wealth westeros vs essos

And yet Essos seems to have undeniably poorer armies. Save for the unsullied, all fighting forces we've seen have either been fickle sellsword companies or press ganged slave armies without any real taste for combat. Even the unsullied are acknowledged as lacking the strength and elan of Western Knights.

The disparity isn't true in their historical counterparts - Byzantine, Turkish and Saracen armies often proved to be more than a match for traditional Western armies.

Aside from the knights and men-at-arms belonging to wealthy houses, Westerosi armies mainly consist out of poorly-equipped peasant levies.

I think it varies among the two. Westeros has some spectacularly wealthy Lords. The Lannisters of Casterly Rock. The Hightowers and the Redwyne. These guys are both rich in liquid assets as wealth as land.

Paxter Redwyne has 1000 mechants ships. Five times the number of Xaro for example.

Xaro is just one person. The Thirteen have 1000 ships. The guild of Spicers 1200-1300, and the Tourmaline Brotherhood 800, all of which are a part of Qarth.

Watch out Ero has a half a dozen quotes to counter this.

But the majority of Westerosi armies aren't poorly-equipped peasant levies. They are semi-professional peasant landowners who are expected to supply their own equipment and serve their lord in times of war. And from many of the description the have their own mail armour, as well as helms, pikes etc. Not poorly equipped at all.

Xaro is just one person. The Thirteen have 1000 ships. The guild of Spicers 1200-1300, and the Tourmaline Brotherhood 800, all of which are a part of Qarth.

Just like Paxter Redwyne is one person. One person who has many ships (remember 1000+200warships) as a Government system (the Thirteen) or two trading guilds likely made of many members.

I put forward Paxter Redwyne might be wealthier than any single individual in Qarth. Just collectively they have more wealthier merchants than westeros.
