Just like Ellaria was against revenge...

Wow. Now I'm so sad, because you're right. They're totally casting Darkstar, Sword of the Morning, aren't they? They'll even take away that he was of the night.

I don't think it's Arthur Dayne or a flashback. In fact I don't think it's anyone from the books.

If 'Dawn' is important to the story, then I think it'll just be a mechanism to introduce the Sword. With the Legendary fighter going down when he is beaten by Plot Armour.

Arthur Dayne alive and living with Howland Reed and Ashara Dayne confirmed.

H+A=M

That would be awesome. I can't think of a more exciting way for Jon Snow to learn about his parentage then by him or Sam or Jaime running into a still alive, now obi-wan kenobi styled Ser Arthur Dayne.

That being said, if that was the case then I think they'd be looking for a good actor and not a good swordsman, which leads me to think that it could be a TOJ flashback.

That being said, the show rarely does flashbacks and I've liked it that way. Flashbacks are a little cheap in my opinion and almost purely for exposition when used poorly. I can't see the show staging an entire fight scene for flashback purposes. Even if it's one of Bran's visions, I can't see them needing a great swordsman if the scene is going to be somewhat of a choppy and surreal vision/glimpses of the past. Finally, the television audience who do not read the books would not understand, care about, or maybe even recognize Arthur Dayne without some serious exposition as he's only been mentioned a handful of time in the show and in passing.

None of it makes too much sense unless the show resorting to "90's TV show era Flashback/Exposition Porn", which would be too big of a departure in style for this show I think. Maybe this character is not Arthur Dayne?

But then again last season ventured into Highlander 2 territory of quality so maybe the show will resort to "90's TV show era Flashback/Exposition Porn" and explore the territory of Highlander: The Series style quality? *face palm* I wanted a good story, but I needed a bad flashback.

But there is no way that a great swordsman is needed for a scene like this, right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6fq-elMOKg

I understand his visions will become more clear but I still can't see a cleanly shot flashback being shot as Bran's Vision. Usually there is a surreal element to these types of dreams and visions to separate them from reality so the audience is not confused by them?

Watch it be a recast of a not-dead Barristan Selmy.

But, I hope it's Arthur Dayne and a ToJ flashback.

TOJ flashback would be one scene, which hardly justifies a full week of shooting.

Maybe we're getting some Arthur Dayne fanfiction... maybe it's Darkstar... maybe they merged the two characters :D

It really depends on how long they make the scene. Also, the shooting would involve the choreography practices too.

A TOJ setpiece may not be a single scene but first we get a brief 5 second glimpse.

Then a next episode Bran is able to hold it for 30 seconds.

Then finally we get a glorious 5 minute swordfight complete with young Ned.

And dont forget Bran will have "Rootdude" to explain his visions for him.

I am not saying it's GOING to happen, but if I had to pick , I would pick Philip Winchester.

I think he's an excellent actor, while I believe he considers himself American he was either raised in or went to school in England so his British accent is exemplary if not perfect, he has already starred as an English person in an English tv series (Sgt Stonebridge in Strike Back et al) ... and if he can pass himself of admirably as a SAS-trained Military Intelligence operative, and look the part while doing it, he can definitely do the Arthur Dayne thing.

Plus, cmon, he was already THE Most legendary knight in the world, he was Leontes aka Sir Lancelot in Camelot on Cinemax lol :)

They HAVE to show the ToJ sequence eventually. They did not do it in season 1 when they had Sean Bean on board is because the general feeling is that the books did the ToJ sequence too early, thus giving away the R+L=J twist well ahead of its time. Now that Jon is "dead" on the show, it makes sense that they will give solid hints about R+L=J. So far they have only given subtle nods that were directed more towards readers than viewers.

ToJ is the primary season why readers are waiting for the arrival of Howland Reed. Currently viewers may not even remember that he was mentioned by Jojen on the show, let alone knowing why he is such a big deal. Introducing HR without showing ToJ first would mean for viewers, he will be just another new character.

While I generally agree with you, we're dealing with a world that has a massive, intimidating amount of backstory that is incredibly difficult to convey on film (or digital video, yeah yeah). Sometimes it's really just weak to have one character tell a story to another - for example, how many non-book-readers do you think remember much about Littlefinger's telling of the Tourney at Harrenhal? I'd also refer to the recent movie adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (which, for the record, I thought was great). In the original BBC miniseries, they actually flash back to a portrayal of an important meeting between two characters, whereas in the movie one of said characters simply describes it years later. In my opinion, the flashback was far more successful than the story both in terms of narrative weight and lasting impression. Of course the show has the benefit of the "previously on" section, but those can only be so long.

I actually also don't believe that the casting call is for Arthur Dayne...but a ToJ flashback would be totally reasonable (and kind of amazing). Lots of you have a much better recollection of the books than I do...but isn't the ToJ basically the only real flashback in the books other than Maggie the Frog, which they've now set precedent by including in the show? I don't think it'd be out of character at all.

If this isn't Arthur Dayne, it's definitely not a character we've heard of yet. The description just doesn't fit any other character we've met.

And ignoring the whole "Best Swordsman in Europe" thing, my perfect Arthur Dayne has always been Michael Fassbender.

The Fass would be an incredible addition, but sadly his monster dong would be too much for D&D to handle. They'd be conflicted as they can not show it in his one scene, which is a battle. It will haunt them that they had Fassbender in front of a camera and couldn't put to film, the penis that got him snubbed from the oscars.

On a serious note. I think fancasting Arthur is the most fun. You can get away with Oded Fehr as easily as Michael Fassbender.

Maybe they'd find a way to resolve it, though, like having this "paragon of knighthood" flash it at Ned while making rude finger signals during the battle.

Yes, I agree about Arthur, because Dorne is very diverse and Dayne's age was very neutral (I'm not sure there was a specified one, but maybe around 30 something) and he wasn't, as far as I remember, described as belonging to any specific ethnicity either.

the dayne's look like valyrians, and they actually might be proto valyrians since they've been in westeros for thousands of years before the valyrian freehold even rose to power in essos.

can you elaborate on this? i actually like kazinsky even though he looks like he'd make more sense as domeric with him an iwan rheon practically looking like twins.
