A google search for GRRM Mountain Minions led me to the essay. This section in particular: "I admire Tolkien greatly. His books had enormous influence on me. And the trope he established – the idea of the Dark Lord and his Evil Minions – in the hands of lesser writers over the years and decades has not served the genre well. It has been beaten to death." I wasn't sure if the passage shed light on what/who the Mountain Minions are. It probably doesn't at all. Could the Mountain Minions be all those writers who churn out your typical light vs. dark, good vs. evil type story? Having read GRRM, who includes ALL the grey I could see it being that.
