Darkstar POV

Oh I hope we do. It has the potential to be amazing.

My sentiments exactly. So much has been said about him that it could go soooo many places...

I feel like we are in for a massive shock via a new POV person. Darkstar would just be awesome. Could provide so much up to now hidden info on House Dayne. We know so little.

It would be cool, but I don't think so. GRRM has said we are getting no new POV chapter, which leaves the prologue and epilogue.

GRRM said at some point that Jeyne Westerling would be in the prologue, and since she is currently in the Riverlands being escorted back to the Westerlands by Jaime's men, I can't see Darkstar showing up there. I think the prologue POV will be someone like Addam Marbrand.

Since this is the second to last book, I feel like the epilogue in TWoW needs to be insane, and I feel like Darkstar cant provide anything interesting enough to be the epilogue POV. I feel like it will have something to do with the Others.

Darkstar is one most clumsy characterizations in the entire asoiaf series. So sorry, no.

Darkstar was introduced because without the five year gap, Ned Dayne was too young to carry out that part of the plot.

So reckon Obareo will take him out and that will be it?

Hard to say. The PoV there is Areo Hotah. My take is more or less. Darkstar steals Dawn, Hotah kills him, he goes to Starfall to give it back and ends learning some very important bit of information. He goes back to Doran at the same time the later declared for Aegon... etc

Maybe Doran charges him to find Jon, maybe not, but at some point Dawn should fall in Jon's hands and Hotah may play a more important role on that.

I really hope once this series is all wrapped up that GRRM releases a 'this is what would have happened before the 5 year gap mess up'. Chars like Darkstar could have done so much more than maybe cut off an ear, steal a sword and die. LOL IDK.

I agree re the clumsy characterization.  The Daynes are heavily based in Camelot symbolism, and I guess? we needed a Mordred figure late in the game, but he's just so obvious, and that name!  And 'i am of the night' lol.

But he could still be really interesting to the plotline, just because he is a Dayne.  And a POV from him that could help clear up some of the mysteries of that family would be welcome, at least to me!

To be honest I'm not really sure what the point of his character is anyway. According to Doran, Darkstar is the most dangerous man in Dorne. I'd like to think he isn't simply talking about his skill at arms, because one man who is good with a sword doesn't seem that dangerous, so maybe he knows some kind of dangerous information.

I could easily be wrong here, but I got the impression that Darkstar was created because of the change in story. If GRRM kept his '5 year timeskip' idea then I think Edric Dayne would've played a much bigger part, and there wouldn't have been a need for Darkstar.

I hope we see more, and a bigger role for Darkstar. As little of him as we have had he is one of my favorites chars.

Its difficult because neither Balon Swann or Obara Sand are POV characters. I'd like to think he has more of a role to play other than maiming a little girl, but for that to happen he needs to end up near a POV character. He could try to steal Dawn, and that's how we end up getting more information on Starfall and the Daynes. Who knows, he might've been there when Eddard Stark returned Dawn to Starfall, and we might get more information on that time.

I'm not sure.  George has been playing with Camelot and Fisher King allegories since the beginning and most major characters have been covered except for Mordred, who does come in late and f*cks everything up in the end of that saga.  He's just so obvious. Brienne is very much a Galahad figure, for instance, and has all that twilight and grail symbolism, but George made him a woman with realistic character preoccupations, and I've come to really like her and her arc when at first she bored me to tears.  So Darkstar might surprise us too, who knows?

Anyway, Edric was just too nice to have become Mordred even after five years.  He'll play Bedivere in relation to the sword, I expect, but in relation to George's own mythology, doesn't he remind you of Egg?

I think the information on Arianne's plans and the real way Arys Oakheart died makes him a very dangerous person. He is the one with the questionable loyalties in Arianne's little group. I think there's a good chance he was the one who informed on her.

For my money, though, I think he's completely innocent of the charges laid against him. There is one character who is never mentioned when chaos breaks out and that's Spotted Sylva. Maybe the Martells aren't the only ones out for Lannister blood. Whatever Aron Santagar was to Sylva, he was a family member and he got his head bashed in during the Bread Riots. Those riots happened right after Myrcella boarded a ship for Dorne.

That said, I hope Darkstar comes with less cheese in the next book. He won't be a POV character, GRRM did say there will be none of those anymore. Hotah is the only POV character left in Dorne now. Hopefully, he will be more open with his thoughts now that he will be far away from Doran. His chapters were on the very minimal information side. I think the confrontation has the potential to be very interesting.

Ah of course, I completely forgot that Areo Hotah is joining Obara and Balon Swann, I don't really read TWoW sample chapters much. This suddenly makes alot more sense at least, I was trying to figure out how the hunt for Darkstar would play out without a POV character.

To be honest out of this whole thing I'm mostly just looking forward to finding out more on House Dayne.

You're probably right, I was thinking that if they did do the 5 year timeskip that maybe Edric would've stayed with Stoneheart. I imagine spending 5 years hunting down anyone with relations to Houses Lannister and Frey, whether innocent or not, would've damaged his psyche quite a bit.

To be honest I don't really see him having any major part in the story anymore. I could see there being a throwaway line about him returning to Starfall to be its Lord or something.

That's actually in ADWD, The Watcher chapter when Doran dispatched his minions on their missions.

Absolutely. That's something I am looking forward to as well. And that Dayne family tree. I like how we have 100 Freys, but no word whatsoever about the branches of the tree I am most curious about.

While we’re on the subject of ‘no new POV characters’ all I’ve been able to find is people saying ‘GRRM said there will be no POV characters’ except for one person saying it was a quote from a convention in 2007?

Surely there must be more evidence for people to be so sure about it?

Ah, its been quite a while since I read the books, so I looked up Areo Hotah on the asoiaf wiki and it made no mention of him travelling with Obara in the ADwD section. I could only find it on the Obara page, and that only brings him up on TWoW segment.
