Why didn't Tywin remarry?

Even if he did love his wife, his insatiable need for House Lannister power is greater. Marriage is a great way to seal alliances and amass more power and influence. With Jamie in the Kingsguard and the prospect of Tyrion on Casterly Rock, he must have at least thought about having more sons. I'm sure someone of his stature would get many proposals as well...

The only thing I can think of is that he was impotent after the twins were born, lending credence to the Tyrion Targaryen theory, and he did not want that exposed by being unable to produce more heirs with a new young wife.

To go way out there....perhaps he was always impotent and made a deal with Aerys to father his children to keep his House going. Then Jamie is Kingslayer and kinslayer...ouch!

Thoughts?

Because Tywin, at the end, doesn't care about House Lannister. He cares about himself and the power he has.

So, he loved Joanna, and felt like he wouldn't be in love with anyone else. Despite all the power he could have gained if he had married, I don't know, some women from House Hightower or whatever...he didn't want to.

Remember the Dance of the Dragons? Remarrying doesn't always work out for a ruler. Tywin was banking on being able to get Jaime out of the Kingsguard, and even if he didn't, Tyrion was -still- a better bet than trying to disinherit him in favor of producing newer children whom he wouldn't know how they would turn out, and would bring on the potential for civil war over his title after he passed, especially if, as you suggest, it was a powerful alliance.

Send Tyrion to the Citadel or the Faith. He even wanted to.

He's an hypocrite and a Targaryen wannabe. Only married an equal. Once Joanna died, no one was good enough for him.

BINGO!!! ITA and so does Cersei, hence the reason that Jaime was the only good enough for her once she lost her imagined Rhaegar. Tywin is also the greatest example, perhaps, of 'do as I say, not as I do." Then again, his almost incestual children were legit, unlike Cersei's, LOL

Just because he married his cousin doesn't make him a Targaryen wannabe. It doesn't seem uncommon for great houses, at least the older ones, to marry cousins.
