Would it not? Slynt had been leading 2,000 Gold Cloaks, surely he has more experience of leadership than Jon Snow does. The fact that Slynt, the son of a butcher rose to a postion that was usually reserved for high ranking nobility(Daemon Targaryen, Addam Marbrand, Manly Stokeworth) shows that he has some capabilities.

That logic just doesn't hold, incompetent people do sometimes get themselves into high positions.

And some times characters who are despised by the fanbase are competent at their jobs.

I'd say it would be pretty hard for an incompetent son of a butcher to rise to that level.

Depends on where his competency lay. Frankly he showed himself far better at brown nosing and corruption than actually leading men, strategy, or interpersonal communication.

Well yeah, isn't that kind of thing going to happen in a book told through POV characters. As neither Slynt was a POV character or had a POV character following him around and cheer leading his every decision we don't really get to see his competency levels.

Slynt is a minor character and is looked down by the nobles of Kings Landing because of his class and later by Jon (and Sam) for his involvement in Ned's death.

He certainly abused his leadership position, but a butchers son rising from from guard to captain to Lord Commander must have had some positive attributes to rise so high.

Given his general interactions *with* POV  characters, before and after he was made a lord, I'm guessing those positive attributes were, at most, follow orders from superiors and spread some money around.

He was most certainly a moron, and that's apparent even without Jon's extremely biased POV.
