swarmsea
I'm reading "A Game of Thrones" and I'm halfway through but there's one thing that sort of pisses me of.The edition I have is Harper Voyager paperback, with maps from "The North", "The South", "The Land Beyond the Wall" and "The Lands of Summer Sea".When I started to read this book, I checked out these maps from time to time, but I'm confused with Daenerys chapters where it seems that there is no map about places where she is at the moment, sort to speak.I also have bought "A Clash of Kings" and "A Storm of Swords: Steel and Snow", and I just checked quickly through them and it seems that there could be possibly missing map as well, all thought of course there are two new maps in these books than "A Game of Thrones".I'm sort of confused where to look perhaps for "Narrow Sea", "Dothraki Sea"?...Maybe someone can point out my possible laziness and point me right through these maps, or if it is some kind of an error, could anyone tell me the reason why it seems that there are missing maps (parts) and if so, where to look for them? ckal
I forget what the publisher is for the books I have, but I really like them. I have two maps taking up a full page each; one are the lands to the north, one are the lands to the south, with a bit of overlap around the neck and trident areas towards the middle of the map. I don't have anything in regards to a map of essos (the continent across the narrow sea where dany is) but I could be of some assistance here because I've looked at other more complete maps on the Internet. The continent of westeros is the one main one here where everything aside from the dany chapters takes place. The narrow sea sits between westeros and essos. Essos is directly east of westeros. The dothraki sea is actually not a sea of water at all. It is a huge span of land somewhere in the middle of dothraki lands (in essos) populated by tall grasses. Hope this helps. I would also run a google image search for a song of ice and fire maps. I'm sure you could pull up a good one there.
TyrionFan82
I got the hardcovers of AGOT and ACOK and didn't notice it I think either, I'll have to recheck them today. I was thinking the same thing the other day though.

ckal
Your welcome, anytime. I agree it seems a little strange, but it's possible they weren't included at the time because maybe he didn't want to reveal more areas in essos or even have it all completely mapped out himself yet. Or maybe he just didn't think that for the first book it was necessary yet. I don't know for sure but just a thought.
Lady Lilac
I think the main reason GRRM didn't include a map of Essos in the first books was because Dany didn't really move that much as opposed to Westeros where lords after lords keep popping up and fighting all over the place. So he probably just waited for Dany to move around more so he could include the new locations when they became relevant,
Arya Nymeria Stark
I found a pretty good map of the world...http://images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/23200000/The-World-a-song-of-ice-and-fire-23248298-850-651.jpgUnfortunately, it doesn't show anything east of the Red Wastes. Werthead
The current HarperVoyager editions have really gone all over the place with the maps and really confused things. They simply republished all of the existing maps (pre-ADWD) even when there is no need for them in the book.To be clear, there are a grand total of five maps from the books:1) A map of Westeros2) A map of the city of King's Landing3) A map showing the Lands Beyond the Wall in detail4) A map of Slaver's Bay and Valyria (the map called 'Lands of the Summer Sea' in the UK edition)5) A map of the Free CitiesThe problem is that Map 5 only appears in Book 5 (ADWD) and hasn't been used in the new editions of AGoT, which is annoying as the places on it - Pentos, Qohor, the western tip of the Dothraki Sea - all actually appear in the book. Maps 3 & 4 are completely unnecessary for AGoT. Map 4 confuses things totally as Slaver's Bay is mentioned in AGoT, but it does not appear (Lhazar, where Dany is right at the end of the book, is upriver from Meereen). There is no official, canon map of the Dothraki Sea or anywhere further east at the moment. This will be remedied in literally just a week's time when HBO release the first official, canon map of the entire eastern continent. There will also be a collection of more detailed maps of the entire (known) world published in October called The Lands of Ice and Fire, sanctioned by GRRM.At the moment, this is the closest we have to a good map showing all the locations visited in the novels. It's non-canon, but according to GRRM is not too far off the real situation.I found a pretty good map of the world...http://images4.fanpo...298-850-651.jpgUnfortunately, it doesn't show anything east of the Red Wastes. That map is non-canon. Nice, but an old fan map which has been supersceded by the release of the official map of the Free Cities in ADWD.
ckal
Werthead-That's great news in regards to HBO releasing that map, I had no idea. Could you do us a favor and link it here when it comes out in case we miss it?Thanks for the news and info.

Ran
No links to OiL's maps, please. He's taken them down for a reason, and we'd like to respect that, which is why they can no longer be found in the Citadel gallery as they were before.
Arya Nymeria Stark
So I found ANOTHER good map showing Westeros (with the names of the leading families of each castle), Essos (east to part of the Shadow Lands), and even another continent, Sothoryos (though I have no idea what, if anything, it has to do with the story).http://kevinhatch.com/media/kh-asoiaf.pdf

This map is most useful for ACoK, ASoS and ADWD and depicts the lands beyond the Wall.2: The North (from ADWD): This map is useful for all books and depicts the North of Westeros.3: The South (from ADWD): This map is useful for all books and depicts the South of Westeros.4: King's Landing (from ACoK): This map is useful for all books and depicts the city of King's Landing.5: The Free Cities (from ADWD): This map is most useful for AGoT, AFFC and ADWD and depicts the Free Cities of western Essos, including where Dany's journey starts in AGoT.6: Slaver's Bay (from ADWD): This map is most useful for ASoS and ADWD and depicts Slaver's Bay, the ruins of Valyria and the city of Meereen. This map combines the existing canon maps with speculation. The canon areas and speculative non-canon areas are made clear on the map. This map depicts Daenerys Targaryen's journey from AGoT until the end of ADWD. The only non-canon element is the precise location of Qarth, which is not likely to be a huge variance.Any other map you see on the Internet (including the iOS app map) which varies from the above is non-canon, usually dating from before GRRM provided maps of Essos. Whilst historically interesting, they are no longer valid and should not be relied on for providing useful information. In October 2012 Bantam are releasing The Lands of Ice and Fire, which will feature the only canon maps of the world, and the first canon map depicting the Jade Sea, Asshai and Braavos. That collection will superscede pretty much everything else in canonicity.
Arya Nymeria Stark
Does anyone know of any other city maps aside from the one of King's Landing? I've been wanting to see (detailed?) castle/city maps of other major locations such as Riverrun, Winterfell and Castle Black. Do any exist? DirePenguin
Again, a nice fan map, but strictly non-canon and long since outdated by other official maps.Let's make clear the maps that are canon:Great maps! I noticed the lines are really jaggy, like there's no anti aliasing. Any idea why is it like that? Are these originally pdf?
Lucazzy
I for one can't wait for the map book. Does anyone know the confirmed locations for the map book? Obviously Westeros, all the major towns and castles being featured, along as a bit of lore for them all. I would buy that in a heartbeat. But some maps for Essos are also nice. Crown
I think this is an official map (from HBO) of Westeros and Essos. http://i.cdn.hbo.com/custom-assets/enrichments/series/game-of-thrones/r3/images/map/s2/maps/worldview_regular.jpg It lacks the names of many prominent locations, tho'. mor2
You can find list of all the official released maps from the books and latest one from Tv show in Portal:Geography (left down corner). Also ser mountain goat extension of tear's map, linked above is great, though if you are like me you might get drawn in by the scale of it and all the locations ;)
Sweet Summer Child
I always liked that GRRM didn't include a map (of Essos) in aGoT. There were few enough places that I didn't seem to need it, and it allowed me to use my mind much more.
