Hey gang... I was just wondering if there were any good graphic novels that y'all could recommend?

I am currently reading Preacher, and DMZ ... but they are both Vertigo, which is owned by DC... I'm looking for something with less corporate attachment.

I prefer trades... however this message board has a knack of steering me in the right direction.

...in advance, thanks.

Most of my favorite comics are from Image right now. Which is creator owned if that's what you're looking for. Here's some of what I'm currently reading. All of which should be available in trades.

Saga

East of West

Lazarus

Deadly Class

Thief of Thieves

Sex Criminals

Don't know much about comics but I always recommend Scalped. It is the best thing I've read comics wise. Brilliant all the way through, and I think theyre making a tv show out of it on cinemax soon if I'm not mistaken.

It's about an undercover indian fbi agent who goes back to his old res to bring down a criminal syndicate, and mainly their leader. Layered characters and a great story. It's also from Vertigo so it's very gritty and violent.

If you liked Preacher you're likely to enjoy some of Ennis's other work. His Hellblazer stuff (also a Vertigo imprint) was very good. Also like The Boys by him. A really twisted look at superheros. Really enjoy the primary artist (Darick Robertson) on that series as well.

The art has been absolutely gorgeous! Too bad it's taking so long between each issue, but it's worth the wait.

I agree on both accounts. It reminded me how good the original was.

I think it is interesting how time and space is getting played with. We have Daniel-Dream as part of the prequel story.

You'll have an easier time buying the trades paperback volumes of American Vampire and Y unless you go the ebay route for the actual single issues.

American Vampire Volume 1 (200 pages, collects American Vampire #1-5)

American Vampire Volume 2 (160 pages, collects American Vampire #6-11)

American Vampire Volume 3 (288 pages, collects American Vampire #12-18 and American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #1-5)

American Vampire Volume 4 (208 pages, collects American Vampire #19-27)

American Vampire Volume 5 (272 pages, collects American Vampire #28-34 and American Vampire: Lord of Nightmares #1-5)

American Vampire Volume 6 (144 pages, collects American Vampire Anthology #1 and American Vampire: Long Road To Hell #1)

American Vampire Volume 7 (144 pages, collects American Vampire Second Cycle #1-6)

Y: The Last Man has 10 Volumes, but has recently been re-released in a new Deluxe format that collects more issues in each book. You'll probably spend less money going the deluxe route.

Y: The Last Man Deluxe Book One (collects Y: The Last Man #1-10)

Y: The Last Man Deluxe Book Two (collects Y: The Last Man #11-23)

Y: The Last Man Deluxe Book Three (collects Y: The Last Man #24-36)

Y: The Last Man Deluxe Book Four (collects Y: The Last Man #37-48)

Y: The Last Man Deluxe Book Five (collects Y: The Last Man #49-60)

If you haven't read Joe Hill's Locke and Key, it is fabulous. It's dark fantasy/ horror with characters and atmosphere strong enough to overcome a pretty predictable plot.

Dark Horse has some good title too. B.P.R.D.: Hell on Earth reminds me a lot of Locke and Key, but the stories are a bit stronger IMO.

Also, if you are familiar with Stephen King's Dark Tower series there is a related comic series (by Marvel, so it's not really indie) with a few great story arcs. Some are just adaptations of parts of the books, and those are just ok. Others are original stories set in Roland's youth and they feature some unbelievable artwork. The Long Road Home is one of my favorite graphic novels of all time. There are pages I want to enlarge and frame.

Picked up all the current issues of the Fire and Stone series by Dark Horse. The series is set in the "AvP universe" and has 4 connected titles:

Fire and Stone: Aliens

Fire and Stone: Prometheus

Fire and Stone: Predator

Fire and Stone: AvP

Haven't read it yet but as a big fan of the universe, I'm looking forward to it.

Queen & Country - first volume is a bit stereotypical, the others are better.

Strangers in Paradise / Rachel Rising

Velvet - genderbended 007/bourne

DMZ

The Fuse - sci-fi background, cop book

Fatale - silly woman fatale horror

Parker - general 50's sociopathic asshole criminal in 1rst person - based on Donald E. Westlake books

Scalped - undercover cop in indian mafia

Of these really only Queen&Country, Strangers in Paradise and Rachel Rising qualify as indie (how can image or vertigo qualify as indie? A: they can't) ... and it kind of shows in the art. But they're very good anyway.

I have always wanted to read Halcyon, the review sounded interesting. Has anyone done so?

I would like to read messed up comics like My Friend Damner and Hansi, the Girl who Loved the Swastika. Just for the messed up value of it.

Can't comment about any of the other titles, but I do think Scalped qualifies as Indie despite Vertigo being a DC imprint. To me, Indie also refers to content, not just the size of the publisher producing the work. It's like an R or X rated film versus PG-13. You're simply not going to find the sort of content, themes, and art in mainstream comics that you're going to see in something like Scalped.
