Well that is what I’ve been saying. That’s why the conversation keeps moving in to Gametes because that is the primary binary we are talking about. Secondary sexual characteristics are bimodal. If people keep talking past each other it’s because they seem to be talking about different things when they say sex, and they often just merge it in with gender as well.

I think you kind of have to accept that the media landscape right now is incredibly polarised and it’s very rare for one person to be able to talk to both sides of the room because the incentive is toward polarity. If someone like Wright or Dawkins speaks to more right wing outlets it’s probably a mix of being invited on by them because it helps their agenda to discuss certain issues, and inversely left wing outlets might blacklist the same people because they absolutely won’t touch a topic with a bargepole or find opposing views dangerous, or don’t want to be associated with talking to people with opposing views. We just have to take all that into account. It’s not as if the sources cited from the other side of this conversation have been all that unbiased or fair minded either.

Well I'd say most scientists believe sex is binary, and I would be deeply worried about the scientists who don't believe it. If they do they then really need to start defining why they think that. Three-in-10-uk-scientists-believe-sex-isnt-binary I however would very much agree with this statement:

Of course there will be occasional exceptions like disorders of sexual development , but it doesn’t make it bimodal, or disprove the binary.

I dunno, to me I think the distinction is clear. I think Matrim is not being careful enough with his language. Some elements of sexual development are binary and some are bimodal. Primary sex organs are binary, but secondary sexual development like facial hair and wide hips are bimodal.

Is that really the appropriate way to frame it? Why not ask the question as to why there might be single sex wards in the first place? What reasons would there be for them to exist?

Sex is binary. Many of the characteristics exhibited by sex are bimodal. Ovaries and testes are not bimodal. Seems to me you are talking past people with your use of language.

So from what I can see the regulations mean new builds need to provide universal and single sex toilets? If true, what is the problem? It also seems to be something that was very popular in the consultation. Either way, if new builds have to provide both types of toilet then I think that is a good thing. Gender neutral toilets I’ve noticed are pretty horrible, with long queues and awkward moments by the sinks. I know even as a guy I don’t feel massively comfortable taking a massive dump and then smiling at a group of ladies afterwards as the smell wafts up their noses. But maybe that’s just a me issue.

The sex binary is a fact. There are males and females. You might say the way that is expressed may differ with various factors but it doesn’t change the basic fact of the sex binary.
