Was Jon Arryn Suicidal?

Jon Arryn knew that Lysa was not a maiden when they got married. I am pretty sure he knew she had been pregnant before (afterall he married her because she was known to be fertile). He would have asked Hoster Tully who the father was and Hoster hated Littlefinger and would have told him about the little gift Lysa gave him and the tansy tea and moon tea. So why bring Littlefinger to court? Why listen to your crazy wife who got pregnant for the man she wants you to give position and bring to court? Seems weird to me.

He was not marrying Lysa, he was marrying riverland, banners of riverland certainly worth a girl who has lost her maidenhood

It makes sense that Hoster kept Petyr's identity secret at the time of the wedding. However, I do find it a bit odd that he didn't warn Jon when he found out that Littlefinger was named the Master of Coins by Jon and was living in a near proximity to Lysa.

Jons relationship with Lysa wasn't a warm one to begin with, and Hoster would have known that. Why risk causing any further estrangent? That's what telling Jon would lead to, after LF was brought to KL..

Because Lysa (who is not known for being subtle) rekindling her affair with Petyr and subsequently being discovered is infinitely more damaging for her and House Tully.

And how should Hoster know that the crush Lysa had some 10 years ago on the guy she hasn't seen all this time is still present?

He obviously couldn't but it should have raised a few alarms. At best, he could have innocently inquired why it happened that Petyr got the job and if discovered t that it was on Lysa's recommendation, at minimum should have had a quiet word with Jon. Come to think of it, it's surprising that a cautious man like Jon wouldn't ask his father in law for reference before appointing a relatively unknown and controversial figure (too low born) into such a powerful position. I guess he trusted Lysa's word and Petyr's stellar recommendations from Gulltown.

As you said, Hoster knew that Lysa's marriage wasn't a warm one and hat his daughter was at one point crazy about LF so the risk was there. Not saying it's a plot hole, just that it was perhaps a slight overlook on Hoster's part.

I don't think Jon Arryn knew. It was Lysa who asked Jon to give her "foster brother" some important post, and if Jon Arryn had known it was him who impregnated her, he would have suspected that she was still in love with him and would have made his best to keep Petyr away.

I don't know what Hoster did tell Lord Arryn. Almost any story would make Lysa look worse than the truth. Petyr is at least her childhood friend, somebody she had known all her life and who had all the time he needed to gain her love and seduce her, rather than some tourney knight or wandering singer who caught her eye.

Lysa's recommondation got him the job at Gulltown.. With Lysa in KL, there was a safe distance.. Nothing to worry about. :) Jon promoter LF to KL, because of the good work LF had done at Gulltown..

Jon didn't immediately promote LF to KL.. LF was given a position at Gulltown in 289 AC, stayed there for a while, working, in everyone's eyes "miracles", and when eventually promoted to KL, where he spend three years working in an unknown position before he was promoted to the Small Council.

Look at it from Hoster's side.. In his eyes, Lysa hadn't seen LF for 10 years. She was pregnant, and thus occupied, or had already given birth to SR, and was thus occupied. Hoster had caused Lysa an immense amount of grief (if he believed he was responsible for all her miscarriages and stillbirths as well). Why take away her old childhood friend? When there's no reason to assume that Lysa still likes him (it was just the fancy of a young, teenage girl, after all, or so a father would think), and while knowing that LF hadn't been into Lysa (something that gets overlooked rather often).

Hoster knew only the 14 year old boy who was crazy about Catelyn to the point of duelling up until the death for her.. The boy who hadn't been in love with Lysa (he would have been there to observe). Hoster didn't knew the man LF became, the man who was allright with sleeping with Lysa to get a step further ahead in "the game".

All good points. Thanks a lot.
