Re-Cast Game of Thrones with actors from any era.

Ha! I seem to remember your posts having teeth too.

Just like yours sometimes do. That's why your help would be more than welcomed. And, seeing that we pretty much have the same taste in movies, and how in love with and grounded in literature you are, I thought the discussions I participated in might interest you. You know, now that the TV show is in hiatus and topics are mostly focused on novels exclusively, I can't help but feel that ASOIAF is largely misunderstood and unappreciated, even here. It may be Martin's fault, as in, there's perhaps something deeply wrong in the way he writes the series; like, perhaps he should put some more emphasis on the themes he's trying to convey, instead of exercising subtlety and cryptic writing all the time. Maybe I'm the problem, if I'm reading too much into the novels, or keep misunderstanding other posters and/or the nature of forums discussions. Maybe it's the shallow nature of all-consuming pop culture, that made people generally uninterested in any material that may be deeper and more rewarding than it's face value suggests. Maybe it's all combined, or something else entirely. But, the feeling is there.

P.S. "Bravo" in Cyrilic (capital letters version, for the bigger impact):

Б Р А В О !

Just in case you need it again. Who knows, it might happen.

Hmmm... I don't know why the Cyrillic only shows up inside a quote... (I lived in Sochi for a year BTW)

As for your quest to bring depth and philosophy to the discourse over at General, I'm afraid you may find yourself tilting at windmills (There's a good discussion- comparing Dunk & Egg (or Brienne & Pod) to Don Quixote and Sancho Panza).

The proliferation of topics sort of lends itself to drive-by posts, and I find myself just trying to make jokes or minor provocations rather than discussions of much depth.

My interest in the show forum stems partly from my interest in screen adaptation and writing in general (I'm in the middle of both editing my wife's first novel and writing a screen adaptation of it) I think I'll probably start avoiding the forum just to get out of the time-suck.

Back on topic:

I was trying to think of who Robert De Niro could play, and it came to me that he would make a tremendous Stannis.

I was trying to think of who Robert De Niro could play, and it came to me that he would make a tremendous Stannis.

De Niro, in my humble opinion, can play anyone, from Myrcella to Stannis to Hodor to Old Nan. In terms of screen presence, he's as powerful as anyone in the history. I'm prepared to loose all my respect for him in the near future, because he stars in "Killing Season", some soon to come Hollywood drivel in which we Serbs - represented by fake-looking and fake-talking Travolta - are once again the bad guys, so once I watch that shit I probably won't repeat this ever again, but De Niro is probably the best actor I've ever seen. Stannis would suit him just fine, but, come to think of it, he'd also make an excellent Mance, which is maybe even trickier part, because of which I'd give it to someone with De Niro's skills.

And, good luck to you and your wife with the novel. If it's not a secret, what is it about?

In general I think the casting is pretty damned awesome so I wouldnt make too many changes but here are the ones I would make.

Robert Baratheon - I'd chose English actor Nick Grimble (Little John from Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves)

John Arryn - English actor P.H. Moriarty

The Queen of Thorns - Judi Dench, no explanation necessary.

Cersei - a young Vanessa Redgrave

Oops! Missed your post here; didn't mean to not respond. If you haven't seen De Niro's suporting performance in Silver Linings Playbook, it's well worth it. Very naturalistic, "lived-in" and emotionally commited.

My wife's book is a love story that gradually reveals itself as a monster story. Black comic, and obsessed with food and religious guilt. I'll let you know the title when it's closer to being published- I'm paranoid about someone on the internets taking it.

GoT may have the best cast on television, but if you had your choice of film actors from any time in history, who would you choose? You may think the current cast member is better than anyone else in history, but please stick to re-casting ideas for this thread. (Though I am having a hard time thinking of an alternate for Peter Dinklage in any era, to be honest)

A few suggestions of my own:

Robert Baratheon - Oliver Reed

Cersei - Marlene Dietrich

Petyr Baelish - Peter Sellers

Eddard Stark - Clint Eastwood

Varys - Peter Lorre

Bronn - Harry Dean Stanton

Danaerys Targaryen - Brigitte Bardot

You get the picture...

Peter Lorre was right on spot!
