Here is the thing. Right now there are no known cases of Vampires biting people. If suddenly we found out Vampires are real could we really freak out about it, when there are no cases of them doing anything? They could say that they have been living on wild animal blood all this time and what could anyone say about it?

Also don't forget that Bill mentioned the power of influence (glamor, I think he called it). Maybe some Vampires can do it through the TV screen and are using it to keep people from getting too violent.

What I don't get is why aren't you ranting about Sookie. She can read minds. You know how much money could be making doing cons and stuff? Here she is a waitress though. Isn't that as unrealistic as the vampire shit? Why do you have a problem suspending your disbelief with some of the fantastical elements of the story, but not others?

ETA: For me the idea of there being vampires is as unbelievable as the idea that they would be accepted into society, or that someone can read minds, or whatever. The concept of "realism" just doesn't equate into my enjoyment of the series. I've accepted the fact that it isn't realistic. None of it is. That is why picking and choosing the stuff you find unrealistic seems absurd to me.
I have to agree with what Ken says about Sookie. She can read minds. why is she waiting tables other than as a plot device ? ( and a pretty bad one). Sheee-it! She could be cleaning out casino's at the blackjack tables with no fucking effort. Thats just a legal venue she could pursue that wouldn't involve having drunk guys pawing her ass while she schleeps drinks and bad food. She even made a comment about women making a grand a night screwing vampires while she was busting her ass for 10 bucks an hour plus tips. If she is so stupid as to not be able to figure out how to use her 'talent' to her advantage ...... well, maybe she IS that stupid.

I have to admit that I am losing interest too. The pacing is getting horrible. The way they revealed that Jason wasnt the murderer was like a premature ejaculation ( not that I would KNOW what that really felt like. LOL) Same with Bill kicking the total shit outta the Rattrays, if he is so badass, how did they have him weak as a new born kitty last week ? Is he just as stupid as Sookie and let them get the drop on him ? Why did he kill them over Sookie, but not seek revenge after they tried to drain him ? or did all that happen in the same night ? Almost impossible to tell. And I wasnt paying that much attention, why did Jason's slutty gf tie him to the bed ?

This went from a B+ to a D- in nothing flat.
What you see as attempts at preachiness I see as attempts at humor. When the pastor was on TV spewing bigotry I wasn't offended because he was right to be bigoted. Instead I thought the absurdity of the rest of society treating him like a bigot was funny. I don't think the show is trying to make the preachy point that you think it is. I think it is trying to be absurd. Sort of like this:
If humor is the objective, its failing pretty badly at that as well.

How the hell does Lex Luther ever get the drop on Superman? Simple. While Superman has some amazing powers he also has super weakness that can be exploited. Same with Vampires apparently. It looked to me like silver makes them very weak, and the Ratterys took advantage of that weakness to get the drop on him.

It happened on different nights. Why would someone not seek revenge but then turn around and kill to save someone they liked? Maybe they aren't the vengeful type. Bill seems like a fundamentally decent guy who will kill to save someone but not out of revenge. I'm not sure there is an answer there specifically.

Pretty much just seemed like she doesn't like his philandering ways and was taking a little revenge on him.

It seems very simple to me. She blames herself for her parents death. She fears her own power more than anything else, including vampires. That's the reason she isn't a psy-whore.
Think of it as like a rich person who is ashamed of the assumption that they have never had to work for anything -- so they go out of their way to pretend not to be rich -- work a normal job and so forth.

Sure, when the chips are down, she'll use the power -- she knows she always has that golden parachute. But it's burned her more than it's helped. So she isn't going to use it unless she is sorely tempted.

I think a similar situation may be going on with Bill the Vampire. I think that one of the messages here may be that a healthy diet of fear and self-loathing is good for the soul.

I thought this one was better than the pilot. Actually, I think I like the opening credits far more than the 50 minutes that come after them. HBO's credit sequences are always top notch, but this one is cool as all hell. Good song, too. I'd put it up there with Six Feet Under, Carnivale and Rome.

The show is still too "haw haw" hamhanded with the funny and the broad, broad mack truck sized Bayou/Southern stereotypes. But it's finding some sort of pace.

If anything, the Vampire Rights stuff on CNN looks to be more interesting than the mawkish Southern Soap Opera we get from Sookie and her pack of wacky stereotype family and friends. I find myself much more interested in watching a show about Vampires making moves in DC, prepping for pundit shows, lobbying for votes, trying to keep their fringe element in check for good PR.

If anything, that would be something I hadn't seen before. Seeing badly rendered quirky rednecks have steamy sex with vampires in a Bayou that somehow isn't infested with mosquitos is pretty dull to me.

And yeah, the cliffhanger thing has gotten old already.

I wonder what would happen to mosquitoes if they bit vampires...I'd think some super mosquitoes and they just don't want to go down that road in the show. :(

They need to have one scene where Bill slaps a mosquito and Sookie looks at him disapprovingly and says "Hypocrite".

I don't usually go for this vampire stuff. But, since it's in the proximity of Entourage, I gave it a chance, and it's been pretty enjoyable so far. Never having seen Buffy, or read anything by Anne Rice, I'm fairly untainted by the genre expectations.

Wow...that was complete shit. I don't think there's a single character who hasn't reached the point of cringe-worthy yet...cept maybe the black girl (since after the first episode anyway), which is all kinds of ironic. I don't think this thing is long for my Tivo list. Very quickly approaching unwatchable.

Funny. Linda and I quite liked it. There's a delightful, self-aware sleaziness to it that's just fun. And we learn that Tru Blood is not, in fact, all that it's billed to be. Plus some deeper hints of vampire politics.

Good stuff but obviously mileage varies.

EHK, this means that you can just go over to commenting on Entourage. ;)

I've been watching it since the beginning. It's enjoyable. Not nearly on the same level as Rome, but I like it for what it is.

A few thoughts I have:

I LIKED the opening scene in the pilot episode. Lesson to take home: the vampire is not the pale goth looking guy with the excess jewelry and the drippy accent. The vampire is the guy who just looks like the everyday Joe.

There are so many World of Darkness similarities in this that it's funny. We have "ghouls" and "blood dolls". Apparently some vampires can change into bats, but not all. Even a reference that Bill "sleeps in the ground" during the day. There is a hierarchy among vampires based on age. According to the previews, it looks like next week we get to visit Elysium and talk to the Prince (Eric?). Yet in the little blurb HBO did about vampires and inspirations for the show, the World of Darkness was never mentioned.

Oh, and from reading upthread, apparently we have fae and probably shapeshifters at some point. (I have not read the books).

It is unsubtle (the social commentary is like a club to the head) and definitely has the "first season jitters", but I'll keep watching.

I'm losing respect for the show at an epic pace now.

Why, with all the fucking and sucking thats going on, did the show lose the balls to show the interracial sex between Tara and Sam ? A total wuss cop-out ass move. If the actress or actor are somehow refusing to do nudity, they are on the wrong fucking show
