On the Set of Season 4

Westeros

Just to note again, Dany's 'palace' in Meereen seems kind of 'down sized' , my take from the books was that it was about 10 times bigger than the Iron Throne room.

Some of the CGI VFX budget must have gone elsewhere.

^The on the set shows that Gregor IS wearing a helmet, at least at first. It looks like a black half helm to me with a chainmail thing around his neck. But he does start off with a helm.

If you're discouraged about the duel I don't know what could be said to reassure you. It's being directed by Alex Graves (most likely at least, it seems like it'll be in ep. eight) who also did the Beric v. Hound duel.

BTW, about Conan Stevens, the guy that replaced him in the Hobbit (or the guy who plays Azog, not entirely sure ATM) stated that he was replacing a seven foot actor who wasn't very good. For some reason I'm unable to paste links, so I can't find the exact version, but it does point to a common theme, doesn't it? (Not that Ian Whyte was better.)

Yeah, I see what you're talking about. It's not Gregor's signature bucket helmet but I guess a half helm is better than no helm. The Gregor/Sandor fight is one of my all-time favorite GoT scenes so that at least would be good news. In regards to Conan, he is awesome when it comes to portraying an intimidating character. I've seen him in Spartacus as Sedullus and The Bible as Goliath. Both parts he did well in. I can't speak much for his acting skills in general as I've only seen him play small roles but I seriously doubt he was incapable of portraying one of Tolkein's orcs. From what I gather on his part in the Hobbit, Peter Jackson fucked him over when he decided to make all the orcs (with the exception of a lonesome few) completely CGI. I think Conan actually did a bunch of Azog scenes before the decision was finally made to make him Bolg instead and have the actor who was going to be Bolg in the next movie (Manu Bennett) start doing motion capture for the new Azog. Conan had the smallest of cameos in An Unexpected Journey during the Battle of Azanulbizar where he appeared and died in the same two-to-three second scene as himself dressed as the old, non-computer-animated Azog. Then Conan was dropped entirely from the movies for whatever reason and Lawrence Makoare took up the mantle of CGI Bolg in the Desolation of Smaug. According to Bennett, they both attended the same high school and he personally witnessed Conan get in a fight with a bully as well as become a celebrity on the rugby team. They reconnected after sharing roles on Spartacus but Manu admitted to being jealous when Conan told him at a party that he had landed Azog in the Hobbit films. Turns out Manu tried out for that role as well and lost it to Conan. There was probably a bit of drama between them after that and I guess Manu decided to be an asshole about it after he stole the role. I don't think Conan's a bad actor by any means. I truly believe he was meant to play Gregor Clegane since he was so utterly perfect for the role. But from seeing how he talks in his interviews, reading what people say about him on the internet, and from my own personal interactions with him via email, I don't think he's the most level-headed actor out there either. I'm starting to believe what happened with him and HBO may have been due in part to an ego problem, which is really sad.

To those who are annoyed at Oberyn's flamboyant fighting, I think that's the angle they've went with. There's an interview I found by searching his name on twitter where he says he was trained by a wushu guy for GoT (who'd worked with Jackie Chan) so I'm thinking his fighting style will be very much THAT way. Since we`ve only seen snippets of the fight, and in the case of the trailer snippets that are from different parts of the fight (given the helmet`s presence and then disappearance), I wouldn`t be too quick to judge it yet. But it will be flashy. He says in the interview ``that he has some moves``.

Also even tho a lot of time in the later books is spent in Braavos I don't think we are ever inside it?

Do we see it from the outside?

So that's a set that even GRRM has not described yet.

Makes one wonder if there will be a CGI Braavos? and if Braavos will appear in the intro?

If Davos and Stannis go to Braavos this season, that also at least raises the chances that Arya will get there this season: after all, one of the arguments against her going there was the assumption that they wouldn't want to build a new city set just for her. I was kind of assuming that she'd spend most of this season with the Hound, but maybe not.

