Eurovision 2023: Liverpool (May 9, 11, Grand Final 13)

Austria had some nice ideas and tried something different.

I think I liked Spain best so far. France second.

Loreen's aesthetics and poses always remind me of very early Kate Bush. Which is a good thing.

No idea ab a chatroom

Oh, Albania!

When I first saw you I was hoping for for some Eastern power folk drama of the good old Eurovision times... alas.

Italy is kind of sweet. He's selling it.

Estonia: great vloice. Song is growing on me.

Finland: It's fine. I'm not as impressed as everyone else. Particularly the cha cha cha part. Extra points for original costume though

Czechia: lovely voices, nice chorus

Yeah, Ireland didn't get past the semis.

This is the Eurovision of interesting choruses and generic rest-of-song.

Moldova: mostly boring

Ukraine: nice but not my cup of tea.

UK - wait no, who was that? (ETA: Norway) great beginning... Yeah, I like it. It's fun. Also great costume.

Germany: They're trying. Quite trying.

Actually, not as bad as I feared. Pretentious lyrics.

UK: boring

I'm almost caught up. It's a weaker year.

But fun shall now commence (to quote Seven of Nine), with the best part of it!

Slightly further to the south. ;) Slovenia.

(Although I did live in Austria for some time.)

Ah, your forum name fooled me.

Slovenia dudes poured all their heart/ soul out.

The Switzerland singer was quite nervous, I think otherwise he's got a beautiful voice.

France, marry me?
Loreen, ditto.

My vote for worst act: Serbia
Runners-up: Germany, Australia, Moldova

OK, NOW the fun begins!

I don't like the main host very much.

The allure of Israel's song must have eluded me.

Same here, as well as Italy and kind of Sweden as well. As usual, I have no idea how to understand the jury votes.

I protest on behalf of France. Evidemment!

Also, the way they award points nowadays has taken all the suspense away.

Spain, wtf?! They got even less public votes than Germany or Australia! Talk about the lowest common denominator...

Second to the last for the UK… piss off!

Actually I do kind of understand it. I think it’s a really good tune, I heard it on the radio the other day and thought it was far too well produced to be on the standard pop station. I’ve listened to it loads and I really like it, something I have never said about a UK entry before, even Sam Ryder.

Maybe that is part of the problem, it’s very British. It is cynical, the lyrics don’t translate, the attitude is all wrong for the contest which celebrates overblown emotion rather than slightly nasty resentment.

Its a song that works really well in the UK charts, but not in a Eurovision Song Contest where there are plenty of similar kinds of songs and this didn’t stand out.

Oh well. Sweden were deserved winners though, almost everyone else was rubbish
