  1. Literally LOL’ed at Drudge’s headline right now: Cancer Murders OJ.
  2. Also, I know it’s pedantic, but we really should distinguish between legalization and decriminalization. Marijuana has been partially decriminalized throughout New York State since I grew up there. Indeed, since 1977. And in NYC it was further decriminalized in 2014 - notably to little long term effect on arrests.
  3. You really need to stop with this horseshit. Yes, I read you in two separate posts compare the hellscape that legalization has wrought on your neighborhood with the pristine pleasantville you enjoyed back in the day - and directly credited the latter environs to the efforts of the mob. I suppose “pining” was a rhetorical flourish on my part, but it’s a perfectly fair depiction of what you wrote.
  4. Yeah this is the point. If alcohol is legal - and it should be considering the monumental failure when it wasn’t - then so should weed. Should it be regulated like alcohol? Absolutely. Which, you know, most legalization measures at least try to implement. None of this is a compelling argument against legalization. What I will agree with is the THC content seems to be getting out of hand in certain cases. If you wanna regulate that I’m all for it.
  5. I think a better way to put it is we can never 100% know what anyone is capable of. That’s importantly different than saying everyone is capable of such acts.
  6. Gotta say while I enjoy you making Ty look stupid and understand where you’re coming from, it seems really odd how you keep pining for the days when the mafia ran your neighborhood as if that was a better community structure.
  7. Never disagreed with what’s going on in NYC. My point is the botched rollout there/in Albany is a silly reason to be against legalization as a whole in the face of the myriad other success stories. Not to mention the effort obviously keeps tons of people out of prison that should not have their lives ruined.
  8. Yeah I really don’t get how you can take the situation in NYC to generalize when there are tons of other positive examples and aspects to legalization.
  9. Not sure why this seems to be being posed as a competition between the two. Legalizing marijuana can also help keep people out of prison and their lives being ruined, which is pretty great.
  10. Recreational legalization is on the ballot in Florida as well.
  11. Yes the initiative is essentially the same as Florida’s - basically codifying Roe as a constitutional amendment - and already has more than enough signatures. Notably, Nevada also has an analogous initiative effort. Difference between Florida and the latter two, though, is Florida’s already survived court challenges and thus WILL be on the ballot. State courts could at least theoretically block the other two (albeit that’s very unlikely in Nevada).
  12. When I read the recap of the main event last night it sounded ridiculous with all the run-ins. But I did watch the last 30 minutes this morning, and gotta say it was a lot of fun and generally worked. Agree with BFC that Austin would have been a better choice to take out “final boss” Rock, but Taker is pretty much the only other guy with the cachet to have in that role. And yeah, he was probably cheaper. But still, woulda been awesome to hear the glass break one more time and that was the perfect opportunity. Also agree Cena did not look good. Really awkward haircut.
  13. I really liked Martian too, but I’d hesitate to say it’s one of Scott’s best. Similar feelings on Talented Mr. Ripley which was discussed earlier. I think it’s good, and was particularly interesting when I first watched it as a..I think fourteen year old. But it’s not that great. Anyway is this like Matt Damon week and I missed it?
  14. Arms shouldn’t be doing what an MLB pitcher demands, both irt velocity and breaking balls. I don’t know what the solution is, but it will take the union to get 100% on board for any changes to be feasible. Otherwise, the new norm will be/already is staffs in which there’s little if any distinction between starters and relievers, plus every team will anticipate at least 20 pitchers will be significantly relied upon to get through 162 games.
  15. Sorry - I did not mean to start a derail concerning tipping nor service workers. I love service workers. Quite literally, over the years. I just had a really bad experience on Friday that was exacerbated by my poor mood after traveling all day. For example, had a layover in Nashville where you can smoke, but it costs ten bucks. That always pisses me off.
  16. Heh. MPSA is always at Palmer House. It was kinda cool the first couple times but the novelty has definitely worn off - this was the first time I went since covid so it’s been awhile. Service there has definitely gone downhill. Friday night at the lobby bar was the first times in my life I’ve given a zero dollar tip..At least intentionally. Anyway, happy to be home — yes, in TAMPA, FLORIDA!!!
  17. There is..a lot I’d like to respond to specifically. Unfortunately I’m still being hobbled by the 431 mishegoss. Plus I’m in a Chicago hotel that’s generally been pissing me off. Anyway, the only way a third party emerges is due to one of the two main parties destroying themselves. Again, the electoral system - along with the election rules therein - makes it rather impossible for a third party candidate to win consistently. That goes for Perot too btw, even if he didn’t drop out then change his mind. Two things I wanna emphasize. One, each state can decide how they allocate their electoral votes. So a PR system could be instituted at the presidential level by state. Two, populism is not going to fuse the far left and far right. This idea always fails, and is at least as hopeless as the “radical” centrists. What a third party candidate should lean in to is being an outsider and a celebrity. There was a politico article on this the other day I’m too lazy to cite.
  18. So No Labels is packing it in after they couldn’t find anybody to run under their..no label. These type of groups are always eye-rolling in their premise that centrism somehow means better and even more righteous. Not to mention their laughable lack of understanding that the US electoral system simply doesn’t allow for the competitive emergence of third parties. But what was especially amusing with this effort was they thought they could make a difference during rampant polarization.
  19. There are countless works on the historical Jesus, but a recent one I found enjoyable with an insightful perspective is Reza Aslan’s Zealot (2013). Really easy read too, pretty sure I read the whole thing in two sittings.
  20. Dunno why you’re under the impression opinions can’t be wrong and idiotic.
  21. Bad opinions on movies can include bad business opinions on movies.
  22. I mean, I was just gonna say he obviously didn’t get rich due to his opinions on movies, but this works too.
  23. I’d just find it amusing. Maybe they can get Parker to come out of retirement. And Boris Diaw.
