I believe the stance on abortion is that Objectivism-ly it's okay for two reasons: the baby is leeching off the mother (socialism FTL) and because as a creator, you may do whatever the hell you want to do with your creations.
Nah, Goodkind doesn't like abortion, even in cases of rape. He makes that explicitly clear in Verna's speeches against that priestess who got pregnant from being gang-raped in book two, where she tells him she should keep the child instead of punishing an "innocent life".
Even Tairy himself has said that you don't need to save a child from drowning if you don't fancy getting your clothes wet. I don't think the mythical "emotions" of "other people" weigh heavily on his thoughts.
Wow. Not that such a thing is really out there for Tairy, but, do you have a citation on that one?

I don't know Goodkind's particular stance on abortion. His protagonists have all been anti, absolutely, but from an O-ist's perspective, it's not the same thing. I did a quick google search and came up with this page with direct quotes from Ayn Rand.

You can find the entire interview here

The river discussion is a little over halfway down the page.

Ha, that interview gave me a good laugh on a slow workday.

"I wrote the last 80 pages in one sitting, total stream of consciousness. I never re-read it, I just sent it off to the publisher. What you read in “Confessor”, the last 80 pages of the book, is what came up on my computer in one sitting, no editing, nothing. That's a decade worth of planning and just writing it out. It's raw Goodkind"

Honestly I assumed he never re-read any of his writing

If there's torture, almost rape, or chicks in leather, he re-reads it, lest he forget what real heroes fight [s]for[/s] against.

It's we lemmings who fight against. Richard only fights for.
Indeed. Was desperately trying to find the middleground, only to realize there is ONLY BLACK AND WHITE. Can't...can't pick a side...on the one hand, porn...I like porn! but but but...on the other, bitch-slapping, coke snorting producers... enabling drug lords... a party to murder... what to do?!?

*passes out*

Goodkind didn't use an editor on his latest books with Tor? But the guy's got dyslexia! I don't know how severe it is, but if I had dyslexia, I'd want an editor to go over my stuff with a fine-toothed comb to make sure I'd spelled things right.

I'm not surprised, since he does seem as crazy as Anne Rice sometimes.

He likely had an editor for his books, but probably more for the sake of grammar/punctuation/spelling than anything else. He doesn't seem to fancy editorial oversight and doesn't want anyone telling him how his story should read.

Sure, most people want their world created perfect in seven days, but most authors are willing to trust their professionals to tell 'em when something doesn't jive.

Actually I can think of 3 books in the series that should have been edited out completely and I did not read the last four...I suppose there is a least one of those that should be edited out....

There was lots of wasted space in the first book.

The whole section about Richard building a house (because, you know, Tairy built houses...) and then the Mud People reject it 'cause they're savages..

Or the whole "hunting dragon eggs" scenerio where Richard gets stuck in a tunnel...

Or the fifty pages of boring magic torture that could have been cut down by two thirds or more -- but it was "essential", according to the Yeard...

Tairy prose in general is awkward, and in need of a lot of trimming. This is barring cutting out whole scenes, mind you. This is on the word and phrase level. Tairy likes to make up little things like "sharing smile" that he can stick to over and over again when he feels he has to describe something but is too lazy to go into detail.

Actually, kuen, I think I'm gonna disagree on the Yeard's part. For whatever message he was trying to pass over the Mud People (I think "They are death choosing idiots" suffices), the whole "I build you houses" "We're stupid we hate houses" thing is important.
But yes, severe need of an editor does exist.

I'm not saying the actual idea was bad (low-culture resisting technology), it just went ON and ON. Plus, I think this was the first instance of the backwoods Rahl suddenly showing expertise in something without prior experience (he might have been a master carpenter back in the westland, but I don't think it was elucidated beforehand. It has been ten years from when i read that novel, though, so I could be wrong...)

He is the Seeker Of {For} Truth...therefore not like average man...of course he can build a building that has shingles to keep out the rain...even though he has never picked up a hammer in his life...

I figured that too. He just gets random insight into all sorts of other things, so why not building houses? He might have to build a house to save his life some day, after all. When you're being written by Tairy, there is no guarantee, and every time is go time.

Makes you wonder...

If Dick's life was at risk and he needed to produce the greatest possible Fantasy novel, would he end up with a Sword of Truth novel or would he get A Game of Thrones?

I know being a war wizard gives him unlimited potential, but I still don't think that's enough to not write like the author who's writing you.

I'll take That Boggles My Mind for 800, Alex.

I'm pretty sure there was a reference to Dick building his own house before going to see the Mud People. Had he not had experience, his natural gifts would have produced marble palaces for them.

On the subject of Dick writing a novel, same kind of thing. If he blindfolded himself in front of a computer he would accidentally produce A Game of Thrones.

Now, a million Dicks in front of a million typewriters....

And that, my friends, is the "Behind-The-Scenes" look at the production of the hit anime "Bible Black".

:lmao:

Also, a quick question on the peace rally, assuming SoT was set during/similar to the Middle Ages, were there peace rallies then? I know peasants or the common folk revolted or protested againts taxes, but against war?
