  1. As a lawyer taught basically under the precepts of English law, I doubt that all the property of people who die intestate goes to either the crown, the PoW or the government. Every country has a hierarchy of inheritance in the event of intestacy. A quick Google tells me it’s the same in the UK, and just like Canada (or, probably more likely, Canada, just like the UK) there are monetary triggers, all the estate going to the spouse if the value is below a certain threshold, and if the estate is worth more (seems to be £270,000) and there are children the amount over the threshold amount is divided between them. And yes, lineal descendants come into play if there are no spouses or children: siblings, parents and grandparents. I couldn’t imagine Canada’s laws being so greatly different. I went back to the article and it clearly spells out the meaning of “bona vacantia” - Charles inherits only if there are no lineal descendants. He also gets any leftover assets when a company is dissolved because of years of inactivity. That usually happens when there’s an intestacy and no one is aware the testator owned a company. That does happen. And guess what? If you don’t have a will go and make your bloody will! Go to a stationary shop and get a printed form if you have no money for a lawyer. Or are too cheap to pay a lawyer. As for the shocking news that Charles used the money to put buildings into good repair, I think the guy has proven himself to be a good landowner and someone who hires locals and supports the local economy. I’d rather have Charles get my money than assholes who slash the health care system and party during lockdowns, and who thought older people dying in an epidemic was just the nature of things.
  2. Uh, in Canada the “Crown” ie the provincial government, gets the assets if a person dies intestate with no lineal descendants. In this case it’s the actual Crown. What happens in all the other areas of the UK? Don’t the assets also escheat to the Crown?
  3. I’ve gotten sick and tired of the bullshit being slung in these threads. “Think of the dead children” but no Israeli children died, right? If you don’t believe me go back and re-read threads one and two where doubts were expressed about children killed by Hamas. The truth is we all live in countries where children are considered unimportant until they come of age, whatever that age is, and thus constant reference to how many children died is sooooo bloody cynical. And running an AlJazeera article that ignores the differences in the two countries is just icing on the cake. My position is that all the deaths are important. Reading about entire families being wiped out, 19 people, 35 people, 50 people, who all lived together in the same buildings is deeply tragic. I don’t need to know how many were children to get my sympathy.
  4. Keep us posted on your surgery. Hope all goes well and you heal quickly!
  5. Those were all courtesy of a dad and his daughter (they trade jokes) at dinner tonight.
  6. What’s the difference between a crocodile and an alligator? You’ll see one in a while and the other later.
  7. What do you get when you plant kisses? Tulips. when do ducks wake up? At the quack of dawn. Where do bad rainbows go? To prism. Don't worry, it’s a light sentence. what did the O say to the H? Nice belt! I went to the monastery and saw a guy making fries. I asked if he was the friar, and he said no, I’m the chipmunk!
  8. What’s the difference between a tuna, a piano and tub of glue? You can tuna piano but you can’t piano a tuna fish. Hey. Don’t blame me! eta: people say, but what about the pot of glue? People always get stuck on that.
  9. Well, I now have to say that the predictive text on the iPhone is so good it’s a distracting pain in the ass and I may have to turn it off.
  10. I’d say most of what’s in this post is false. The Russians don’t give a shit about Ukrainian lives. They’ve wiped out entire towns. I do have to agree that, from what I’ve seen in the news, far more infrastructure damage has been done in Gaza. It looks like a wasteland. And none of my arguments are made in bad faith. Why would I have bad faith on the topic of dead children? Do you deny the median age of the Ukrainian population is 44 and the Gaza population is 19? Is that bad faith to you????
  11. You know the saying about statistics, lies, damn lies and statistics? In the last three years Ukraine has lost just under 8 M residents to immigration. That’s more than all the Palestinians. Is that important? Did you see the scenes at the Polish borders, all women and children because men were not allowed to leave? Oh, maybe about 8 M women and children? (Yes, probably not 100% women and children, but they made up the majority). The median age in Ukraine is 44. It’s 19 in Gaza. Is that maybe why so many more children have died? And the Ukrainian number is the “official” number, as has been pointed out before, and no one believes the numbers provided by the Russians. The Ukrainians claim entire towns have been leveled and their citizens killed. The town of Maryinka was destroyed and its population alone was 10,000. No one knows how many are dead. I personally think every death in Gaza has been a tragedy, a point I’ve made before. It’s the adults who are going to rebuild the country, not the children. It’s the adults who are needed to raise the children and feed them, clothe them and educate them. I understand the emphasis on children, to blacken the Israelis as much as possible. But I’d take the emphasis on children more seriously if any of you came from countries that actually valued children. Take the US, as has repeatedly been explained to us non-American readers, where politicians want to force women to have children and then abandon both mothers and babies after birth. And Canada. We have a situation that I think is the same as in the US. If you lose a child in an accident you’re lucky to get enough money in a lawsuit to cover the burial of the child. Children have no value in our countries. Dead children are a tragedy to the families but not to the country because there are always more babies being born. You have a dead kid? Have another one. I wasn’t always that cynical, going to law school educated me on the topic, and the news stories coming out of the US and elsewhere simply reinforces my cynicism.
  12. I did the IPhone update and now so many things are ugly. The ugliest thing was figuring out how to stop my devices from connecting with each other. I kept getting a bloody air drop message saying my phone had connected with the old phone I use for Pokémon, but I didn’t know what was going on and it was driving me crazy while I tried to get rid of it. Btw, the new predictive text is really, really good. And the ability to stop companies from tracking you has apparently been greatly improved.
  13. There are some very bizarre stories about the kinds of animals people are showing up with at the airport. I wonder if that miniature horse wore a diaper. The duck apparently charmed everyone. What do you think about emotional support animals? Dogs and cats were what I think everyone first expected, but monkeys and kangaroos and even turkeys have made appearances with their humans.
  14. What the hell happened in Dublin? Some guy stabbed 4 children, and he’s also been injured. Did the bystanders who grabbed him also stab him? Did he stab himself? A suicide attempt? Reading between the lines (he was a naturalized citizen, which happened 20 years ago), was he, uh, from the Middle East? Is that why right-wing mobs rioted in central Dublin? The reports I’ve seen mention the mob was anti-immigration. Very circumspect, very careful language being used. I hope all our boarders are okay, safe and nowhere near the riots.
  15. I am shocked, Ty, truly shocked, that you would suggest that anyone eat a protected species. All 18 species of penguins and their eggs are protected by international treaty. As for eating them, let’s quote Captain Cook on that topic. They taste like “a piece of beef, odiferous cod fish and a canvas-backed duck roasted together in a pot, with blood and cod-liver oil for sauce”.
  16. Saw them in Detroit in 1976, iirc. Fabulous concert in a small venue. Now I’m sad.
  17. I was at the hardware store today and told the person helping me that of course the weather had turned ugly after a couple of weeks of pretty good weather, the guy building my fence had been sick with a bad cold for three weeks. And now he’s going to be working in the cold and damp, and his wife is going to kill me if he gets sick again. The fellow told me his brother is an opera singer in Germany and also had a cold-like thing, very bad for him and his voice. He also said they’re worried in Germany because there’s been this cold/respiratory thing going around and there is some concern it’s a new version of Covid. Anyone heard anything along these lines?
  18. If you look up Kale, Sausage and Pear recipe, the recipe from the Washington Post comes up. The author suggests some alternatives to pears.
  19. Pouring rain here, all day. At least it’s not snow, or worse, freezing rain. Freezing rain is being called for an hour north of the city.
  20. It’s a reference to DMC, who is there both literally and figuratively. eta: Florida, just to be clear
