credit I did come away with a mild interest in the characters, but there wasn't anything else that left me interested or enthusiastic about continuing on. I probably will, if I can remember, but I am keeping my expectations low.

Beyond the Boundary - I decided to watch this after seeing the second episode of Kill la Kill and made the mistake of suggesting that it probably wouldn't be as weird. It wasn't as weird, no, but it did start out with a guy relying on his glasses fetish to talk a bespectacled girl out of jumping from his school's roof, only to have her flip over a fence and stab him in the chest with her blood sword. There's quite a bit of humor here and the animation is fantastic. I really enjoyed the first episode and made sure to tune in this morning for the second.

Non Non Biyori - I grew up in the middle of nowhere and thought this was hilarious, but I'll admit that there wasn't much else besides 'in the country' jokes and scenery porn to be found in the episode and that really only stretches so far. I'm interested in seeing where they take it.

The only other series I have planned at the moment is Galilei Donna, though I do have a masochistically curious about Meganebu, which I'm fairly sure will be terrible.

I scanned the last 4 pages and didn't see this posted.

If you're a fan of Attack on Titans, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7B7kO-4Tkag

Then, also, watch this: http://youtu.be/chfmu7Jeyz0

Ahaha, just noticed these links. Good share!

the only thing I've been watching Kill La Kill, has anything else this season been enjoyable?

Having been out of work on medical I've had ample time to enjoy or force myself through much of this season.

Yowamushi Pedal (an otaku turning bicycle racer) has kind of blown me away with how invested I get into the episodes. Every single episode leaves me in emotional pain sympathizing with the main character, and saying "what the hell, over already?"

Gingitsune is cute, and I like Ging the fox herald.

Valvrave season 2 is not disappointing at all. Future-forwards still involved, and such a damn tease.

Outbreak Company is one I check my brain out for. The first few episodes were painful to stomach because it's really an overdose of hardcore otaku subjects. Mostly it's just the horror of watching dwarf and elf children start race wars over what type of game is better (3d vs 2d, little sister vs boys love) that keeps me going back. It's quite possibly all a very bad analogy to Columbus's arrival in the Americas and any accompanying diseases that came with him.

Golden Time isn't about High School students so I don't give a shit whether or not it's all angst and bad love relationships. I'd watch an anime about shoveling cow shit so long as the protagonist isn't in highschool and just for that reason alone.

Walkure Romanze suffers too much from fanservice and standard character tropes. It really could have been better, at this point I watch it for animated horses and the few joust scenes.

Sekai De ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai! also suffers from fanservice, but at least it's not a harem anime. Crotch shots of leotards galore while the main character moan/screams/flushes in awkward wrestling holds. I know the outfits are part of the flair in wrestling, and so far it's been a fairly positive show as far as women kicking ass. Too bad they have to repeatedly show crotches and only crotches in quite a few shots where that doesn't even transmit how painful the hold is to be in.

Log Horizon is one I look forward to. Far less disjointed story than Sword Art Online which always felt more like a few brief glimpses into the time as a whole instead of the entire story.

Yuusha Ni Narenakatta Ore Wa Shibushibu Shuushiku Wo Ketsui Shimashita (Couldn't be a hero so I got a job or whatever it is) is middle of the road. I'm curious about the world building and I enjoy the antics of the demonlord's daughter. Not as impressive as other Demon Lords that work though after I took time to watch that too.

Strike the Blood would be even better if it didn't involve Highschool students, otherwise I look forward to it every week. Vampires, demons, political maneuvering between shadow factions.

Agreed, both this one and Tokyo Ravens falls into the "average but fairly fun cliché stuff". I do look forward to either of them much more than the technically (and budgetary) superior Kyokai no Kanata. (which has largely failed to grab me, despite the usual KyoAni high quality animation)

I also watch White Album because I'm a sucker for that kind of melodrama :p

I think you'd like Golden Time for the melodrama then, I know I do. I swear It uses Daytime Soap Opera level tactics.

Kyokai no Kanata is beautiful animation and it grabbed me. Latest episode was meh in plot, but hopefully just a filler.

I looked up the TV Tropes page for Attack on Titan after not particularly being drawn into the anime after the first few episodes. That sounds almost suicidally depressing to read/watch, beyond even Warhammer 40K levels.

EDIT: Never mind, I got myself to watch more of it.
