  1. Meh, it appears like I was the only one who did not rate this episode. I mean, dont get me wrong, there were pieces in it that were nice, and the chemistry between Wesley and Chong was there, but I didnt think it landed. Part of my issue with it is that it was another low budget episode without and pew-pew lasers (and you know, they film in Toronto so it was a bit lazy to just take the cameras outside rather than inside). Further, there have been too many episodes across various iterations of ST when our intrepid crewmembers return to contemporary North American Earth, and this episode didnt break new ground. My worry is that they are slowly losing momentum this season, but I hope Episode 4 is a return to form.
  2. Ah yes, the LGBTQ case brought forth before the Supreme Court where the key document itself may be fake. About par for this Supreme Court.
  3. Unfortunately college education is one key path for upward mobility, so I'm not sure I would frame it as "improve everything else and college admissions would become more equitable", which I think is precisely backwards. I also would suggest that "AA leads to anti-Asian discrimination" assigns too much causality to the former. What we can say for a fact is that removing AA leads to increased Caucasian and Asian admissions into colleges (based on historical data I think from California etc), but as others have pointed out, for elite universities that zero-sum math only happens because the ADLC admissions cant be touched. The real anti-Asian discrimination is from the admissions committees and all the biases they bring to their choices (one of the key complaints is how they look at Asian applicants as having 'sameness' and using weasel words like 'quiet' and 'humble' to discount leadership abilities)
  4. England on track to get to a thousand runs based on their current situation.
  5. Dont know what you mean by new, there are 2 seasons of Short Trek with 10 episodes total. The one I am talking about is S2 Ep1, which is Spock's first day as an Ensign on the Enterprise.
  6. I too was caught up in the emotive aspects of the episode on first viewing, but on future reflection started getting a bit annoyed with the plot holes, as well as the somewhat ham-fisted analogies they were drawing with current events. At any rate, has everyone watched Short Treks? One of the episodes in it provides nice context for Spock's testimony (when he talks about Una's secret)
  7. Cardiologist: Hot enough to make your heart skip a beat, smart enough to make it start up again (also works for those who deal with respiratory diseases, just replace with "take your breath away")
  8. It doesnt matter to his supporters, they already have a 3-pronged attack ready: "What about Joe?", "He said off the record so the recording was in violation of journalistic ethics" and "The information he shared wasnt that serious anyway"
  9. He just uploaded an 11 minute statement quite recently defending his actions and explaining his rationale (nothing new compared to what we've heard before IMO)
  10. 500k is hardly average for a doctor in the US, and if you compare general practitioners there is perhaps a more reasonable comparison to be made between the two countries, Once you get into specialists the disparity may be become more for certain areas (particularly the cosmetic ones).
  11. I give Ep2 of S2 SNW a solid 6 gavels out of 9 (to continue the US centric judicial analogies). Seriously, does Starfleet/the Federation even consider as part of its philosophies anything that isnt human and more narrowly, from ancient Rome (sometime Greece)
  12. I think all of us who have outstanding mortgages are technically broke by some definition of the other. Not privy to what the good Doctor's views are on debt/personal responsibility when it comes to finances etc. Some people get very worked up by such matters; myself having been a broke graduate student at some point and now in a fairly comfortable position am quite relaxed when it comes to judging others.
  13. Surprised BoJo wants to claim British tourism as cutting edge science (wonder what new insights have been plumbed from the depths of Mallorca's bowels ever year), rather than distance himself as far as possible from the reckless foolhardiness of the American Stockton Rush
  14. They're now about 350 km away from Moscow in the Lipetsk province. Looks like quite a bit of progress was made in the night. From my naive perspective either the Russian forces were caught flat footed, or some of the top brass simply decided not to assign forces there (some sort of passive collusion).
  15. I wouldnt discount 'national security' as a reason too, with the US Navy wanting to keep its detection capabilities (and locations of those assets) secret.
  16. I'm sure there is a balance to be had between the 'eat the rich' and 'brave explorers who met a tragic end' approaches. Similarly, the same could be said about the breathless coverage of the rescue efforts versus the near radio silence about the fate of the migrants (tbh, I am disappointed with the Guardian for the former). Probably has to do with the level of polarization in the world.
  17. 'Lower' federal judges are bound by a code of ethics but Supreme Court justices are not. So in this non-hypothetical, I believe the federal judge is obliged to do so. There is no recourse as such for SC justices and presumably they are required to police themselves. Not sure how that can be changed without other arms of the government being involved. I mean, I suppose Roberts could issue some sort of censure which mainly serves as a point of embarrassment rather than having any legal repercussions, but it may not be sufficient to deter future episodes.
  18. Meanwhile, 500 migrants are still missing off the coast of Greece where their ship sunk in international waters. And this is a situation, I surmise, where no waivers were signed and the logistics of saving them were perhaps a lot simpler.
  19. I dont think England were ahead most of the time though. The only time they truly were was at the end of both first innings. I'd say it was mostly at parity and the small margins made a difference (such as the declaration lol)
  20. Yeah, declaring early and not taking the new ball till there were less than 30 runs are baffling decisions (the first in hindsight, granted). Sometimes, conventional wisdom is best.
  21. Some FB groups I am on still slag it off, but I found it a fairly decent episode. It allowed for Quark's growth as a character (TNG always depicted the Ferengi poorly, descending into weird stereotypes with slight flirtations with anti-Semitism). Some of the cast may have questioned their career choices though, skipping along to a nursery rhyme.
  22. Yes, it does rank pretty high, but also derivative from a previous effort, no? At any rate, wonder how others felt about 'classic' TNG episodes as they came out (for instance, Chain of Command). This is a new experience for me, evaluating episodes as they freshly arrive- maybe with time we can appreciate some of them more.
  23. Yes, heat transfer from the body would be through radiation, there are well known laws for it (look up the Stefan-Boltzmann law). You are looking mostly at oxygen (and other gases) leaving the body because of the difference in pressure, potentially in a violent fashion (along with the aforementioned asphyxiation). Couple minutes tops. Then again, you also cant see lasers in space (or 'phaser' fires from spaceships). I tend to ignore the physics aspects of most of Star Trek (or I'd go bananas, as I do have multiple degrees in it)
  24. Babs Olusanmokun (M' Benga) also played Jamis in Dune and is a pretty good jiu jitsu exponent. One of the regrets the showrunners had for his character is that they never got to use his skills in S1. That's all I'll say without getting too spoiler-y. About Spock not earning his loyalty from crewmates, it didnt bother me so much. At least not as much as Hemmer in S1 and his goodbye, which I thought was unearned. They didnt show a whole lot of interactions of him and his fellow crewmates. Lastly, if you watch the Ready Room interviews, Carol Kane speaks (at least in cadence) quite close to how her character does, i.e, slowly. Add to that the weird accent and it does make for an acquired taste (but not bothersome to me). But you know, chief engineers are by nature a weird breed. Just accept it as part of the position.
  25. The original quote has been misattributed to Mark Twain, with the place in question being San Francisco (where I know he did spend some time based on a Star Trek episode). Dont think we'll find the real originator, probably lost to the mists of time. Another weather quote that is correctly attributed to Twain is "If you dont like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes" - something also true for Michigan.
