[ADwD Spoilers]Favorite POV in ADWD

I don't know why people like Theon's PoV so much. Three main strikes against it:

1) it was like horror-porn, and pretty disgusting and hard to take for me (I guess I have delicate sensibilities)?

2) I really don't give a crap about the war for the north other than how it will ultimately affect the fight against The Others. Since most of the Reek/Theon PoV's is just about how much he's afraid of the Boltons I don't care. I mean, I want them to die but please just kill them already.

3) Like the other PoV's there was no resolution to this plotline. Theon got away I guess but we don't even know if Stannis is dead, Roose is dead, Ramsey is dead, etc.

My fave PoV overall was probably Bran: all 3 chapters of it. :P

For the main 4 PoV's, Dany was my favorite. At least the last 2 chapters were awesome (though they could have been awesome-er), though the first 8 were kinda frustrating.

- Theon: As many have mention the most dramatic satifying arc on the book.

- Bran: Tense, imaginative and sad. Some of the best high fantasy writing in the series.

- Davos: As usual make great use of Davos everyman POV and have some great detail from post war North. Also starts Manderly towards winning the Red Viper of Dorne award for best small supporting carachter.

- Jon: The best of the 3 main POVs and stands well among the many studies of leadership througout the series. Gets knocked down a bit by a somewhat rushed ending.

- Connington/Selmy: The 2 best new POVs, both handling very well a mixture of history and action.

Honorably mention to Kevan's epilogue which made up for the lack of KL action by itself.

Overall the only POV arcs that do little for me were Victarion's (but they have more lively incident than his chapters from AFFC) and Dany's (which do suffer for her being too passive).

Theon's hands down. I'm still trying to get over them actually. I often felt like I was slogging through other POV's just to get back to him. His story was easily the most gripping and so well done. I was often so anxious I had to pause and brace myself before reading on. And I admit, my heart broke for him several times and I was rooting for him by the end of his first chapter - despite the monumentalness of his past douchebagery. Well played, GRRM.

Then probably Davos, Jon, and Arya.

Davos chapters are just refreshing because he's such a good guy. But seriously, way to get me REALLY EXCITED and then leave me hanging.

Jon gets free points because he hangs around with people I like (like Edd, Tormund, Val and the like). He's also making some big decisions and you could really feel him trying to grow up. [i'm going to miss ridiculously angsty teenager Jon Snow, but I know it's time to move on.] And it was fun to go 'wtg, Jon!' one minute and then 'wth are you doing?!' the next.

Arya's were a nice change of pace and engaging because I really want to know how far she goes with this before she hopefully decides to be Arya Stark again. It was also fun to figure out how she made her kill.

The most disappointing chapters for me were Dany and Tyrion.

In Dany's case I just didn't care about Slaver's Bay that much. I could have gotten the idea that she's in a royal mess and making bad choices in a lot fewer words. I basically skimmed her chapters going 'blah blah blah she's in a bad way and is really into daario'. Pretty sure I didn't miss much.

As for Tyrion, at first I was fairly irritated that his usual wit seemd to have completely left him. But then I realized that what I was probably seeing was the effect killing his father had on him. I'd be pretty shaken up too I guess, but I wouldn't make people watch me play board games while I worked through it. I think he's back on his feet by the end, but again, he could have gotten there in a lot fewer words.

Based on my first reading, Quentyn was my favorite POV. For me, he had an utterly heartbreaking arc. The weight of his father, of his family, of his deceased friends, of Dorne, all led to his tragic ending, and yet through it all he was the dutiful son and prince. Just thinking about it now gets me choked up.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Sometimes I wonder if some people wouldn't know good storytelling if it struck them in the face.

Melisandre: It was interesting to see that Mel wasn't so omnipotent as we all thought. She makes mistakes, has a highly dubious background as a slave/prostitute (Melony! Lot 7!), and to top it off, relies on some cheap trickery to fool the ignorant; her power not being quite strong enough to shed her potions and illusions completely. She clearly has an agenda, what with saving Mance and her general attitude towards Jon; "He doesn't want me, and he doesn't love me; he wants to use me. Good."

I'm really hoping we get a few more chapters from Mel's POV in Winter.

Hands down Davos. I'm a bit biased though, he IS my second favorite character. Second only to Syrio. *sigh* too bad the former First Blade is dead.

Syrio, yes, I agree, a very compelling character, and is he really gone! I think he will meet Arya again.

Honestly, I enjoyed almost all of the POV's in Dance. I thought Theon and Jon in particular had fantastic chapters throughout (excluding Jon's last chapter). Bran and Davos had their best chapters of the series which contributed to a fantastic start to the book. I also enjoyed Tyrion's early chapters with Aegon and Connington, though his latter chapters were quite dull. Melisandre and Connington's brief appearances as POV's were awesome and extremely informative. Cersei and Jaime's were entertaining but felt out of place. Victarion and Barristan were badass and helped liven up an otherwise flat ending to the Meereen storyline. Speaking of endings, Kevan's epilogue was one of my favorite chapters of the series.

1. Jon- loved the wildling story at the Wall and his interactions with Stannis, Tormund, Alys, Mel

2. Theon- goosebumps in every chapter

3. Prologue with Varamyr

4. Bran

5. Davos- the little engine that could=)

Didn't care for:

Victarion

Essos chapters (with the exceptions of the flying Drogo chapter, Tyrion's 2nd sons chapter and Arya's 2 chapters)

1) Arya's few guest appearances. She's just pure awesomeness.

2) Jon: Finally became interested in him.

3) Theon: I like seeing him vindicate himself in some way.

Still don't care for Dany and haven't for probably even a second. Tyrion was a let down, he had been one of my favorites until now.

The northern POVs were what elevated the book. If it had just been the Essos stuff it would've been a slog worse than the slowest parts of Feast. So ... Jon, Theon, Asha, Melisandre, Davos and Bran. Theon's chapters were overall the best, probably, taken together, the best writing of the series.

Tyrion's chapters probably had the most let-down in terms of potential. I had a hard time getting into Connington, Quentyn and Victarion's chapters. Barristan's POV salvaged the Slaver's Bay chapters, and Dany's were just frustrating and awful.

Arya by far, she is the only original POV that has maintained a good storyline and quality throughout the series. Some of the better ones in ADwD are new ones: Davos, Selmy, etc. Whenever I read those, part me can't help but feel like it is just wasn't needed and get back to the story.
