The previous R&R was fast approaching 30 pages, so we'll continue here.

^^ Well, it was over 40 pages by the time it got locked but we're back.

I spent hours talking on the phone with a friend who is a shownly last night. It's funny because one argument we hear a lot is that we're the only ones who take issue with some of the things happening on the show. But this friend had so many questions it's not even funny. So I explained some things for her, and she was pretty surprised with the different direction the show's going regarding a lot of arcs and characters.

The best part of the convo was when she said, 'I wish I'd listened to you sooner and read the books. But it's not too late, I'll start tonight.'

Anecdotes will be anecdotes but most of my friends and family who I've spoken to about the show din't like season 5 as much, if at all. One particular friend has been reading the books slowly but surely for a while now, but also asking about future changes he hasn't got to yet. I've converted him to book purism! MWUAHAHA.

Yeah, same here. I have a feeling this particular friend I've mentioned above is well on the path to become a book purist as well, given the questions she was asking and her reaction at the answers.
And same here again regarding family & friends who are not really into the show anymore. Even my mum, who has read the books a few times. Up until last year she was on the 'books are the books, the show is the show' bandwagon, something that resulted in a few heated arguments between us. Alas, not anymore. I think she was more disappointed with s 5 than I was; I think it's because she expected more whereas I really didn't.

First, thanks to KbF for starting this and mods for approving this oasis of sanity.

My husband, an unsullied, didn't watch this season after Episode 2. He has just lost all interest in it. His last comment was, "Go around it? I thought the point of that Moat Caitlyn was that you couldn't go around it." (I think he was confusing the fort with Ms. Jenner.)

Dang, I was hoping for some news out of Sasquan besides the Hugo stuff.

A pity really. Sounds like he would have loved Dorne.

He's an engineer, hence pretty logic-driven. I think he would have said something Spocklike, like "Fascinating." And then flipped over to the Military Channel.  :ohwell:

Ah, the unsullied spouses... Mine started by not wanting to watch it at all - back when the show first premiered in 2011. Then, because some of his friends were talking about it (and he had no idea what they were talking about), he decided to watch. Watched s 2 & 3, but never really got into it, and was constantly mocking things. He kept taunting me, 'If this is what those precious novels you keep reading are like, I think you're more insane than I thought'. When the Red Wedding episode aired, he said he was 'appalled'. I then explained to him the book version of it, and he started asking all 'those' questions, like the stabbing the foetus and so on. S 4 was another ordeal. Every scene we'd have to pause for questions and explanations.

And then we got to s 5... At one point in one of the earlier episodes, I was actually yelling at the TV. He asked me, 'I assume this is different in the books? Should I cheer or heckle? ' To which I replied, 'At this point, just take it as fact that everything is different in the books, and that you should just heckle non-stop'.

Well, the most interesting non-Hugo news is that Martin read one of the Arianne chapters. ;)

Well, if you think about it, it could have been *any* chapter: Barristan, Sansa, Jaime, Brienne, Davos... The list goes on and on and on! :D

Also, it seems pretty unofficially confirmed that we will get Rory back. Now, will it be as the gravedigger, or as Sandor, or the Hound? No idea.

Certainly hope it's not for something like Cleganebowl, but knowing how the show rolls...

My battle was finally won this weekend when I convinced my Unsullied husband to listen to the audiobooks. Now I won't be answering questions every 5 minutes when we watch the show. :D

Listening was how I went through the first time.  Now I always hear his voice on a re-read when the crows shriek "Corn! Corn!"   LOL.  Hope your hubs enjoys his listen.

Thanks for the new thread!

I knew Rory would be back! You can check the Rory thread from The Children, I was telling everyone he would be back. They set up more story with Sansa. It also seems to me they made it clear he doesn't want to kill his brother, he said the worst part of what happened to him was it was his own brother, and when Arya said what would you do if he was here, he told her to shut up and go to sleep.

(That doesn't mean they won't turn around and have him fight him, of course. Consistency thy name is not Game of Thrones. Also, Sandor representing the faith, don't make me laugh. That's what Stranger was telling us in the story, he doesn't belong there.)

Speaking of which, my unsullied anecdotes are fans of Sansa/Sandor and Jaime/Brienne who are disenchanted with how badly they messed up their stories (yes, I told them to read the books, and I shouldn't have, because that just made their disenchantment worse), and also just those who are in general turned off by the violence. The Red Wedding was a big turnoff, but all the violence since then. And everyone is extremely pissed off that Sansa was raped, everyone I talk to, still, very, pissed, off.

The friend I've mentioned above, the one who FINALLY decided to start reading the books... her main issue with the show, and this is how our hours-long conversation started, was Sansa being married off to Ramsay, only to be brutalised night after night. When I explained to her what's going on in Sansa's story in the books, she was outraged.

Yeah, that outrage never went away. It's galling how they just tossed everything aside with one objective: get Sansa raped.

I never listened to the audio books, just a clip I heard of the Blackwater chapter with Sansa/Sandor, and I hate the (Cockney?) accent he gives Sandor.

By the third book Dotrice's voice was giving me headaches!  I read the 4th as the audiobook wasn't available in the library, then listened to the fifth.   Then later I read all five.  Found I liked reading them better than listening.   Glad I read them, so much detail I missed when listening.

I started into the books after I saw s1, which I didn't see until after s3 had aired and a wailing when through the land concerning the RW.

Y'all see Natalia Tena and Art Parkinson (Rickon)? He's grown so much!

I love Osha. I hope they don't mess her up. I hated the cat fight with Meera. And Bran had to break it up. That would NEVER have happened, and that would have been one of the things someone on the lookout for needlessly offending women in the scripts would have redlined.
