Will Arya wield Dark Sister?

Dorne in the USA

Recommended Posts

Since House Stark's sword is now gone, will Arya obtain Dark Sister as she is the "dark sister" of the core family of ASOIAF. I understand her obsession with Needle but will there be a time when she needs to exchange Needle for a greater sword? If not who do you think will end up with Dark Sister? Meera is my only other guess. This is my first post so any feedback would be great.

The name of the blade itself does seem to hint that Arya or Meera may eventually get it. Is it written somewhere where the sword actually is though? I thought it was just speculated that it may be in Bloodraven's cave. If that is the case, Arya may not ever see it unless she ends up at the wall or farther north. I don't see Bloodraven giving it up to Meera but that may be the only way it is reintroduced to the outer world if it is in fact in the cave.

There is no where stating the weight of valyrian steel and Arya will get stronger and older. She is a trained assassin and should have no problem wielding the blade later on in the story. I believe Bran will find a way to speak with Arya as his powers grow stronger. Meera is a good choice given her ties to House Stark being a Reed in all. She could find it and use it to cut BR down because he killed her brother and is apparently evil but a necessary evil. BR will die at the hands of Meera Reed by Dark Sister after she finds out her brother is Jojen Paste. Either way I just want to see it re-introduced and used by Arya of House Stark.

That sword has Meera's name written all over it, IMO. Don't why but I feel like Meera could be the Jaime Lannister circa Robert's Rebellion this time around: aka that one very secondary character that ends up doing something really momentous towards the end, for better or worse

Just the dark sister sword name only fits two characters in the series. I believe if Meera finds it in BR's cave she will wield it against BR for making JOJEN PASTE. Thus bringing it out in the world. Available for any character, hopefully Arya. She could even give it to Arya at her father's command considering crannogmen don't wield blades. I think she prefers the bow and prong.

GRRM is suppose to have said that 1 of the 3 heads of the Dragon did not have to be a Targ. I know I'm bringing it further than the OP might have intended, but the idea of Arya bothe wielding Dark Sister and riding a dragon seem quite plausible to me. Her serving as Visenya to Jon's Aegon --as some have said, mediating between ice and fire--, while Daenarys would be Rhaenys.

We don't realy know how large Dark Sister is' or even how large Visenya was for that matter. It may be that the sword was built for someone with a slight figure, and being VS, is much lighter than an ordinary sword.

Actually, I think there is. The first time that Jon Snow wields Longclaw he is amazed that it weighs no more than a regular longsword, (maybe even less - I don't have the passage in front of me) in spite of it being a bastard sword - half again as long.

Oh, and Jojen Paste is just crackpot, all the way. If you read the relevant chapter carefully, the theory is pretty much ruled out.

I'd love her to. Needle's is becoming to small for her, she's growing taller and stronger and she even says it when she's trying to convince herself to throw away Needle. Maybe Jon finds Dark Sister and gives it to Arya when they meet, giving Arya her second sword. He might even have a smith remake it to suit Arya

Dark Sister was forged for a "woman warrior" 2 POV characters meet that definition currently (Asha & Brienne) and Arya could become a third, Brienne already has a VSteel blade and has no siblings, and Asha for the immediate future is likely to be forcibly kept away from wielding swords.

As for weight if a bastard sword is larger than a long sword.

Longclaw (bastard sword) weighs as much as a long sword

A long sword is meant to be wielded one-handed

She has experience wielding short swords, which are lighter than long swords

Logic would dictate Arya should be OK

Jon having a smith rework it for Arya wouldn't be that much different than Tywin ruining Ice.

I don't think she really needs Needle but it has symbolic value. Jon's line about her being found with a needle in her hands implies that she keeps it. Arya has other blades that she uses and uses poison now. She hasn't killed with Needle in a while.

I don't think Valyrian steel is a good weapon for an assassin or someone who wants to stay under the radar. I also agree that it may be too heavy for her.

As for Visenya she was described as voluptuous but it's not said if she was tall. Rhaenys was slender like Arya.