The Red Keep's Great Hall is supposed to be way bigger than it is on the show. There was room enough for a multitude of dragon heads to hang along the walls on either side. I never imagined Dany's throne room that size when I read the books. I, myself, imagined it more-or-less as it's shown in the trailer except with ebony furniture, ivory pillars, and dark blue walls devoid of windows. I think it would take away from the significance of the Iron Throne if Dany were to already have one more grandiose in some far-off land.

I think it's extremely appropriate. Oberyn taunts Gregor throughout the entire fight. His confidence is what gets him. He even tries to stab Gregor with his own sword through an eye slit. Of course he's gonna do some flashy moves with his spear in the beginning. Reminds me of Prince of Persia or something.

I think we still need a full refusal by the Lannisters in order to get the Bank fully on Stannis' side, but that could happen next season.

I thought the IB would need to be snubbed by Cersei first before having anything to do with Stannis. But now I think my timeline of events might be wrong. Don't see how there's enough time for Cersei to take power in KL and reject the IB before this Stannis scene.

When Stannis goes to Braavos in Season 4, the Iron Bank will probably refuse to give him a loan since he appears to be destined to lose the war. Why would they fund someone who doesn't stand a chance at repaying them? The point of this scene is probably just to introduce Tycho Nestoris and the importance of the IB. Then when Cersei "snubs" them, they'll send Tycho to find Stannis again in Season 5 while he's stationed near Winterfell to strike a deal concerning the Iron Throne's debt to them, just like in ADWD.

I'll stress again that Tycho Nestoris will have more than one appearance this season given the info on Mark Gatiss's CV. My guess is his snubbing and his meeting Stannis will occur this season.

I theorized (either here or on wicnet) that maybe Daavos would go to Lys to seek out Sallador or that Nestoris would go to Dragonstone. This is the perfect middle ground. My evidence was the Essosi-sounding character Lhara that Sarine Sofair was cast as. Given her tweets and those of a porn girl she shared her scene with, this will be a garden variety GoT nude scene, but there were things about the tweets that pointed to the direction they would go with the Dragonstone storyline. The girl Samantha Bentley (with a very nsfw twitter) tweeted about working with Liam Cunningham, as well as Sarine Sofair. She also posted a picture of herself in costume that resembled the drawings of Lysene girls in one of the bluray features about the Free Cities (I think she's deleted the pic since, and I wouldn't advise trawling through her pictures, mostly nsfw stuff there). My theory was that Davos and Saan would get up to some shenanigans. I think with this Braavos deviation that could still happen...

That makes a lot of sense, thanks!

So this can serve to introduce the Iron Bank as potential king-makers. Then when Cersei rejects them later on, it will be obvious to the audience what a bad mistake that was on her part!

Oh ok. But doesn't Jaime come home and seriously go to town on one of them in his Kingsguard about how he's never heard of him? And what will Tyrion say 'She's been fucking Lancel and... yeah probably just Lancel?' It doesn't really sound as serious.

^Someone either here or on wicnet suggested that he might say "She's been fucking Lancel and [person #2] and probably Podrick for all I know." That would be a good way to utilize last year's TriPod scene and a way around having to acquaint the viewers with Moonboy just so one line works.

As for who else she'll actually sleep with, who knows. People have suggested Bronn or Meryn Trant but I can't see show Cersei sleeping with either. Show Cersei isn't really as sexual as her book counterpart, other than her bringing Lancel to her bed in Jaime's absence. I'm sure they'll come up with something. Maybe TV Oberyn WOULD be willing to sleep with her (despite his book protestations) to work against her somehow. The two actors seem to have hit it off (they're all over each others respective twitters and instagrams) so maybe they got closer after filming something in particular...

BTW, in this video we see D.B. Weiss talking to the guy who plays Styr. I know that on season 1 and 2 the showrunners tried to make themselves available to talk to the actors and discuss the show with them and so on, but that on season 3 they were less available for that because they had shouldered directorial duties. Would that mean that D.B. isn't just talking to him for kicks but that he is DIRECTING him and that thus, Styr will appear as early on as episode one? If so, given all the King's Landing setup and re-establishing old characters and so on, the premiere will be very busy. I'm beginning to think that the premieres need to be longer than an hour rather than the finales.
